Title: VVOVOV - I made / am making a Fangame
Post by: Trdjn on May 15, 2017, 10:42:45 AM
Backstory of this Project:
About two years ago I started trying to make some games in Java.
So after a view scrapped projects, I wanted to see if I can make something like the Gravitron from VVVVVV, this Idea quickly developed into the Idea for a complete VVVVVV Fangame.
So I did the only two logical things, adding a Portal Gun, and making a rotating Version of the Gravitron without Checkpoints.
I started with this project on the 15th of June 2015, since then with some phases of me not working on this or working on something else, I've continued working on this Project.
Around January of this year I set myself the goal to finish this within two years and therefor by the 15th of June 2017.
As of now I will probably not finish it until then, but still plan on releasing this Fangame this year.
So to give myself a reason to finish VVOVOV, I decided to post about this project in this forum.

TL;DR:
I made a VVVVVV Fangame with a Portal Gun.

- = Edit(30th of October 2017) = -
There is now an early Version you can download Here! (http://heptaveegesimal.com/vvovov.html)

- = Rest of the old post = -
Current Progress (15th of May 2017):
The Map is 85% Complete.
(2.5 + 0) out of (4 + 2) Minigames.
I also have not yet made a lot of terminals that will provide a backstory within the game.

Thanks!
This mechanic seemed to be the most logical way to handle, the player going through a portal.

this is amazing.
one nitpick though: you're using the "wide legs" sprite when you should be using the "closed legs" sprite. when the character is standing still, their legs should be closed, and they should be open while they're in midair.

These pictures look very promising, also that portal mechanic is something that I'm REALLY looking forward to. It must've taken a lot of love and determination to make a game to this point, keep at it and welcome to the forums!

My bet is the player is orange because Chell wears an orange thingyidfk in Portal.

or not idk

First off, Thanks for all the positive comments. :)

or not idk
More because of orange and blue being very typical colors for Portal.
Also this color is relatively different from those in VVVVVV

I tried working on a VVVVVV fangame a couple years ago but wasn't determined enough to finish it.
I also had this problem with a few games I tried making before this. With VVOVOV I made good progress when I was starting with the game, at some point I switched over to making the Menu, may or may not have spent way too much time on the customizable Keybindings, until I eventually got the point where I spent too much time on it to just scrap the project, I definitly also had some phases where I wasn't motivated enough to work on this.
Title: Re: VVOVOV - Progress Update: 01.07.2017
Post by: Trdjn on July 01, 2017, 02:11:00 PM
So here is a quick progress update on this project:

I'm pretty much done with the map, and am now working on the remaining minigames.
As of now I think that I should be able to complete the game in about a month.
I'll probably take about another month, for stuff like playtesting (to make sure there aren't any major embarrassing errors when I release it), setting up a website (Yes, I want my own website and not just use the first potential site, that allows me to upload files) and maybe adding some minor features.
Also because of certain real life stuff, I don't want to give any exact date:
But I think a Release at some point during September should be relatively realistic estimation.

PS: Sorry, for this being a double post.

Do you already have music lined up? (he asked, opportunistically)
Sorry, but this is actually the one major problem I'm having with this game.
I know a game like this should really have music or at least some sound :'(, but
As of now this game does not have any sounds, which comes down to two problems:

1. Me not having worked with stuff like this in java. I actually did made a game that had music a while back, but that was using external libraries, which I really didn't want. Now javafx seems to have a way to play sounds, but when I tried working with it that was rather annoying, because of a lot of obscure errors. I probably would be able to figure out how it works, giving it a bit more time, but then there is the second point.

2. I have the musical talent of a potato.
Even though it's a bit of a I never even seriously tried thing.
I did try to see if I could make something using LMMS, but everything I did was just arranging piano nodes in different patterns, and ending up with something that might not make your ears bleed, but nothing beyond that point. I don't know how to even do something in the style of VVVVVV, not even speaking of making something sound good.
Also playing instruments (when I had to in School), was in the end just muscle memory for me.

I would like to actually make some music for the game, if I were able, but ↑.
So as it looks right now, if you are going to play the game, you will probably need to find yourself some music to turn on in the background.

Sorry for shattering any hope and drifting off pretty far.

If you get number 1 fixed, we have some pretty talented musicians around, in fact, the person you're talking to is one, and, if you ask them, get some music for you.

Oh Wow, Thanks for the offers.

Let's get to the short answer first:
Designing a website is something I want to do myself.

Now to the longer answer:
With the music, I feel like I should finish the game itself first, before annoying people because of music.
I just don't want to create a situation where I have someone make music for me, when I don't know if they will actually like the final product in which it will be used.
I guess I'll work on number 1, to get the game to a point where it would support music. So that I could update it to have music afterwards.

But I would like to come back to this at some point. If that's ok.

Will you add a level editor to the fangame?
I actually plan on adding an Editor, but it's not a primary goal as of the first release.

If I add one it will probably happen in two stages:
First making an option, that reads all necessary information from text and png-files and converts it into level that can be played.
Which is similar to how I'm handling scripting as of now.
And should be doable in relatively realistic amount of time.
And if that works, I'll try making a proper level editor.

When this comes out and gets a few updates, we will PROBABLY need a subboard for VVOVOV.
Levels, discussion, bug reports... Maybe a whole forum! lets hope it has a forum games board

LET ME MAKE IT

You should actually try an xml file or a json file for levels, like VVVVVV.
Something like VVVVVV's.
Example:
Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<MapData version="2">

        </MetaData>
        <mapwidth>20</mapwidth>
        <mapheight>20</mapheight>
        <levmusic>0</levmusic>
<!-- rooms tile by tile -->
        <contents>1: "132, 153, 623, 726, 152, 125", 2: etc...</contents>
        <edEntities>
            <edentity x="734" y="225" t="10" p1="1" p2="0" p3="0" p4="0" p5="320" p6="240">

            <edentity x="160" y="189" t="19" p1="44" p2="21" p3="0" p4="0" p5="320" p6="240">

Something like VVVVVV's.
I'll probably do something more on the json end of the spectrum (that seems a bit more logical).
I guess I could try to go consistently with an already existing format, to make it easier for people to use.

I also figured out how to do stuff with javafx, even though half of it was having to bother with the garbage collector.
Oh, and I changed the old crappy font.

I like json better

Progress Update:
The map and all minigames are done.
The game has an easy, normal and hard difficulty.
I now have a website http://heptaveegesimal.com/ where I will publish the game.
The game now has an ingame news system.

Give me around 2 to 3 more weeks for all sorts off stuff (Bugfixes, Testplaying, etc.).

Love this! Good luck Trdjn. :viridian:
Thanks.
Could I playtest?
if he gets in this, could i also get in this?

So this is the current situation:
There is only some text missing which is not directly relevant for the game because it is meant to provide some backstory. Now I neither want to fill this with a bunch of forced shitty text nor do I want to delay this for a few months just to slowly fill this in. So there will be some terminals that will tell the player that they don't contain any content.

Now speaking of test playing:
So far I have only given the game to some people I actually know in person, so I can get rid of major bugs before releasing this game. If asking here I might as well upload a 0.3 Version which would be appropriate anyways since this simply isn't a 1.0 Version. Then I could split test players in to 0.2 test players and 0.3 test players. In that case anyone who wants could play the early potentially buggy version and also send me their save file for the sake of statistics, plus all relevant rooms are named so addressing bugs in certain rooms shouldn't be too hard. Does this still count as test playing or would this just be people downloading and playing the game. Anyways I don't want to wait much longer for the current test players since only two out of six of them actually played at least the start of the game, while the rest has not (after two weeks). The only major bug I fixed since then was one that I found on my own, if anyone cares it was basically randomly causing the game running at only 66% of the normal speed, caused by the Java VM not liking the Thread.sleep() method and I had this happen only two times during development, so it was hard for me to find out what caused it.

And on a completely unrelated note:
5tr4 your avatar reminds me of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdCJunw_Jgg) video.

This is still an early version and has some missing content.
There probably still be some bugs, so please let me know when you find bugs.
You can now download this fangame Here. (http://heptaveegesimal.com/vvovov.html)
But if you want a game with no missing content an as few bugs as possible you might want to wait for a later version.

Also the function to select different skins, which was mostly just a for fun feature, turns out to be rather pointless since there are no custom levels.

So this was a joke I added quite a while ago, decided to keep it and most people got this relatively quickly.
So Spoiler [Highlight the text below]:
Press "Any Key" meant to use your mouse and press the highlighted "Any Key" on the screen.

Also since there is no predefined Path for Windows Vista, you might want to open the jar file, go to basics/main/Path.txt and edit that file, the syntax of it should be relatively obvious you just should not add something below the default case, also ~/ is the home directory.

Er, thanks! I really should've caught on to that.
EDIT: There's a bug where if you collect a piece of cake by running into it, the running animation still plays for as long as you don't dismiss the text. It's a bug, but it's really funny because it looks like you're doing a victory dance.
EDIT 2: Secret Information was almost impossible!

cool so far. however i'd say that the "achievement unlocked" box is kind of intrusive, because at the end of the tutorial it gets in the way of a terminal textbox. and speaking of the end of the tutorial, you don't get the "got all three cakes" achievement until you talk to the last terminal there.

it would make more sense if the emancipation grill only erased your own portals instead of the ones that already exist when you walk in.

also, if you're aiming to replicate vvvvvv's physics, the player character should instantly reach maximum velocity when they flip or fall off a platform. it seems to me that they start out with less momentum than two seconds later.

Yeah, I noticed this a few times but forgot to move the text down. I'll fix it for the next Version.
and speaking of the end of the tutorial, you don't get the "got all three cakes" achievement until you talk to the last terminal there.
Based on how you interpret this, I thought of it as "complete the tutorial AND get all cakes", so I only checked on the end, then again if someone gets the third cake they pretty much completed the tutorial, and if they missed one of the other 2 cakes they would have completed the tutorial already because of the third cake.
Whatever I'll change it if that makes more sense.
it would make more sense if the emancipation grill only erased your own portals instead of the ones that already exist when you walk in.
Makes sense, however this would make gating much more complicated.
also, if you're aiming to replicate vvvvvv's physics, the player character should instantly reach maximum velocity when they flip or fall off a platform. it seems to me that they start out with less momentum than two seconds later.
This wasn't really what I was aiming for, the controls in VVVVVV seem a bit more sensitive as well, which I believe makes sense to some extent, because when there is more stuff I can do if it is not as hard as it would be in VVVVVV, or it's just because I'm less used to the controls of VVVVVV.

Oh, and thanks to everyone who is playing the game.
Another thing I might as well mention, this is the list of bugs in the game that I currently am aware of:
http://heptaveegesimal.com/vvovov-buglist.html (http://heptaveegesimal.com/vvovov-buglist.html)
And if anyone is having problems with some of the 0.3.0 bugs I did upload version 0.3.1 where I fixed some bugs.

This looks really cool! I tried working on a VVVVVV fangame a couple years ago but wasn't determined enough to finish it.

old injoke. I tried making a fangame called "EEEEEE" a few years ago, then later someone posted a level of the same name and claimed I stole the name from them. they were really insistent about it

Oh ok. I believe that you didn't steal the name from them :)

amazing game!
Thanks!

Also thanks to uugr,
who has recently played almost the entire game and has also provided some helpful feedback on some of the later sections. Turns out that some of the bosses in the game are way harde than I intended them to be, when I made them. And while I did beat all bosses when I made them, now that I have played them a bit again, I do see how the normal mode versions of them are definitely not appropriate for normal mode. I'll try to fix these problems once I have time for it, so it's not going to happen within the next two weeks. So if anyone intends to play this until then, maybe use the easy difficulty instead and DO NOT play on hard mode, on normal and easy you get distinct patterns, while on hard mode attacks are random.

How do I download this fangame? or is it not done?
You can get the game here: http://heptaveegesimal.com/vvovov.html

Also a quick update, since my last post here: I have since then added a level editor.

I did start making an editor guide, but didn't get around to finishing the section on the scripting language for this game. However here is the incomplete thing, if anyone wants to try it: http://heptaveegesimal.com/vvovov/editor.html
