Cool, huh? They were knitted by TIGSource poster Saint – he’s also knitted Aquaria socks, Fez socks, Hero Core socks, a Star Guard beanie – and he’s auctioning the whole lot off for the charity Child’s Play on ebay.
I think this is incredibly cool and generous, so I wanted to make some small contribution towards it. I’m offering a free, giftable copy of VVVVVV on steam to everyone who bids on the VVVVVV socks! Spread the word 🙂 (Here’s the VVVVVV sock auction.)
[21st Nov, Edit] The auction has ended, but unfortunately the winner bidder retracted his bid. The auction holder, Saint, is currently going through the list making eBay second chance offers. However, because they take an awful lot of time and effort to deal with, we’re only allowing so many before we rerun the auction.
I’m seeing a couple of comments here along the lines of “Oh, I made a bid and I would have totally paid!“. Needless to say I’m a bit sceptical, but if that’s true, feel free to contact Saint at the email address here, and tell him what your eBay username and bid amount was! If none of the top ten bidders pay up, then the socks will be offered to the person who makes the highest legitimate bid by email to Saint. Every bidder below the paying bidder will get a free copy of VVVVVV.
(if Saint doesn’t hear from anyone, then he’ll rerun the auction instead.)
This whole thing sucks. At first, I felt it was nothing but a good thing to bring more awareness to child’s play, Terry’s game, and to raise a good amount of money for an awesome cause. Now, it looks like it is turning sour and it looks like Terry is backing out of his promise (which is nothing but bad imo). I’ll still be donating money to child’s play no matter how this auction turns out, but if it turns out for the worse and Terry doesn’t follow through with his promise, I’ll be avoiding any games from him in the future. I can’t stand people who back out of promises. Don’t say it if you can’t deliver. The same goes for most of the bidders right now too!
@Thomas – obviously the new users aren’t serious bids; they’re just people jumping on the bandwagon. So I presume they won’t be counted (though it’s up to Saint; it’s his auction).
In any case, I don’t think there’s been a serious bid on this ever since it hit triple digits. You could force poor saint to go through 100 retractions and you’d have the same result – it’s been quite clear ever since the bids started pouring in from the cheapassgamer thread that nobody has any intention of actually paying. You’re right – it is very sad how this looks to be turning out.
For the record, I’d love nothing more than for the winning bid to actually be sincere. I don’t give a toss about giving away a few copies of the game, especially if it means making that much money for a children’s charity.

for example there’s people with 1000 feedback who probably won’t want to this bid to damage they’re feedback

Why are you even allowing bid retractions? Aren’t ebay bids legally binding? If the winning bidder backs out, just cancel it.
i would say the fairest thing to do is to make null all bids above the person who actually pays.

I know there is no bonus VVVVVV copy, but have you thinked about bidding on the other items that Saint is auctioning. Less than two days to go and some of them all still so low that poor Saint will be losing money with the shipping fare. C’mon guys, it’s for a good cause.
Saint will not be seeing any money either way – all proceeds go to charity directly and by doing this he’s set himself up to lose the shipping money no matter what the bidding ends up to.
@SoulEye – Yes, I was very aware of that -I know Saint will not be seeing a penny. It was just a way of saying that the shipping could be even more expensive than the money raised, and that’s a pitty. It took time and money to craft them, announce them on ebay, ship them once the auction ends…
How did this auction end?
We dunno yet, it only just ended. The winning bidder appears to have a 100% feedback rating with 31 items. I’ll let you know when I hear anything.
Ok, I’ve just heard that the winning bidder doesn’t intend to pay. Saint will probably start going through the list today.
@Terry – If finally none of the 10 top bidders is willing to pay that would be terrible. In that case you will not be giving away the copies, but have you considered giving 11 spare copies of your fabulous game to the 11 winners-that-pay of Saint’s other items? You know, just to reward them for their generosity and good will. Just kidding… or not…
And of course I’m not one of these top bidders, noooo… 😉
I made a much more reasonable (sub-$500) bid that I fully intended on paying had I won. I’ll be sort of sad if I don’t end up getting a key for VVVVVV. I have been planning on it, thinking that I basically “had a copy” for some time now.
I wonder if the other top 10 bidders with 0 feedback intend to pay! Even if one of them does, why did Saint allow 0 feedback bidders in this auction?
It’s shame. Though my advice for Saint would be to contact the 10 highest bidders with about 10 feedback, rather than those with zero feedback, just in to increase the chances.
Mitch: If you really have made a serious bid at that price, contact Saint and he’ll offer you the second chance bid.
I had a relatively low bid in the 200s that I intended to pay, too.

Its sad that it ended this way. Though it was pretty clear that no one would pay I still hoped it would end well. Everyone who just bid without planning to pay or even made faje accounts shall he damned!

And this is one of many reasons why people have drifted away from eBay to other auction/purchase services.
I’ll throw this up on Twitter to encourage people who might have bid to contact Saint, but this is just a tragedy. I hope *some* good for the organization comes out of it, though.
(And for the record–I didn’t bid, I wasn’t planning on it, but I took the offer to mean “the winner of the auction gets a free copy of the game”, not “everyone who bids anything gets a copy”. Pity my interpretation wasn’t the correct one.)

any news? I bad a bid for about £60 that I would’ve honoured (obviously I was secretly hoping someone would outbid me, but I would have paid if it came to it). I saw it as sort of a reverse reverse auction…

If the guy bided, how can he be allowed to ‘pull out’? Doesn’t that contradict the whole concept of an auction? PayPal/eBay should get the money from him, one way or another.
