A $15 price tag was indeed what it used to be.

It was lowered with 2.0, you know because 2.0 was worse than 1.2. Or is it?

(that, or because so many places complained on that it was too expensive to be worth it)

I suspect it was lowered before, like when it was released on Steam.
I once read something about that, but I can't find it now... I'll search more.
Anyway, I first got VVVVVV in the Mac App Store, which had 1.2. (and still has). The price was surely less than 15$... perhaps 5$? I don't live in the US.
EDIT: Yes, it was lowered in September 2010, found an old post saying that:
