Title: Palace of Peril by Blublu
Post by: Blublu on August 06, 2011, 04:57:22 am
Hello. Here's a new level I've been working on for the past week or so. It is pretty large or 9x10 screens, and I think it came out pretty good.

It could use a little bit more polish to prettify it a little more, but I'm actually kind of sick of this level and don't want to work on it for at least a few days. So I'm releasing it now.

It should all work but if you see any bugs, let me know! :P Otherwise, enjoy.

This level seems to have some neat mechanics.  I'm stuck though, in a yellow area with gravlines labeled "3" and "7.  I touched a checkpoint and there's no way back, but I can't get out of this area.  I presumed I had to hit the lines in order of number, but I never touched "2" before and now spikes prevent me from escaping. :victoria:

The number just denotes how many times you can touch it before it disappears. So you have to touch the "7" line 7 times, then it will disappear and take the bigger line next to it away as well, unlocking the next area. This is also the key to collecting the trinket in that area. :)

Maybe it could be a bit more intuitive. I think in the next version I'll add dialogue boxes to explicitly explain this.

The counters are all reset if you touch a checkpoint or die, so you have to do it 7 times without dying, too.

It looks nice, but on that first screenshot, I don't quite see how you're supposed to get on the bottom. Does one of those platforms move down so you can flip onto it?

Yes, some of those platforms are moving platforms. It should become more clear when actually playing. And actually, Viridian is standing at the end of the room, you come in from the other side.

Oh.  :D That's hilarious. And I don't know why.

I beat the yellow sector and green sector and fully explored the eastern area (except the far "6 trinket" part), but I still don't have the red key.  How do I access the red area?

Well, there are two crewmen in the "green sector" which is terribly named by the way since it's not all green. When you reach the bottom, there's one sub-section to each side, each containing a crewman. Did you find both of them? If you did, then it's a bug with the scripts. You're supposed to receive the laboratory key once you have found both of them.  Ugh...

Ah, sorry, I totally forgot about the right side of the green sector.  I tried the spike/gravline puzzle and it was so hard I figured it was a trinket challenge, not a regular area.  I'll have to go back there!

That gravity line mechanic is absolutely ingenious. Kudos :viridian:

This is very well designed. Unfortunately, I have a short temper and the got fed up with trying to get rid of the lines and continuous dying. :violet:

It's pretty good, I just think that you should add a few more room names, and in the Victoria script, one of the text boxes is a line short. Just thought I'd let you know.

I wish it was easier, though. There's some incredibly inventive stuff here (just finished the green/left area too), but this is WAY too hard for most people. :victoria:

I haven't gotten through the Cyan gravity line section yet, but I'll come back to it.

Very inventive but Terry is right.

I never got past the yellow area due to difficulty. The thing that makes VVVVVV more awesome (to me, remember its my opinion) is how death is such a small penalty. While your gravity lines that need to be hit x times are great, it makes dying sting a little too hard for my taste. Many of the falls are too long to reach them. It would have been nice to see some small puzzles instead of long reflex challenges. I did not make it to the green area so you may have done just that. If so, I apologize.

That being said. It felt creative and definitely stood out from other maps. I hope to see another one from you, or at least a little more polish on this.

That was tough, but I completed it with all of the trinkets!  ;D

I can't get the gravity line in the room 2 rooms after "unlock" in the yellow section to reset to 2 touches, and as a result, I'm unable to get the trinket which requires you to avoid the checkpoints. Look into that  :victoria:

That was a great challenge. I found it very enjoyable; I completed with all 7 trinkets on my blind run of the stage. Very inventive stuff, I look forward to seeing your future stages if you choose to continue designing them.

My only main annoyance was that I needed to keep reusing the terminal when respawning while trying to get the final trinket. I have left, right, v etched into memory, I'm not accustomed to reaching over to press return frequently while I'm playing VVVVVV unless it's a cutscene or I'm purposely trying to read what a terminal has to say.

Oh, and almost all of the rooms were unnamed, disappointing. There could have been a number of creative ones to go with the rooms but that's your own prerogative to address, not mine.

Awesome level!  Thanks.

One of, if not my favorite player level so far.  Nice work.

Really enjoying this level, though I'm having trouble getting the first trinket in the yellow zone. The one which has the gravity lines that need to be hit three times. I can make them disappear, but by the time I get around to the other side, the lines are reset!  :victoria:

Besides that snag I think I've seen almost everything... Interestingly enough, while I found the numbered gravity lines very inventive, I enjoyed much more your work with vanilla gravity lines, dissolving platforms and terminals. There were some really neat puzzles!

Thanks for commenting everyone. Yeah, I have been thinking about this level, and I'm going to go over it again, give names to many of the rooms and also, I'm going to make it a bit easier to complete. Or maybe a lot easier.

Other than that, it is a little bit unpolished now because frankly, I got completely sick of it, and when it was "finished" I just didn't want to work on it for a while. You might also notice that the final area (the lab) is pretty rushed, especially the part leading up to the trinket area.

Anyway I appreciate your comments and I will release a new improved version ........ whenever I feel like it :) but hopefully soon.

Remember, every time you touch a checkpoint, all gravity lines are reset. So you actually have to avoid all check points between unlocking and getting the trinket. :P And if you die, that also counts as touching a check point, since ... err, you touch one the moment you respawn. Edit: or at least, the checkpoints on the screen right after "unlock". Brreeehhhhdhhh

I will probably make that particular trinket a little easier to get in the next version. As well as making absolutely clear the mechanics of the numbered gravity lines, probably by an informative terminal.

I will look into that and see if I can make it more streamlined. See, this is the kind of insight you just can't get by playing by yourself. :P Thanks!

White text to prevent spoilers:

My problem is that 2 screens above the screen called 'unlock', if I've opened the gravity lines on the trinket room, there will be no gravity lines in this room, and therefore I can't get through here to the trinket room, and must throw myself onto the spikes in the upper left cavity.

I'm seriously stumped here. Is it a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

If I remember the room correctly, just move to the right and it'll work itself out

Just in case someone else still gets stumped on it:

It is possible to get stuck on the trinket in the yellow zone. The problem is that the only checkpoints which reset the 2-gravline just before the trinket are the three in the room below the 2-gravline. From those, it is impossible to reach the 3-gravline that unlocks the trinket without hitting the 2-gravline. The way back is blocked by the 7-gravline; the way forward requires hitting the 2-gravline at least once. If the 2-gravline isn't fully reset, you can't get through its room without hitting any checkpoints.

Thus, it's only possible to get the trinket on the first time you pass throught the 7-gravline. If you die or hit a checkpoint between that and getting the trinket, you can no longer get it. This applies even if you never unlocked the 3-gravline covering the trinket. So what you have to do is flawlessly get the trinket the first time you play the yellow zone. If you make any mistake, you have to reset.
