It looks like embedded YouTube players stop working if there are too many of them on one page. If the music stops playing, just refreshing the page seems to get them working again!
Right now, somewhere in the world, somebody is working on a rock cover of a Final Fantasy song and uploading it to YouTube. Or at least, I can only assume. After all, it turns out there are about a hundred thousand of them.
So! Here are my favourites!
I was going to post four or five, but I kept finding more that I liked, got a bit carried away, and actually posted about twenty videos, heh. Well, that happens when you discover something awesome.
The first two are probably my favourites – first up, this Joseph Dennis guy. Instead of a plain FFVI battle theme cover, he totally goes his own way with it:
Then there’s this great acoustic cover of “Forever Rachel”, again from Final Fantasy VI. Just maybe the most underrated song in the series, I think.
There are quite a few more, so hit the button to see the rest!
Here’s a really cool version of the Final Fantasy III (J) battle themes (which is the earliest song that appears here):
And here’s another Final Fantasy VI acoustic piece I liked:
I love this song – Gilgamesh’s theme from FFV. This guy is definitely one of the best musicians doing this whole FF YouTube thing. Like the first guy, instead of just doing a simple cover, he improvises and takes it in his own direction – but I’m not sure the bass he uses on the synth really works. Still, really great guitar song, and definitely one of the best in terms of sheer musical talent.
The same song, but a much more faithful version. Until about half way through, that is, after which it appears to become complete improvisation.
There was this one guy going out of his way to do obscure FF songs – and this was one of his best 🙂
Beautiful.
I can’t believe someone thought to cover Strago’s theme – or that it came out as good as it did…
Hehe. This is kind of a neat trick.
I really liked this version of Aerith’s theme – and the full band makes a nice change from the “guy in front of a webcam” thing.
This guy again. Bloody hell that’s good.
While I’m not especially fond of FFX’s soundtrack, I think this piece is quite good – and this performance is excellent.
Here’s the first guy again. The girl is totally wrong, by the way – taking a swig of vodka and then proceeding to play a Final Fantasy song is the very definition of cool.
Thought this might break it up again. Also, it’s bloody spectacular.
This guy seems to come up first in every search – and to be fair, it’s not a bad cover.
Yet another great cover. I think I read somewhere that this particular song is the most covered FF song ever or something – but I don’t know that I believe it. Anyway, it’s a great cover, and it’s by the guy who did the Stragos cover above.
And now for something completly different!
Man, this guy is inhuman.
And this seemed like a good one to end on.
Hmm, you know, I think I was like, going to write a proper blog entry or something about this whole “Indie game designer” thing, but somehow got distracted when I found the first of these videos. Nevermind though, eh?
Damn that kid who did the Battle with Gilgamesh theme… This is why I don’t watch Youtube guitarists anymore; the only thing they do is discourage me from picking up my guitar again! :p Those fucking inhuman sweep picking parts at the beginning of the ff5 song, jesus christ… I can’t even play lead!
I had to stop watching them anyway, because the sound on the videos stopped working after I watched a certain amount for some reason. Probably just as well, I think I would’ve ebay’d my gear if I’d watched any more. :p
The guy in the first video is just playing over The Black Mages’ version of that song, by the way– He really does deviate from it in the last part though, that was quite cool.
Well, looks like it’s back to the grindstone for me… Doesn’t matter how good I might be able to make things sound in the mix, that’s still no excuse for the fact that I fall flat on my face when asked to play anything remotely complex in person. *Locks self in studio with guitar* I’ll be back in thirty years. :p

Yeah, I actually had the same problem, but I figured it was just my setup – a quick refresh of the page seems to fix it anyways.
Ah, my mistake 🙁 Perhaps I should change the post around a little – maybe even cull about half of these videos? Heh. There are so many videos for so many games that I could probably do a weekly article on them. You should see some of the Sonic the Hedgehog ones, for example 😛
Heh, I doubt that somehow 🙂
Anyway, I’m sure I feel much worse – I’m so out of practice these days I’m struggling to play chords 😥
No, seriously, it’s some kind of disorder– Whenever someone says “Hey, play something complex” I literally fall flat on my face, right then and there. Hurts like a bitch, to be honest.
…Nah, in all seriousness, these videos have got me back in the groove of actually practicing and pushing myself now and then instead of just becoming complacent with my somewhat limited playing. 🙂
Awesome Casino Night Zone cover, too– Man, that makes me want to go back and play that game… Too bad I’m already struggling to finish at least 9 games as it is. x_X that’s a habit I really need to break. Oh, that reminds me… Have you heard about the new Sonic RPG for the DS being developed by Bioware? Interesting news… Being the Sonic fan that I am I’ll probably end up checking it out, though it’s also worthy of note that I often make somewhat regrettable decisions. :p It could be interesting, though– who knows?
~Josiah
😯 Being the Bioware fan that I am, I’ll almost definitely check that out! Well, KOTR and NWN weren’t really my thing, but… I dunno, maybe it’s a return to form for them?
…with a Sonic RPG…
Actually scrap that – I think I’ll give it a miss 😀
Hahaha, well I’ll be checking it out, so I’ll let you know how it is. 😉 I have at least some hope, because A. it’s not developed by Sega or Sonic Team, and B. Sonic And The Secret Rings was actually pretty good– worth playing at least– so maybe that marks at least some kind of return to form for the series. As long as they ditch all those horribly designed extraneous characters and keep it to the basic Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, I think it’ll have a chance. I just can’t stand the voices of the ‘new’ characters; me and a friend played Sonic Heroes for about 15 minutes and just got so pissed off at the abysmal voicing of ‘Big the Cat’ (what kind of name IS that, anyway?) that we just couldn’t stand to see if the rest of the game was actually decent or not. That voice work was traumatizing, I tell ya.
~Josiah
