Thorny Exchange

Whoops! There was a small problem with yesterday’s patch. I’ve quickly fixed it, and called the new, correct version v1.2.

Download VVVVVV v1.2 patch for windows

If you’ve already upgraded to v1.1, then you’ll need downgrade to v1.0 first, using this.

How to tell which version you’re running: The original version 1.0 has a simple main menu, version 1.1 has a more complex one with separate game and graphic options, and the new version 1.2 has a little v1.2 mark in the bottom right hand corner of the main menu.

  1. Bought the game last night, utterly floored by it. Downgrade Patch 1.2 installed fine. Out of curiosity, what was wrong with the first patch?

  2. I accidentally broke the time trials when I implemented the quick restart button 🙁 Unfortunately, I didn’t realise until I’d already put the patch together…

  3. OK… this is going to sound really stupid, but…

    I’m running VVVVVV via Wine, and even though I knew what previously caused it to crash was the fact that it started up in fullscreen mode, I went and tried setting it to fullscreen just to see what would happen.

    Naturally it crashed the game. What I didn’t expect was that subsequent attempts to open the game opened in fullscreen mode, meaning I can’t set it back and can’t play it. And uninstalling and reinstalling didn’t help, either, presumably because it’s saved in the Flash cache and they don’t affect that.

    Do you guys know how I can access and edit the Flash cache, then? Other than clearing the whole thing, which I don’t want to do? Or else would it be possible for our gracious host to write a quick “clear saves” program (or, you know, just “clear options” program) for VVVVVV, for other people who see the big “DO NOT PRESS” button and feel compelled to try it? :-/

  4. Actually, I think I’ve found the Flash cache; can you just say what website it’s listed under, so I know where to look? A search for “vvvvvv” turned up only a file related to the demo, and removing it didn’t affect anything. (So maybe I haven’t found the right Flash cache after all? :-/ )

  5. Ah! I found it! Sorry to bug you, then. Still this might be a good idea in case future people are as foolish as me…

  6. Yes, it works under wine/Linux now. Just placed my order then. Still, I wish fullscreen worked 🙂 Maybe in the future ! Thanks !

  7. Er, silly me – rather than requesting that someone else tell people how to do what I just figured out, I should just say it myself. Anyone who has fallen into this same trap as me, you need to look not in the ordinary Flash cache, but in the separate Wine Flash cache, which can be found in your Wine C drive (well, assuming that’s where you installed VVVVVV) under windows/profiles/[username]/Application Data/Macromedia/Flash Player. Then you want to look under #SharedObjects; then in the folder inside that (in one of the folders inside that?) you should find a folder “localhost” and inside that Program Files/VVVVVV/VVVVVV.exe (well, assuming that’s where you installed VVVVVV), and inside that should be the file dwvvvvvv_unlock.sol; that’s your savegame data. So if you accidentally set it to fullscreen mode and lock yourself out of the game, and you don’t mind losing your savegame data, you can delete that file to get it working again. Otherwise, well, hopefully you can figure out how to appropriately edit it to toggle the fullscreen setting… it contains the word “fullscreen”, so presumably that should be stored in one of the bytes nearby there…

  8. Running this in wine, at the end of the first level I get

    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
    at musicclass/play()
    at gameclass/updatestate()
    at Main/gamelogic()
    at Main/mainloop()

    I can dismiss this, but then it comes again and again, forcing me to quit the game.

  9. Okay, this seems to happen at the end of every level. At the end of the second level, it had errors and the music stopped, but I could still teleport through back to the ship. When I tried to teleport back again, the graphics died and the only thing left was the sound when I flipped gravity.
