Title: The Open Level (Nearing completion!)
Post by: ToasterApocalypse on February 16, 2013, 09:02:59 AM
As tOLP is finally nearing completion, (2/3 areas left to make) we are no longer accepting participants. Looking back on the whole level, I say it's been a huge success. We'll be working on bringing this to people soon!
Meanwhile, go to http://tolp.webs.com/apps/forums/ to apply for a spot at testing the level for bugs once the level design is complete. Once all the bugs are fixed, we'll release this level as Dimension Open.

Thanks.  :viridian:

So, who does what?
I was thinking anyone for the story, You and maybe FIQ on scripting and me perhaps on level design because I have an idea for a stealth-mission type level.

Problems, though.
I'm very slowly working on Rainbow Factory and Mission Polar.
You're working on your 4th level (5th counting PuZZZZZZles)
FIQ is working on Back to VVVVVV 1.2
Other than that, we're in the clear for this

We should also make a plan for the level/story, or everything will take on a life of it's own. :P

Yeah.
How about Viridian and Vitellary go out to do some field research, and when they get back, Victoria is missing?

What should we call it?
Err... Dimension Open? I have no idea.

By the way, I decided to mess around and this is a possible first room.

Wait, we should make a changelog in a script, just act like that script is a text document, call it --CHANGELOG-- or anything, and type in it. I do the same in my own level for flags and a to do list. Everyone just makes a paragraph with a list of what they changed, and with their name and a version number, for example:

Yeah. I'll put the download for the level in the first post/PM it to everyone involved.

Hm, sounds interesting. I don't know how available I'll be, or what I could possibly do that someone else here couldn't do better. But if you need anybody else, I can try it. Maybe Ill pick up on some concepts that I don't quite get already. Internal scripting, Direct Mode, etc. etc. etc. Yeah, I know I'm bad at this. I'm bad with every level editor I've ever tried to use. But this game really makes me want to make levels for some reason. I dunno. Like I said, I don't know how much time I'll have for this with college and all that in the way. If it helps matters, my main problem is that I can tend to be too detail-oriented and lose sight of the overall picture. So maybe I won't be involved much with the overall level design, but I can help with plot/dialogue/other aesthetic matters. And I might be able to pick up on some of the ways to improve my abilities with the actual important parts. Yeah, I'm kinda putting myself down a bit much. It's something I tend to do when I don't really have a plan.  :-\

Keep in mind that 2.0 cannot use Direct Mode and will screw up rooms designed with it. Either force people that edit to have 2.1, or do not use direct mode.

Where will the level be hosted btw?

I mentioned that before... (EDIT: In a PM, so you couldn't have known)

Where will the level be hosted btw?

Dropbox! :vermillion: Just because a lot of people don't know how to use it!

(No, when it's finished, it's likely to be hosted on the forum or on Mediafire)

And anyone who wants to participate can send ToasterApocalypse, Doormat or me (or all 3) a PM, then we know that you want to participate and you'll also get the level as it progresses, to edit it :viridian:

Well, I have 2.1, but A) I can't speak for everyone else, and B) like I said, I don't know how to use Direct Mode. I've searched the forums for any sort of tutorial or whatever, but I can't find one. All I know is that F10 turns it on, but beyond that nothing makes sense to me. But as I also said, if I do work on this level, it wouldn't be involving much DM usage on my part.

And honestly I should be working on my own level that I've been planning. But when I came back to college after the break, guess where I left my plans for the level? ::) I didn't have MUCH written down and not applied, but it's enough to make me want them back at some point. But I suppose not having those details (which shouldn't be too hard to remember anyway) could force me to actually consider the level design somewhat. I'll work on that a bit later this evening actually. Maybe I'll make some progress. But who knows? :viridian:

HOW TO USE DIRECT MODE:
Push F10 to turn on Direct Mode. Hold down Ctrl and a thing will appear. Use the arrow keys to select a tile. Let go of Ctrl and use 1 - Walls to place that tile. The end

No worries, no problem if you can't use direct mode, as long as you have 2.1, you'll not screw up the Direct Mode edited parts.

My point was, where is it going to be hosted so people can edit it properly.

Oh. Dang. I feel stupid now. Never thought to use Ctrl for anything. Therefore, never saw the whole input menu. Oops. :-[
And I'm sorry if I'm confusing anyone with my posts. I don't think I'll be doing much with this level. Except maybe playtesting it. I'm probably going to spend most if not all of my level-editor time on my own level. Especially now that I've figured out how to hold down a single button. Seriously, this will make things so much easier. Or distract me with so much more to choose from. ::) I'll figure that out soon enough.

We'll probably look for playtesters as development continues. But right now, there's barely any content to test.

The level is looking nice so far, one level completed as of 16/2/13 (2/16/13 for MM/DD/YY)

How will the process of selecting who works on what work?

My only request...
Do not use direct mode.

How will the process of selecting who works on what work?

For everyone's information, everything is going on in PMs and in the drawing room, not in this thread, so whoever wants to join can just send one of us a PM, or go to the drawing room to tell Toaster, Doormat, FIQ and/or me, as long as one of us is online there. :)

Is direct mode ok if you use the normal tiles instead of the special tiles? (Like corner tiles to fix a wall that looks messed?) Would it change?

I think every direct mode thing is going to get messed up in 2.0. We agreed to only use direct mode for the last bit.

Oh, and maybe direct mode can be used, but it should be clearly stated as roomtext in all adjacent rooms that 2.0 users should not go to the room above/below/to the left/right. Because 2.0 only messes up rooms you actually visit with the editor.

Don't you have to interact with the room (not just go through it) to break it?
Title: Re: We should get a bunch of people and make a level together.
Post by: Dav999 on February 17, 2013, 02:12:39 PM
Don't you have to interact with the room (not just go through it) to break it?

I think 2.0 breaks rooms if you visit them, but say (1,1) is a non-direct mode room and (2,1) is a direct mode room, the starting point is in (1,1) and you open the level in the level editor in 2.0. Then you start playtesting in room (1,1), and walk to (2,1). Nothing gets messed up if you do it like that, but if you'd press right in editing mode to go to (2,1), VVVVVV 2.0 immediately messes up all direct mode editing in that room.

In any case, (1,1) shouldn't be edited with direct mode at all if it's going to be done in the meantime, because that's the absolute starting point for the editor.

Interesting concept. Unfortunately I'm going to school very soon and don't really have enough time for developing a level :(
Please don't make the level too hard - I will hate you for this T_T
Maybe you can have a sequence of rooms that works like this:
1. Play normally in a light blue room.
2. Play as :vitellary: in a yellow room.
3. Play as :vermillion: in a red room.
.....
Should be pretty cool :D

Oh god you actually set up a site for a level. I just registered to see what's going on and I become a limited member  :viridian:
Since it reminds me of limited edition, it makes me  :viridian:
That most recent version - so you have at least 63 rooms now  :vitellary:
I guess I will look forward to this, although very likely not able to beat it :P

Also, you're a limited member because if Dav made you a full member you could see spoilery things and could download our revisions! :victoria:

How many rooms does the level have now? Do you expect the level to reach 400 rooms?

Also, in the site, after "Working on the next version (x):", is there supposed to be the username of the person that's making it? Most of the times (including now), it's "???", but, one time, it was "crazyal02" (I think that the current version was 102 or something).

We haven't reached 400 rooms yet (but it is 20x20) and I think that we have to puzzle a lot with warp tokens and such to be able to get 400 rooms. It would be a nice achievement, though. :)

Yes, and ??? means that it's either not being made yet, or I haven't updated it yet between the moment that someone says they're making the next version and the moment it's 'released'.

You can just make a room with the warpzone tileset and later someone else will make it gray. In order to make it gray you have to manually edit the .vvvvvv file in a text editor.

I can still finish my scripts if someone tells me exactly how it should be, but I'll not participate otherwise.
