VVVVVV at Eurogamer Expo 2009

BIG news – at the end of October, I’ll be at this year’s Eurogamer Expo in London with VVVVVV. If you’re planning to go, come say hi! VVVVVV’s part of the event’s “Indie Games Arcade” along with a bunch of other cool games.

It’s on the 30th and 31st of October at Old Billingsgate, just off London Bridge. Find out more here. (the event’s also in Leeds for two days, but unfortunately I can’t make that venue)

VVVVVV is pretty much done at this point, but it might be a while before I’m ready to call it “finished”. It’s very important to me that the game gels together properly. I don’t want to rush it!

VVVVVV Gameplay Video

Posted in VVVVVV

VVVVVV started as a design exercise. I wanted to work on something a little lighter for a while, and I thought it would only take a week, maybe two. I didn’t for a second think I’d still be working on it almost three and a half months later.

I know I’ve said this before, but I’m hoping to finish this up in the new few weeks. More info soon!

Coming Soon: A VVVVVV Trailer

I’ve been working on making a short trailer for VVVVVV, which, in all likelyhood, I’ll be posting tomorrow! In anticipation, here are some VVVVVV videos you may have missed:

First up, Tim. W’s very early preview footage of the prototype from back in June. It’s super mysterious and doesn’t spoil anything 🙂

Next up: Bytejacker had a quick look at the same preview on their June 18th episode. Anthony mentioned that it would probably be finished in “a couple of weeks”. “lol”

Finally, Increpare has something he would like to discuss with you:

Ascent Postmortem

So, here’s what I put together for Ludum Dare 15, in the end. It’s a rushed little platformer called Ascent. You’re at the bottom of a deep cavern, and you have to climb out of it. Or, er, double jump your way out. oh also watch out for the cannons

I’m not really that happy with how it turned out – it’s not even close to my original idea, which was to make a platform-puzzler. The problem is that I made a mess of my time; I spent Saturday working on a game that wasn’t going anywhere, then started from scratch on Sunday. And then by about 1am, it was looking like my Sunday game wasn’t going anywhere either…

So I figured finally finishing something for a Ludum Dare was more important than anything else at that point – I took what I had, made a few changes and turned it into a quick, traditional platformer. Thankfully I had enough implemented elements in the game to make a couple of interesting challenges, but it’s pretty weak, and so rushed that I didn’t even have time to tile the second map properly. My description on the Ludum Dare upload page just reads “aggh aggh aggh 2 minutes left”, which should give you some idea of the panic I was in on Sunday night.

On the plus side though: I finally finished a game for Ludum Dare on time! Hopefully next time I’ll be better prepared and be able to make something I’m happier with!
