I tried to modify my original post, but it wasn't having it  ::)

Changes in this edition:

* Added a warning if you attempt to leave the Green Zone without rescuing  :verdigris:

* Changed the flags so that the 'rescue flag' is set when you touch a crewmate, as opposed to merely talking to them.

* Some minor aesthetic fixes

* Some minor difficulty balancing issues

* Added Easy Mode - based off of Hard Mode, but with every room edited to be somewhat easier.

Two different zip files... Hope it works this time :)

This is the final version for now. I will update if:

* A major bug is found

* Terry adds stuff to the editor that could benefit this level

EDIT:

New version uploaded... Changes:

* Fixed a bug where you could get stuck inside  :verdigris:'s room if you died in mid-teleport
* Fixed the whole Sea of Chaos riddle fiasco, and added a visual cue to both modes.
* Removed mention of the deleted 'bouncing triangle' in Easy Mode
* Shaved a couple of spikes, most notably, in the Easy Mode version of You're On Your Own Now
* Added a terminal with a few shouts out to those who playtested/left feedback
* A couple of other tiny changes

Please let me know what you think, especially of the Easy Mode!

Sendy

EDIT: I'm going to have to attatch each version to a seperate post! It's too big...

Here's the EASY mode!

HARD MODE! FOR HARD PEOPLE! :p

I clocked about 90 minutes total on my trip through "HARD MODE! FOR HARD PEOPLE!" I managed to snag all 20 trinkets, had around 700 deaths overall. :vermillion:

Probably the most difficult and polished custom stage I've played to date, it really tickled my fancy. I can tell, just from playing through it, that a lot of effort got put into it. Even some of the room names got me to laugh out loud, and I'm normally a solemn and quiet gamer, even when frustrated. The two that got me best were "We're no strangers to love" for obvious reasons and "Yes, I have an unlimited supply of them" because of what it was a reply to (implicitly).

I'll keep my eyes peeled for bugs or flaws, if I find any I'll report them here.

this is not easy and hard, this is hard and very hard

This is the final version for now. I will update if:

* Terry adds stuff to the editor that could benefit this level

a world map would benefit this immensely

Well that was the hardest level I've played by far :vermillion:
Did hard mode of course, it was really really incredibly frustrating in parts but I got all 20 trinkets and all the crewmembers.
There's a small typo in the final room (time is spelled wrong), in case you ever get around to updating again, but I didn't notice any major bugs.
The secret area was fun, and all the dialog was quite enjoyable. It would be nice if some of the trinkets involved harder puzzles, since they're supposed to be extra collectables for adventurers but paled in comparison to the difficulty of the final area. It felt weird having the secret area before the hard part of the game.
Very nice level, I really liked the polish and the difficulty.

Did easymode, I've only beaten IWBTG once...

Nice thorought, besides 'You're on your own now' being ridiculously hard. The rest was reasonable.

About the 'riddle' terminal: The Chief is Verdigris, located in the Green sector. The lake of chaos is in the purple area, Violet's dungeon. You might want to fix that.

Is the version I downloaded in the original thread the easy version or the hard version?

Well, the reason for that is... that... it's.... um... Ok, I got nothing  :D  Thanks for pointing this out - it's not the first time I've confused green for purple in my own level *faceplant*.  Maybe I'm internally colourblind.

There's another blooper, in the Easy Mode of  :verdigris:'s room, a 'bouncing triangle' is referred to, which no longer exists in that version. Not game breaking stuff but it's annoying me.

Loliver - you have an early release of the Hard version... I worked on it a bit more since then... So it's best to download from this thread or the featured levels thread (had to throw that in  :P )

Dinoquark - About the trinket challenges, I somewhat agree. The problem I had with making the overall map is that I started with a 5x5 level, which I eventually expanded to 5x6 when I was making the Blue Zone. That's why in Style over Substance Squared you're just falling - it's a linker room. As the level grew I couldn't expand vertically without messing up the first two levels I'd made, and creating a gap in them, so I began to add horizontally. Little did I know, there's a limit of 20 in either the X or Y direction for maps. So, the net result is that I had to make the levels quite linear, and there isn't much room for the trinkets to have their own challenges and rooms - which is ideally what I wanted.

You can sort of see what happened when you look at the pixel-map that the VVVVVV level mapper program creates (don't do this unless you're OK with spoilers or have 100%ed it, though!)... On the left hand side, the tunnels are quite spacious and there's more free space and wall. As you look more and more to the right, there's more economy of space, smaller tunnels, and less unused wall-space, as I tried to shoehorn as much as I could into the limit I'd discovered!

If and when I do another level, it'll be a lot less linear and will feature multiple paths and more exploration!

Everyone else - thanks for your comments! :)

I couldn’t get into this one.  I'm not really sure why.  The large level size is a bit intimidating, but that's not really an issue.  Checkpoint placement frustrates me in places like “The Awkward Terminal” where I have to redo a ton of stuff when I die once.  Room design and humor was very nice though.

In any case, congrats on getting featured!  I still might come back to this level when I have a lot of free time.

Thanks for letting me know how you got on with it... 'negative' feedback is the only way I can improve! I figured I'd annoy a lot of people with some of the checkpoint placement, but I decided to stick with my original design breif. Even in the Easy Mode, there are spots where I felt a CP might be needed, but I couldn't place one without rendering a puzzle moot. I'm honestly relieved that so many people have reported finishing it at all  :D

Okay. I beat this.

This level was extremely frustrating. I shudder to think what Hard Mode is like. That is the sort of level where every time I clear a challenge, I say, "Well, I'm glad I don't have to do THAT ever again in my life."

Fortunately, your design was so good that it managed to keep me playing. It was close, though.

I got 19/20 trinkets. I missed the Lover's Leap one, because I said, "well, this is obviously the sea of chaos, but I guess I had to do something in the Green Area to unlock this."

After clearing the game, I decided to edit your level and add a few warp tokens so that I could easily return to Lover's Leap, get the trinket I missed, go to the heart room, and then warp back to the end of the game. I hope you don't mind. The alternative was replaying multiple areas, including the Final Area, and see above for my feelings on that.

The whole "Hello I'm from Earth and I created this" schtick seemed a bit self-indulgent to me.

EDIT: Janky Walk-in Trepanning Machine is the best name of any room, ever.

I love this level, even though it's really hard for me, and I've hardly done any of it.

Little did I know, there's a limit of 20 in either the X or Y direction for maps.

...isn't the main game map 20x20, plus those other areas?

Believe it or not, I was worried that I'd made Easy Mode TOO easy ;) . My biggest problem as a designer is not so much finding a difficulty curve, but normalizing that whole curve, so that the majority of players can play through to the end. Hard Mode is a perfect challenge to me, and Easy Mode is great for quick playthroughs. I've probably played my level more than any other level, but then I did design it primarily to please myself.

Thanks... I learned a fair bit making the Easy Mode version. There's an art to taking a puzzle or athletic challenge, and 'watering it down' so that everyone can beat it, without removing the essence of the puzzle/challenge. This is something I'll be thinking about an awful lot in my next level, which will likely be a lot bigger and a fair bit easier.

No, I don't mind. It was probably my mistake that confused you anyway.

The whole "Hello I'm from Earth and I created this" schtick seemed a bit self-indulgent to me.

That was the kind of humour I was going for... As soon as you allow multiple dimensions, you open a sort of pandora's box where anything is possible. So the plot I made, however self-indulgent, is kinda feasable in the game world, I think. If it makes you smirk or smile or scoff, it's job is done. Rather than create a masterpiece in fan-fiction, I just wanted to put in a little bit of text to reward players for being thorough, and to give them a good feeling beyond merely getting the good ending and bragging rights.

EDIT: Janky Walk-in Trepanning Machine is the best name of any room, ever.

Janky is just a brilliant word in it's-self... it just sounds perfect for what the word means :)

Yes, it seems the 20x20 limits of the main game are carried over into the editor. It might be nice to be able to exceed these, when making levels that are perhaps 1x50 (like a tower level), but it's adequate for most purposes.

At 1000 deaths I've got nineteen trinkets and four people.

Apparently I must go back through the purple section entirely to figure out how to achieve the "lover's leap."

Since the game doesn't have any "tricks" it appears I will have to jump over and over again to get it right...?

There's a hidden trigger on that screen. You don't have to suicide, just explore. On easy mode the location of it is 'given away' by a bit of backing.

THAT WAS HARD!!!!
Especially at the final zone. Everytime I finish a room, I think "Whew finally, the next room can't possibly be any worse than this."
I was wrong everytime...
I can't even begin to imagine what the hard mode is like...

It's just that first part, that you labeled "RUN!" Because of my computers lag, which is an advantage sometimes but a bad thing other times, I cant get across faster than the platform. :(

It's a bit tricky and lag certainly won't help the situation. In fact I don't see how lag (which surely is just bad framerate in single player games) could ever help in a 2D singleplayer game... all it does is make it harder to judge stuff!

My computer's FPS drops a tiny bit on the zigzag background screens, but if you're getting lag on this room, which doesn't have much moving stuff in it, it must be making the game quite hard to play for you  :victoria:

Actually, It makes timing puzzles much easier.
And the lag is just enough so it doesn't annoy me until it does.  :violet:
I am building a new computer anyhow to replace this one, so no worries. ILL GET IT EVENTAULLY

I saved at the checkpoint in the bottom-left of Forsaken before quitting, and now I'm stuck in there with no way to continue.

An invisible backup trigger in there would probably fix this issue... or simply removing the lines after the one that opens up the path.

Thanks for reporting this bug, TheWindFish. I'll fix it in the new version, which will come out some time after Terry releases the next patch. For now, if you just edit the offending gravity line out in the level editor, you'll be able to continue your game (PM me if you have any problems!)

I made the mistake of trying hard mode, and am on that Veni Vidi Vici rip-off. I'm pretty sure it's the last level, but I've lost all will to complete it.

It's just... ugh. There were so many times where one spike removal, one checkpoint addition or one extra space would've made it a really fun level, but as it is, it's just ridiculous. I guess easy is the much improved version, but it's too late for me to play that.

Status: 13/20 trinkets, gave up.

In my defense, I really do believe I've done everything I can, by providing two difficulty levels. The changes in the 'easy' mode were thought out in a way that makes the levels easier, without diluting the content, something I'm quite proud of achieving...

I guess you can't please everyone, and difficulty is the hardest thing for me to judge (I'm too much of a platformer nerd/expert for my own good :P ). Thanks for tying it anyway, and persevering.

Incidentally "easy" mode is only called such because "intermediate" didn't fit in the level select display.

I'm going through the easy version of this level in the new version to make a few subtle improvements, mainly in the Direct Mode and in giving the dialogs colour. Going through and playing around with it I found it's actually possible to get under the heart in "... The One You Love"  :D

No, I wondered the same, but I was able to recreate it. You have to time it perfectly so that the heart is as high as it can be when you're passing under, and that it's on it's 'small' frame of animation. The large frame will collide with you even at it's apex.

In the update I'm thinking of releasing, there are spikes under the heart  :D

Which is funny because it looks like the heart is bouncing on the spikes.

Don't worry, there was a lot of great stuff - and yeah, the easy mode does sound good. I just don't really want to pay through it all over again... it was really my fault more than yours :)

Upside down terminal!

(Not to rush you, but if you have the update ready by Sunday evening, I can make sure it's included in the 3DS version...)

Oh, cool! I'm pretty much done really. Playtesting's done, I just have to insert the coloured text commands. And then prolly playtest again quickly ;)

Here's a few screenies showing the kind of minor graphical update I'm giving the level. I'm also making a couple of bits easier.

Wow those are amazing! I knew you'd become creative with Direct Mode once you got it. Also, are you using the happy/sad commands for crewmates?

Thanks PJ... It's fun adding what is basically leftover junk graphics that were unused in the original game and making new stuff out of them.. I'm particularly pleased with the 'smog clouds' and some of the transitions between screens you can make with Direct. I didn't bother to make every screen a transition, though. I just did it where I thought it would add to the atmosphere.

I don't know how to use the new scripting commands, so as of yet, no, just graphic updates and a couple of level tweaks for the easier.

The smog clouds are very inventive! Anyway, for your future reference:

Colored Text - say(X,crewname)
Crewnames can be: Violet, Victoria, Vermilion, Verdigris, Vitellary, Viridian

Crew Mood Change - happy(crewname)
Crewnames can be: Violet, Victoria, Vermilion, Verdigris, Vitellary

Hope that helps! If needed, I can fix the scripts for you. I promise I won't change ANYTHING in the storyline at all.

I'm 99% done with updating the Hard Mode version of the level. It only took about an hour and a half, I was expecting it to be a lot more tedious. I did it by having 2 vvvvvv's open (that makes vvvvvvvvvvvv I guess) and copying the differences across.

So now you can suffer the evil version in glorious post-patch HD! I guess I'll send them both off to Terry tonight to see if he wants to host them.

i just bought vvvvvv on the 3ds ( it rocks btw ) and beat it, then i tried this mod and... i am stuck in the entryway to "the green room" (yes i know there is likely something i don't see, but i don't see it ) all i see is spikes and no way to make it to the first platform without invincible mode  :'(
can someone plz show some pics (or email me if those count as spoilers)

thanks

I looked through the entire map in the editor, and don't see anywhere called "the green room", so I guess you're referring to the first room in the green area? And I don't see anything in that room that should be a problem.

Could you give me an exact room name, and I'll try to help you out?

Yikes, now I'm worried there's a bug or something. That room should be pretty simple!

(It should just be a matter of stepping off onto the first platform.)

The two platforms at the top of the screen; are they not moving towards you?

Are you playing the game with invincibility mode on?

they are not moving at all and yes i have invincibility mode on. is that a problem?
Title: Re: D. 333333 now updated! Easy and Hard mode included! V2 Bug Fixes Inside!
Post by: Terry on January 01, 2012, 09:54:14 AM
Ah, that explains it.

Basically, invincibility mode isn't really "supported" for normal play. Using it can cause all sorts of glitches, including that one - it turns spikes into blocks, which isn't a problem for the normal VVVVVV levels (as in VVVVVV, spikes don't ordinarily collide with moving platforms) - but it is a problem for some player levels that are designed with overlapping spikes and platforms.

I'd suggest just turning off invincibility mode. The game's a lot more fun if you do! :viridian:

Brilliant.
Of all levels I've played (which is a lot), this is the one I like most. Good work.
(you may or may not read this but still)
Nice secret way to a trinket. Unusually good use of Direct Mode. Good story (I loved the 20 trinkets room). A bit on the hard side maybe (even the easy version), I struggled with the level the first time I played it, but otherwise, perfect. It's not very straight-forward how you open the last gravity line (to Vitellary) if you can't see the switch at the left, but after a while of walking back and forth I found it. This is the only thing I can say "negative", relly.

My top 3 is:
1: 333333 (it's awesome)
2: Reactor Disaster (aargh why can't you import levels to the 3DS ._. - also, some screens here are insanely hard, nice price for the reckless-look-a-like)
3: A New Dimension (I liked it very much, but it's a bit messy to get on hold of all the trinkets, and also, 1x1 tiles D: )

I've a question.
I downloaded the version at the first post. I've also played the 3DS version and I loved the use of Direct Mode there. Somehow, it seems that this version at the first post in this thread lacks this? Where is the version I'm looking for, i.e. the "3DS version" of it?

EDIT: Searched, it's not here...

I guess Sendy sent the version to Terry as it's included in the 3DS version, but it's not here. Which means that I'll have to play without Direct Mode changes I guess...

Hi... Sendy here. Just to say that it looks like the "final" version of my level (with better graphics and a few balancing issues) didn't make it to the PC version, though it was on the forum for a little while I guess. Kinda sad as I put in a lot of extra work and felt the enhancements really helped it. Still, I'm glad to find out that the 3DS at least got the latest version of the map :)

I'll ask Terry if he'd mind updating the old file on his website with the new one. I have both hard and easy mode with "advanced" (giggle) graphics and that's what people should be playing ;)

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but, seems justified.  :viridian:

Mind re-uploading them? You can upload them to the forum directly and they wont expire. :)

Oh, this level.  I can get through the Green Zone without too much trouble anymore.  The Red Zone is completely alien to me.  I had to invincibility-finish Pink/Purple and Blue because of two specific rooms.  *shudder*
