{"id":254,"date":"2008-09-08T23:01:07","date_gmt":"2008-09-08T23:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/distractionware.com\/blog\/?p=254"},"modified":"2008-11-05T22:47:03","modified_gmt":"2008-11-05T22:47:03","slug":"squish-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/distractionware.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/squish-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Squish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forums.tigsource.com\/index.php?topic=2822.0\">Squish<\/a> is my entry into <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.tigsource.com\/index.php?topic=2376.0\">TIGSource&#8217;s Bootleg Demakes contest<\/a>, a contest that asked participants to remake a modern game in a retro style. It&#8217;s conceptually inspired by the very underrated PSP puzzle game <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crush_(video_game)\">Crush<\/a>; rather than demake the game for a specific system, I demade the core mechanic in simpler terms. In <b>Crush<\/b>, the player can compress the 3D view of a level into a 2D view and transverse the level as if it was a 2D platformer. In <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.tigsource.com\/index.php?topic=2822.0\">Squish<\/a>, the player compresses 2D views into 1D!<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/distractionware.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/sept\/squish1.png\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I started out thinking of it as a joke entry &#8211; but the more I thought about it, the more convinced I got that there was potential for some really interesting puzzles here. So I figured I&#8217;d give it a shot &#8211; I wanted to make *something* for this contest after all, considering I <a href=\"https:\/\/distractionware.com\/blog\/?cat=31\">wasted a whole week<\/a> on a project that was just way too ambitious.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/distractionware.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/sept\/squish3.png\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s quite a lot I wanted to implement but didn&#8217;t have time to &#8211; I started it on Friday, finished the engine on Saturday and as a result designed almost all the levels in one day, on Sunday, so it&#8217;s pretty rushed and it&#8217;s still kinda buggy&#8230; All the same, I&#8217;m really pleased with how it came out!
