On the final version of Self Destruct

It’s finally happened – I’ve been knocked off the first page of the Self Destruct highscores! 😥

I really can’t believe how well some people are doing – the top score is over 3 million, well above what I can manage – but more than that I don’t get why all the top scorers are just using random letters as handles 😛 Like, the top guy at the moment is “Adjudicator”, which is fine, but then it’s stuff like “kt”, “blank” (I have a little script setup to change blank entries into the word “blank”), “aaa”, “opqr”, “ono”, “ry”, and even just “1” – whereas at least the second page has some proper handles!

My best theory right now is that it’s as a result of Japanese players (which I’m basing on the fact that I got mentioned on a few Japanese blogs, yey), and at the moment the game only supports english letters. I had some symbol support, but it wasn’t working properly with the scripts on the server and I had to take it out…

So, to do for the final version: add unicode support to the highscore table 😛 That might require changing the font, I’ll have to look into that…

Also, it’s a shame that the minimum entry score on the table is now so high – to get into 50th place, you need a score of 1.3 million, which has to be pretty discouraging. I think I’ll add loads and loads more pages to the final version – maybe as much as 250 entries, just to somewhat futureproof it.

The results of this contest are out on Wednesday, so I’m hoping to put this together sometime at the end of next week. Here’s the to do list as it stands:

  • Will definitely do:
  • – Allow users to record replays (done)
  • – Add offline mode
  • – Add joypad support
  • – Fix item placement bug with motherships
  • – Add more pages to the highscores
  • – Fix music looping bug on menu screen
  • Will possibly do:
  • – Unicode support for the highscore table
  • – Allow users to upload screen recordings
  • – Maybe talk to Annabelle about adding shield graphics, changing powerups
  • – Add frame skipping support for slower computers

If there’s anything else you think I should add, do let me know – there’s a very good chance this will be the last time I update it (unless there’s some serious bug I’ve overlooked)…

This game’s certainly making the rounds… I saw it posted on The Shizz (the forum for Dwelling of Duels, among other related stuff) earlier today 🙂

“Add joypad support” — That would be a cool feature; hopefully it will work with the Xbox controller (through the “Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows”).

This game is really sweet. Thanks. The only thing I can think of is that its kinda hard to see the shield and firepower bars in the bottom left on my 24″ monitor. If they were bigger or vertically centered it might be easier to see them. Or maybe I’m just too close to my screen…

oops I meant “bottom right” not “bottom left”

Alright so, that should be simple enough 🙂
