The Tower of Power” is a VVVVVV level that doesn’t have any checkpoints. Yikes!

That sounds crazy, of course, but the reason it works here is that the level is so carefully designed around that core idea – it’s structured as a central hub with a linearly unlocked set of challenges as you get further and further into it, using trinkets as keys.

The really brilliant thing about it is how it makes even simple challenges feel exciting and dangerous in a way that VVVVVV levels normally don’t – there’s nothing particularly hard in this level, but the cost of failure is so much higher than usual that you’ll end up approaching it very differently.

It’s also notable for having the most extensive use of scripting I’ve seen in a VVVVVV level so far. Highly recommended!

(Randomnine, the creator of this level, wrote a great blog post here about the level’s design, which I recommend checking out after you’ve played it!)

To play a VVVVVV player level, extract the .vvvvvv file into your VVVVVV levels folder. On windows, that should be in My Documents/VVVVVV, on Mac it’s Documents/VVVVVV, on Linux it’s ~/.vvvvvv

  1. Played this earlier today and loved it. And let me say, I really like the potential for these VVVVVV levels to introduce me to designers I haven’t encountered before. Just checked out Randomnine’s Beacon, which was really great.

  2. Right, this one is too hard for me! But I felt it wouldn’t have looked out of place as part of the main VVVVVV game, like a side quest or something. It was really professionally done.

  3. This one is fantastic. The “gimmick” is backed up with legitimate challenges and great design. The bit of plot, and trinkets as power cells, were well done too!

  4. to pass the halo level you have to go to the terminals 01, 02, 04, 08, 16, and 32 and read them until it says xxxxxx= 42. once it says that then go back to the smartlocked terminal and it will be open. dont give up, just keep looking at the terminals!! good luck XD

  5. This level is really something else…. It’s not like any other level I’ve played. It’s a very creative level and I loved it. Very well done..

  6. Not to boast, but I have made a REALLY hard level that has no checkpoints. It is SO hard that not even my father can complete it. It is called “No Death Mode” .My age is 9.
