Title: Dimension WWWWWW
Post by: ToasterApocalypse on May 18, 2012, 04:49:23 AM
WWWWWW is a small(ish) level following the basic concept of VVVVVV. The ship hit more rock in this new dimension, and the crew must evacuate in a cheap warp token because the level editor doesn't give us teleporters.  :-X In some places, the other warp tokens were re-routed into the polar dimension, forcing you to get out. How very traditional.  ::)

Wow. I need better level names.  :D

Anyway, this Fragment of a level contains 3 levels and an overworld. (Like the demo of VVVVVV except slightly more.)
It's too easy fairly difficult and contains only 2 trinkets.

WARNINGS+SPOILERS
The lab level gets repetitive and boring.
The music breaks after you rescue  :victoria: the second time. Fixed by pressing 'M' twice.
This is my first level with direct mode tiling, so of course it's going to look sloppy.

It's my first level with an overworld, so there's going to be bugs. Feel free to report them.

And credit to FIQ for the ship's alarm sound.
I recommend against using it (you probably saw it in my bug list), but fine. :p

EDIT: The soundtrack bug also exists in 333333. Funny enough, it's also when you rescue Victoria.

I wonder what causes it?

Eh, that explains the previous line being played when (de)activating them. I had to edit the level and make  :vermillion: sound stupid to hide it  :-[

Eh, maybe I'll remove it.

If you know what you're doing, you can work-around that, but as told, I recommend against using it.

EDIT: If you really want the alarm, and don't know how you can turn it off properly, you can do this to avoid dialogs being played. Still, I recommend against it as a patch will ruin it, and that's your problem:

say(-1)
text(1,0,0,4)
say(4)
alarmoff
endcutscene
untilbars
loadscript(stop)

at the end of the script.

Interesting. I like levels like this.
Bugs:
1: In "More Inverse, More Space.", there is a black block right next to the platform with the C.
2: Rescuing Victoria, and rescuing Violet halts the sound. No idea why this happens, to be honest.
3: The entry to the laboratory is missing a music switch to Passion for exploring.

Are you aware how you can make scripts execute only once?
I find that most (if not all) of your scripts execute everytime you visit an area instead of once.

Also, the music shutting off seems to be there for *every crewmate*. I don't know why, but yeah..

I know it's something to do with ifflag, but I don't quite get it.

Also, I think it's something to do with the fact that there's no starting music, I just add the music using scripts.

Why do I feel like I'm not making any sense?  :verdigris:

EDIT: I fixed 2 of those bugs, (Still stumped at the music cancelling  :o) And I'll release it with 2 new levels (Warp zone and first intermission.)

SPOILERS FOR THE WARP ZONE:
3 rooms are ripped straight from VVVVVV, just a different color.
'Sticks And Stones' is a rip from 'Enjoy those repeats' from the final level.
'A-Maze-ing is a slightly edited version of 'Maze without an enterance'.
'Trouble-U is just 'This will make you flip'
I'm either going to delete those rooms or edit them a bit.

SPOILER FOR THE FIRST INTERMISSION
It's difficult  :D

I downloaded the file again, it seems unchanged? No warp zone area, etc.

EDIT: Oh, I read your post as it was already posted. Nvm then.

The warp zone is going to be a while, as of the first intermission to be released with it. I'll release it anyway, as you will have already saved all of the crewmates so you won't get to the teleporter to the first intermission (Unless you're cruel enough to leave Vitellary behind.)

Ok then! Intermission has 3 out of the planned 10 rooms.

EDIT: If I knew how to add screenshots, I would post a screenshot of my favorite room in the warpzone.

DOUBLE EDIT: I released the Warp Zone and the Intermission.

Not nearly as hard as ABCDEFG, but looks promising. I feel like I haven't done a part of the map though, because I got to Violet and rescued her(?) to find that Verdigris wasn't in the map yet. I also find that the most difficult area of the map was Mazes are for Squares. It's almost impossible, I had to use invincibility, but the second enemy in that room was the only thing impassable.

It's possible to get past it without invincibility, but it's difficult as you need to time it perfectly. I'll remove that when I release the next set of levels.

Just tiny question.

How does one use 'Iftrinkets'?
Title: Re: Dimension WWWWWW (Fragment)
Post by: FIQ on May 19, 2012, 09:17:50 AM
Nice.
Bugs:
1: In Warp Zone->Twists and Turns, the leftmost wall is one pixel off (the higher one is one pixel more wide than the bottom)
2: In Warp Zone->Trouble-U, the upper floor is a pixel off, the right is one pixel higher than the left
3: In Warp Zone->Giant Maze, at the bottom floor, you can go left and become stuck in the wall because the right has a block in the way.
4: In Intermission 1->The Polar Dimension Returns, the enemies is a bit glitchy
5: In Intermission 1->Angel Falls, flipping at the top, aside from being a shortcut, gets you stuck in the wall at the bottom. For some reason, the usual "getting stuck in the wall" action didn't happen, and Viridian just went through it as it was air. Weird, but... yeah, should be fixed anyway.

Also just a hint: one-way-walls glitch sometimes. Nothing bad happened the way you used it in the polar dimension, but just so you know.

Another hint: map(off) (the map is still logged however)

If you like, I can also fix the intermission background (just takes a few minutes of my time :p)

Just tiny question.

How does one use 'Iftrinkets'?
iftrinkets(amount,runscript)

While "runscript" is another script name. Note that script names should be lowercase, or the loadscript utilities doesn't work properly. This will trigger if you have amount or more trinkets

If you want it the other way around, you can use iftrinketsless(amount, runscript), which triggers if you have less than amount of trinkets (i.e. in all the cases when iftrinkets() fails)

i'm ok with slightly blue backgrounds. What I really want to know is how to use iftrinkets.

I've fixed all those bugs, and shall release them with the level that would be the tower, and the second intermission, where you will find Dia, the second of the 3 Viridians.

See my last post

Also, I hope you have taken into account that people might skip trinkets (*cough* the first level)? Skipping crewmates is always a bad idea, and usually the person just has himself to blame, but trinkets is another point.

It was a late post, I read it. I did all of that, with 8 trinkets (I removed all of the optional trinkets and added ones that are vital to collect at the end of every zone) as there is no 'Ifcrewmates'. It still doesn't work, because I can still de-activate the warps leading to the final area without all 8 trinkets.

Code: [Select]
iftrinkets(8, clearwarp)
Is it the space or something that made it go wrong?  :victoria:

That should work, but try removing the space.
Also make sure that "clearwarp" is all lowercase as the script name. Uppercase somewhere will make it so it doesn't work.

Ok.

UPDATE: I updated the download link, so now it has bugfixes, and 2 new levels. A gravitron and... Overused DTTHW mechanics.  :o

EDIT: I just tried that. No caps, no space, and still doesn't work.

Huh?
I ran through your level, skipped a crewmate to get all the trinkets and try it for myself. It seems as it's working. :p (the warp tokens disappeared from the crossway right next to Warp Zone when getting 8 trinkets)

Also, I like your way of doing The Gravitron. :)

But um, you can get to the "wrong" side by flipping. How about a warp token instead and completly closed lines?

Also, what happened to the end of Space Station 2? (I'll just call it it, as it works the same as in the usual VVVVVV dimension, and I didn't found it mentioned anywhere else)

Interesting way of making a The Tower-style level. I like it. :P

Bugs:
1: Warp Zone->Giant Maze was the most annoying screen ever this release. No offense though - I don't mind a maze puzzle. But pleease, make the paths *a bit* less narrow. Took like 50 tries for me to get Viridian into one of those.. D:
2: The Tower->I'm Not A Divot, when talking with the computer, there is a typo. At the end of the dialog, Viridian says "Well, ...", but in the dialog he says "Wll, ...".

Oh.
By the way, you don't HAVE to use trinkets. You can do something like this:

initscript
(The things that happen at the beginning of the level, blah blah...)
flag(1,on)
flag(2,on)
flag(3,on)
...
flag(8,on)
And then, everytime you save a crewmate, have a specific flag turned off, like, for example at the end of SS1:
flag(1,off)

Then, at the warp token check, you can do this:
ifflag(1,stop)
ifflag(2,stop)
ifflag(3,stop)
...
ifflag(8,stop)
destroy(warptokens)

There's probably better ways to do this, but I would do it this way.

(stop being a script with the command "stop")

Question time.

Is that in 1, 2 or more scripts?

EDIT: Figured it out, but at the beginning of the game there's no cutscene, just the bars.

SECOND EDIT: It's actually ALL of the cutscenes.

:victoria:Does this mean there'll be no final area and the level permanently unfinished?

Title: Re: Dimension WWWWWW (Fragment)

I propose this:
In your script called 1 (the one used at the beginning), at the bottom, insert this:

flag(1,on)
flag(2,on)
flag(3,on)
flag(4,on)
flag(5,on)
flag(6,on)
flag(7,on)
flag(8,on)

Then, everytime a crewmate talk with you, turn off 1 of these flags. For example, when talking to Victoria, insert this at the bottom:

flag(1,off)

Then, in your script "ifcrewmates", do this:

ifflag(1,stop)
ifflag(2,stop)
ifflag(3,stop)
ifflag(4,stop)
ifflag(5,stop)
ifflag(6,stop)
ifflag(7,stop)
ifflag(8,stop)
destroy(warptokens)

This will first check if flag 1 is on (turned on by the start of the level). If it is, then the script is halted from execution.
If it's off (turned off by finishing the 1st level), check flag 2 the same way. Then the 3rd flag. Then the 4th. And so on.
If it fails every check (every flag is off - every area is explored) - disable warplines

I propose this:
In your script called 1 (the one used at the beginning), at the bottom, insert this:

flag(1,on)
flag(2,on)
flag(3,on)
flag(4,on)
flag(5,on)

Then, everytime a crewmate talk with you, turn off 1 of these flags. For example, when talking to Victoria, insert this at the bottom:

ifflag(3,stop)
ifflag(4,stop)
ifflag(5,stop)

ifflag(7,stop)
ifflag(8,stop)
destroy(warptokens)

This will first check if flag 1 is on (turned on by the start of the level). If it is, then the script is halted from execution.
If it's off (turned off by finishing the 1st level), check flag 2 the same way. Then the 3rd flag. Then the 4th. And so on.
If it fails every check (every flag is off - every area is explored) - disable warplines

:victoria:'s cutscene is still broken with that  :(

EDIT: I fixed it, and the script works. Final area shall be created.

Stupid question time: How do I post screenshots? I'm gonna post some sneak peeks at the final area.

Find "Print Screen", press it when having VVVVVV open. Open mspaint, paste. Save it, and go to http://tinypic.com. Upload your image and get the link to it, and place it here.

Ugh, I had to go to level editor and help myself in "Room of worry" and I had to use invisiblity in "The run".. ...and in the rest of the level. It looked like impossible... Good level but the final level could have been easier. Also, music didn't work for me, maybe becauce I was using 2.0 to play it? How did you make those fast disappearing small blocks wich looks like spikes in the level editor?

Direct mode, which is 2.1 sadly.

Why sadly? Of coure I have the 2.1 version too. :viridian: I'll try that direct mode later, since it can do that kind of blocks. :vitellary:

I got stuck between two warp lines in Giant Maze. :C And I couldn't figure out how to get out of the maze because you can't go in the holes the size of your player.

Me neither. I used the level editor to advance.

You can advance (by going in the hole the size of the player), but it's insanely hard and frustrating. I tried to told Toaster this when this was still in beta stage, but he never changed the room...

I finished the v.1.2 of the level with 9/10 trinkets (skipped the "Cannonballs" trinket). I forgot to view the time, I guess it's ≈1h 30min. I forgot to view the number of deaths too, but they were >1100.

Originality: I see you tried to create a level equal to VVVVVV in terms of story and level structure. Considering that's original because there isn't a level that does the same (that I know), but not original because it's equal too VVVVVV, I'll give you medium rating, adding 2 points because of the extra sub levels and some challenges. Rating: 7/10 :verdigris:
Level structure: I like levels with sub-levels (which you can do at any order). I also like open areas where you can explore. Besides the original sub levels form VVVVVV, you added 2 extra Final challenges. You did switch the crewmates' levels. Rating: 7/10 :verdigris:
Story: Besides the original story form VVVVVV, you added the 3 :viridian: s and the fact that they crashed there after exiting form D.VVVVVV. The rest was the same. Rating: 8/10 :viridian:
Design: You used Direct mode many times, some times to avoid creating single tiles that don't look good. I still saw some of those in SS2, but I think there weren't more. I liked how you used the Final Level background tiles to hide a way to go (because they look like walls!) However, you used those above and below the spikes in the WWWWWW sequence, so, when :viridian: touches the spikes, he/she passes through them, overlapping the background tiles. You should replace those with wall tiles. Rating: 9/10 :viridian:
Difficulty Balance: Note: Most of the level was medium difficulty. The hard parts were the Gravitron and the last 3 parts (out of 4) of the Final Level. The hardest rooms must have been "Gem Mine", "Room of Worry", the WWWWWW sequence and "Tourist Trap". Note: that last room of the third part of the Final Level was easy after 8 deaths, besides the last enemies. The survival rooms seem like random timing and dodging, but they were easier than the hardest rooms I mentioned. You shouldn't put unexpected deaths, like in "London Bridge is falling down" and in "W curve". After touching the warp token in "Jail Cell", you may die before touching the CP. Rating: 6/10 :verdigris:
Glitch Amount: Some scripts repeat. Referring to what I said about "Jail Cell" above, after dying, the whole cutscene repeats. The music sometimes stops after rescuing a cremate, but not always, and that may be solved by pressing M twice. Rating: 8/10 :viridian:
Total rating: 15 :shiny:/20

EDIT: Fixed some writing mistakes.
EDIT 2: Wrote more comments.
