Hey everyone! I have lots of big annoucements about VVVVVV today, so let’s get to it!
VVVVVV: Make and Play Edition
Let’s start with what I consider the really important thing – inspired by things like Knytt Stories and DROD: Architect’s Edition, I’m releasing a special build of VVVVVV on Windows, Mac and Linux today. It’s called VVVVVV: Make and Play Edition, and it’s completely free. This version of the game only includes the player levels and the level editor – which means that, from now on, the tools to make and play VVVVVV player levels are completely free.
People have done some really incredible things with the VVVVVV editor. I want to share that work as far and wide as I can!
Lots of new VVVVVV ports
VVVVVV is now available on iPhone, iPad, Android, and OUYA!
These ports have been quite a long time coming! Actually, I originally started the iPhone port before I started Super Hexagon, way back in 2012. So it feels very, very good to finally have it finished, and released. This is something I felt I really had to take on myself – VVVVVV’s important to me, and it was really important to me that this be done right. I wanted the game to be as good as it could be on mobile. I feel very good about how it’s turned out!
You can get it from here:
Nicalis have been working on a Vita port as well – this should be coming out sometime this summmer!
Super Gravitron
Surprise! Today I’m also releasing another game on iOS and Android: Super Gravitron. It’s a little minigame that you might remember from the end of VVVVVV!
It’s acting as sort of a demo, but mostly I just think it happens to work really well as it’s own thing on mobile. And it’s completely free! Get it here:
Version 2.2
Thanks to Ethan Lee, VVVVVV on desktop has finally gotten an update! Version 2.2 fixes a bunch of long standing bugs (for example, player level warp lines) and makes the 2.1 changes official (like player maps, coloured text in player levels, editor direct mode, etc).
If you’re on steam, this update also adds achievements! They’re the same ones that VVVVVV always had, except now they’re recognised by steam. If you’ve already got them, log into today and you should get awarded a bunch of them at once, which is extremely satisfying!
MMMMMM
Finally – remember that amazing Metal Medley of VVVVVV music by @FamilyJules7x? Yeah, both Souleye and I were seriously impressed!
Introducing: MMMMMM! A complete Metal cover of the VVVVVV soundtrack! You can pick it up today directly from Souleye!
The soundtrack comes with a mod, which you can install in your player level directory to play the game with the metal soundtrack instead of the original one!
That’s all, everyone! Thanks for playing!
Awesome! 😀
You forgot to mention that the Humble Bundle version was updated too. 🙂
Is there a detailed changelog that I could read somewhere?
awesome! I’m gonna get downloading right now 😀
Cool! Going to grab a copy of the Android version, and update my VVVVVV on desktop. Thanks for awesomeness!
How do I update my VVVVVV if I got it from Humble Bundle?
Fantastic. Any chance of a gamepad update for the Steam version?
Holy sh*t! Too much stuff for to check. Glad to see that long wanted 2.2 desktop release! Thanks, Terry!
MMMMMM is so hard to parse omg yes perfect.
The “Game Options” menu in the “Make & Play” edition has messed up descriptions for entries since you conveniently removed the “unlock modes” menu entry. Just saying 😛
Yeah, just saw that on twitter! I’ll fix it in a minor patch soon 🙂
Will the GOG version of VVVVVV be updated too?
I would buy the android version now but I’m currently 70c too poor :(((( Oh well. Super Gravitron is fun.
I’ve played super gravitron obsessively for years, with a high score of like 6 minutes, so this news is absolutely delightful for me
Great! I love any reason to play it all over again!
Is it me, or is the Predestined Fate remix not in the Windows version? Reportedly, it’s in the Mac version and can be played with music(15a), but that doesn’t work on Windows. The vvvvvvmusic.vvv files from Windows and Mac also have a 3MB difference (the mac one is bigger).
Dealbreaker: does the Android version support gamepads?
I am going to make the purchase as soon as I can find my iTunes cards. I’ve been waiting for this to happen and now it’s here 🙂
And I previewed MMMMMM (the music, not the VVVVVV remake) – Total epicness. (Spell check says that’s not a word, but whatever)
Version 2.2 crashed a lot of times when I was playing The Final Level in time trial mode.

For anyone who cares, I made a fix for the VVVVVV M&P Windows version, concerning the Predestined Fate remix. Download the Mac or Linux version, find the vvvvvvmusic.vvv file, and replace the music file in the Windows version with the Mac/Linux one. Then you can use music(15a) in your scripts to use it. I hope Terry fixes it soon.
The Android port is pure awesomeness!
All that you need now is a Wii U port of VVVVVV! Could you imagine playing on the big screen, with the map on the gamepad??? I’d buy that 3x over!
Nice work!
Why is the game so blurry on retina iPad? App loading page is nice and crisp but menu and game look blurry (up-scaled image with smoothing on?). I want it nice and scrisp and pixelly on iPad too.
Excellent updates and it works great on Android. Just one problem, it doesn’t seem to have a clean way to exit the game (or I’m missing something obvious)
Like some others here, I’d love to know if the Android version supports a gamepad. Would love to play it on the NVIDIA SHIELD.
I believe the Linux download link for vvvvvvmp is broken
I Can’t Access it in 7zip “An attempt was made to move the file pointer at the beginning”
This … is … awesome!
Played through the game again tonight, and I got 2 achievements. Too tired and weak to do 10 seconds in the Super Gravitron tonight!!
Bought the new soundtrack just now and installed it to the game. I will play through flip mode in the Metal!
Thanks so much for improving my favourite game, and my favourite game music.
Forgot to mention, I played it in analogue mode this time, which makes veni vidi vici and the gravitron a little bit harder! veni vidi vici is still too hard for me, lol
Incorrect MIME-type on your Linux (possibly others, didn’t check) download.

People on reddit are complaining:-
https://pay.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/27yndm/vvvvvv_make_and_play_edition_out_now_for_linux/ci5ut51
Keep in mind, you’re going to need to use chmod to make the Linux file executable.
Open a terminal where you’ve downloaded the file (in many file managers, you can right click in the download directory and click “Open Terminal Here” or similar) and run these commands:
sudo chmod a x ./VVVVVV-MP-2.2-bin
sudo bash ./VVVVVV-MP-2.2-bin
Last I checked I hit 11th for super grav (paid)! I can’t believe that someone got over a minute – and it wasn’t Terry! Terry you literally let someone beat you at your own game!
You should also mention that VVVVVV for 3DS is on sale on Nintendo eShop, through 6/26. It’s a nicalis sale promoting 1001 spikes.
the windows version’s archive (VVVVVV-MP-2.2.zip)is corrupted
Just updated the make and play edition now!
Terry, just downloaded the new zip and it works for me. Thank you SO much for doing this. Loving the make and play edition and the fact that I can play VVVVVV on my phone!
MMMMMM is where it’s at. Potential for Anything forever.
For some reason the Android version is not appearing as a download in the Humble Bundle app. For Super Hexagon, when I bought it for PC, it also appeared in the Humble Bundle app for Android. Shouldn’t this also be the case here?
To open it on linux all you have to do is right clic on the file and make it an ejecutable file
The sound doesn’t seem to work for me, and pressing M crashes the game.
Nevermind, it works now. It was just the Stereo Mix on my computer
Minor bug: with the achievements: You can get the achievements for completing the time trials for each level regardless of the rank you get, but the in-game trophies require V ranks. Intended?
Long-time fan of VVVVVV, I own it on 3 different platforms now. Just finished it again on iOS. Still a totally fantastic experience. Have you ever considered making a sequel?
Hi, is it somehow possibke to update the ios-version wirh the mmmmmm-soundtrack? That would be totally awesome.
Hi!
i just (re)purchased VVVVVV for iOS and I am surprised how well it works 🙂 (thanks for one of my all time favorite games!)
BUT: why is this game so blurry? :/ This is a game that should look extremely crisp because of its style – but on iOS at least it looks like I have to play it through thick steam 🙁
The Android port of VVVVVVV is awesome, but it would be nice to be able to exit the game using the back button (in Super Hexagon it works that way), currently I have to exit the game using the home button, which is kinda ugly, because normally pressing the home button doesn’t quit the application but leaves it running in the background.
How do I play the Make and Play version on Windows 8? I can’t seem to get it to work and I don’t know why.
I’m running Windows 8 and the M&P version works just fine.
What is the problem you’re having?
Considering the introduction of VVVVVV Make and Play Edition, why don’t you add the link to the forum back?
i can’t get the windows version to even open. i click on VVVVVV.exe file but it gives me an error everytime. something im not doing? help pls
Yo Terry, I hope this is inspired by all the other DRoD games as well, or haven’t you played those yet? :p
Trying to load the awesome MMMMMM music replacement mod. The game v2.2 opens and run just fine but no change in music…
For fun I tried to run it from the terminal.
“Unable to open file mmmmmm.vvv”
Can someone MD5 their copy of mmmmmm.vvv and check it matches mine?
MD5 (mmmmmm.vvv) = 8309d06be0228708c5b47e54a3d8d01e
Are you placing it correctly? It should be placed in the VVVVVV document root, the directory where you have “levels” and “Saves”
