Let’s go exploring

Time for an announcement! 🙂 After almost seven months of work, I’m nearly ready to release VVVVVV. Over the last few days I decided on a date:

VVVVVV will be available on Sunday the 10th of January, 2010.

That should give me enough time to get everything ready – make a demo, make a website and set everything up, all that stuff. I already have lots of plans for the games I wanna make next year if this works out! 🙂

So, here’s the plan:

– The game will be sold through its website thelettervsixtim.es for $15.

I’ll continue taking preorders for $10 for another few days through paypal, up until a week before the release (the 3rd of January). (edit: no longer available! 3rd Jan)

– It’ll be available as a downloadable game for Windows, Mac and Linux.

– I’m not using serial codes, online activation, or any other DRM.

– There will be a demo!

– I’ll probably be updating the site quite a bit over the next fortnight or so. Be sure to check back!

I think that’s everything. Are you excited? I’m excited! (also; sleep deprived)

This is just plain awesome. Pure and utter extacy awaits the world! Yay!

  2. allen on December 31st, 2009

finally! No DRM=awesome! (although I didn’t mind the serial keys in Saira)

Oddly enough, the main theme was playing in my head earlier today for no clear reason at all.

Hope the release goes as smooth and error free as possible.

Where can I preorder the game?

    Do I just make a $10 donation?

  4. Wham Bam Ham Man on December 31st, 2009

I’d quite like to know the same as Aengus: how do I track my preorder exactly? Will you email the game to us or something?

What are gonna be the payment methods in the website? Paypal hates me and my country 🙁

About donations: I had been replying to each until recently, but I’ve had a bit of a backlog of email since Christmas and with working on this and everything I haven’t caught up yet… I’ll confirm everything as soon as I have a chance!

Sorry if you’re having trouble with paypal though, I don’t really know what to do about that… I’m using fastspring to sell the game on the 10th, though!

Just finished the demo with the 20 trinkets. My sense of achievement is super high.

Well, anyway, I’ll wait for the 10th

I wish I had preordered. Still, I will purchase this ASAP. It looks (and sounds!) so goooooooood!

I happened to come across the beta version and I played through it. It was great, and I will get a copy or two of the finished game despite having already seen the beta – especially since you’re providing binaries for Linux. I thought it was going to be Flash, but I guess you’ve done it with SDL.

  32. zacH on January 5th, 2010

I AM SO HAPPY I PREORDERED! I haven’t played the demo or anything, but I very much wanted to support your work… and now to hear that you’re even putting out a native linux build? I’m grinning ear-to-ear. Thanks for supporting linux gaming, I can’t wait for the 10th!

    Great work and great soundtrack.
I missed the pre-order and I believe 15$ is slightly pushing it, but I will still buy it, only because I believe in indie developers. But imo, it still is slightly too much, and you should instead give people the choice to pay extra.

    Oh well great work.

  35. Anonymous on January 9th, 2010

Think you could see about getting it released on Steam?

  36. rick on January 9th, 2010

    mac means including power pc/10.4?

  37. Zxaber on January 9th, 2010

Now, I played the demo. Found it on a chan, before I knew it was leaked. That’s what led to me finding this site, and pre-ordering the game.

That all being said, I don’t remember that screen being orientated like that. Did you add screen flipping as well?

  38. ME-tan on January 10th, 2010

The demo was posted on 4chan a while ago and I’ve been playing since then. I am currently trying to get through “veni, vidi, vici” and so on. This game is infuriating yet I can’t stop playing. I suspect I’ll be picking up a copy when I get paid…

  39. Shasharla on January 10th, 2010

I’m so excited! I can hardly wait till it’s released.

  40. StephenM3 on January 10th, 2010

Guys, that “demo” that’s going around isn’t a demo, it was the full blown beta, that some of us payed 20 bucks for access to. So please stop rubbing it in our faces.

  41. Zxaber on January 10th, 2010

Yeah, I meant beta, not demo. Also, I wasn’t trying to gloat about it, so sorry if thats the impression I gave. More or less, I was trying to give a lighter side to the leak. I’d have never known about this game without it.

  42. ME-tan on January 10th, 2010

@Zxaber Likewise, I am definately getting a copy, and telling my friends.

What were you smoking when you put the sad psychadelic elephant in?

  43. Nick on January 10th, 2010

So the game is out today yeah..? Does anyone know what time it’ll be up on the VVVVVV site? It’s 4:40pm here which would be the same time in Ireland, so I’m wondering when it’ll be made available! I just saw the video demo and it looks superb. =D

  44. TS on January 10th, 2010

I’m have been waiting for the release as well. It’ll be hopefully this day. Maybe Terry could leave some comment about the situation.

  45. Terry on January 10th, 2010

    I’m doing my best!

It’ll be late, but I think I’ll have it out today 🙂

  46. Anonymous on January 10th, 2010

    Don’t rush it. 🙂

  47. Nick on January 10th, 2010

Ahh great stuff Terry, thanks for the update! I’ve been having a play through some of the other games on here, they’re fantastic! The Best Years Of My Life and Don’t Look Back are great, the minimalism and olschool style of them really appeals to me. =)

I found out about VVVVVV from this list of top 10 indie games of ’09 (though I guess strictly VVVVVV looks to be 2010!) – https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/26241/Gamasutras_Best_Of_2009_Top_10_Indie_Games.php

Lots of great stuff on there. =p
