Title: Dimension Open/The Open Level Project v1.1
Post by: ToasterApocalypse on May 03, 2013, 03:48:32 PM
Yeah, that's right. tOLP. Dimension Open. After 4 and a half months, IT. IS. HERE! So, just incase you don't know, here's how the idea for tOLP originated. Me, Dav and Doormat were in the drawing room. Then, I came up with the idea for tOLP. Unlike most other open source levels, tOLP has materialized, and has formed this level! In it, Viridian enters a new dimension, and meets new friends, and some old ones!

What's the idea of tOLP? A level that everyone makes?

That sounds suspiciously like a thread I saw a while back on here...no idea what it was...I've been a lurker for a while, heh. It wasn't tOLP though

Anyway I'll test.

Hmmm... I said when the project began that I wouldn't really be much help in making the level, and specifically said I'd probably be a better level tester. And now the time has come for testing...
And I have finals next week. :violet:
I think I can work around it a bit. However, there is likely no chance I'll be able to really put much time into this until Monday evening or Tuesday, and even then I have two tests during the rest of the week. So I think I can help if you still need level testers by then, but I'll be working around both test prep and preparing to move out of my dorm completely. So you might have found the worst time to ask me this, but I'll see what I can do. Just PM the link if I'm accepted.

That's what tOLP is, a level made by a select few people who applied back in FEBUARY when the first ever tOLP thread was made.

Well, if it helps, I have four tests next week. The first one, Monday morning, should be easy. The one I have Monday evening is the hardest, and I have to do a lot of work between now and then to prepare. Once it's done, I should have a bit more open time. The third test is Wednesday morning-afternoonish, and should be rather tricky, but not extremely so, and I still need to get a solid A on it if I want the same for the semester grade. The last test, though fairly easy, is early Friday morning, after which I'll spend the day moving out. Tuesday, Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday I may have time or not depending on how I end up preparing for those last two tests. (This is East Coast USA, so this message is posted at 5:28 PM my time.)
Tell you what, send me the level, and if I don't have time to do anything with it you can take me out of the testing credits. If I do have time I'll try to message you some of my thoughts on things, so if you don't hear from me assume I didn't have time. Is that reasonable? ???

>_> I really, really don't mean to be so wordy. I just have this thing where I feel that the less I say, the more people misinterpret what I mean, even if it's really obvious what I'm trying to say. And I really don't like being misunderstood. I can try to hold back on that if you want, it's just how I think things through when I post stuff. :-X

OK, big tests are done, and I am happy to say that I should be more than capable of testing this level. I found enough time to put stuff off when I had a lot more to do. Now I should be able to squeeze some VVVVVV into my schedule. Count me in, if you don't already have enough testers. I'm happy to help in any way I can! :viridian:

I really does seem like an extremely big level. It was already mentioned that it's 20x20, and, if I counted the empty rooms correctly, it has at least 398 rooms!! Nearly (and perhaps really) 400!! This is most likely the biggest level ever (or has other 20x20 level got more?).
I'll play this after I finish D. 333333, if the stable version is already out by then (I don't like playing betas...). I'll comment even when I haven't played everything! I'll just warn that, for several reasons, I might finish this level months from now. :P

I actually made that easier; it used to have 5 elevator shafts next to each other instead of 3, and when you teleport to the room after that, you would have to react quickly. If you didn't, you would have to do everything again.

If you were playing with invincibility: yes, you WILL get stuck there.

Just some kind of warning - You refused to do the hardest trinkets in my level for them being too hard. While I was the designer of those challenges, and that might make me find them easier -- some parts in TOLP, I found harder than in that part.

Just saying! Good luck!

This....is good to know.  Keep in mind, a level can still be filled with lots even if without 100% completion.  I've played many games in my time that I didn't get every nook and cranny but still love.  That being said, I'll attempt it.  I'll weep.  I'll whimper.  You'll laugh.

After ≈56 mins and 530 deaths I have completed the Space Station, got the yellow keycard and collected 7 trinkets.

  • The hardest room so far is most likely the spike-stairway yellow unnamed room in the Open Space (or whatever it's called). It's very hard compared to the other rooms in that area. You should make it easier.
  • There are differences between the keycard scanner terminals. Some, like the diamond one, say "Searching for (DIAMOND) keycard..." (or something like that), while others say "Searching for keycard...". I think some don't have a blank line in the middle of the text box, but I don't remember that well... you should make them all equal.
  • I see you used the terminal teleport system from Back to VVVVVV, adding the red text box with the destination. :)
  • You should maybe put instructions in the teleport system... it's not like everyone that will play this level has played Back to VVVVVV. :P
  • Besides the following (which isn't important), no glitches, so far! :)
  • I think there were some collision errors if you flip in "Tow Places at Once". It doesn't really matter, though, they're not so notcieable. Changing the height of the floor might chnage the room too much.
  • I'm amazed that a level with nearly 400 rooms only has 17 trinkets! :o I've heard of a 5x5 level with 20 trinkets! Adding more now is too late, I guess...

Where the heck is the emerald gate? I can't find it anywhere.  :victoria:
Also, once the teleporters become inactive, you can get stuck in any zone, especially the ruby zone.

Have you tried taking the path below the red gate yet?

Anyway, tOLP 1.1 has been released! This fixes a number of issues:

Changelog for 1.1:

Fixed a bug where all teleporters would become inactive.
The explosion script no longer repeats.
The end script is now guaranteed to work.
Changed some other small things in the end script.
Added some minor things.
Fixed a bug where you could get stuck in Test Of Platforms.
Fixed warp lines in Ribbon Chess
Fixed a tiling error in Ribbon Chess and Lost Code
Fixed a small text box alignment error.

Download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/6646hejzoxi9c67/open_1.1.vvvvvv

I can't update the first post here though...

If the teleporters are inactive (I found out why) and if you can't update, try touching the big round teleporter. It may fix the bug. Also after updating, you should go into the green area for a few rooms (you don't have to go all the way to the teleporter, just to the room before it, and then back) fixes the problem if you have it from 1.0 or 1.0.1. The bug won't activate at all when you play the level from the beginning in 1.1.

Continued, didn't finish yet, still with v1.0.1.
Time: ≈1h48m. Deaths: ≈930 Trinkets: 10/17.
Currently in the polar dimension, at the room "Spike Switch", or whatever it's called (didn't try that room yet, just reached it).

  • That yellow room I mentioned earlier is still the hardest so far. Was it supposed to be so hard?
  • I forgot to tell you this the last time, but I thought I needed to do more "swimming in oil" in the apparently empty room before the trinket, took me a bit to realise there was only one way there...
  • I forgot to tell you this the last time too, but I think that those instructions I mentioned need to explain what terminal KE is... that it's not a destination select terminal like the others...
  • I don't see the difficulty of the trinket in "More art"...
  • "Ribbon Chess" is the 2nd hardest room, I think. Sometimes I couldn't jump enough even if falling a bit and then flipping! Was I supposed to to the room above when flipping in the top right? I suppose so... the flip at the start is 5 tiles left and 5 tiles up, that one is 5 tiles left and 4 tiles up. The first one is already hard, that one should be impossible. So, you somehow used Dir. Mode. to make just part of the hole to be the warp line and to make some tiles act like one-way-down tiles (or something like that). Original, if that was intended! One problem, if you go to the left or right edges of the room above, you get collision errors...so was it intended to go up there or not?! Or were those collision errors the ones fixed in 1.1. I suspect there were some in "Ribbon Chess" itself, but I didn't test those...
  • In "Hyperactive square", I collected the trinkat and then died w/o touching the CP! I think you should fix that...
  • The 1st part of the prison is very original! A suggestion: is it possible to make :viridian: teleport to a spike, hiding it by a longer flash(x), so that it's really a death? And I get why the cops were like :vermillion: : "Officer Vermilion". I guess that makes sense...
  • ...Backgrounds in the prison like the ones that wrap around every side when the room actually doesn't... file editing, right? That makes me wonder if the rooms that wrap around and have the lab background (I forgot the keycard collected after that) required file editing too, or just have warp lines...
  • The destabilized ruby zone is original too!... and so is the zone that starts at (14;1). What gotoroom can do... I admit the last was a bit confusing I just went forward, backward, forward, until I reached "True Polar". Same with the room "Lost".
  • In "True Polar": "Teleporter version: 6.9"... ... ... Who made that line? :D
  • In one of the rooms in the Polar dimension (one that's split int various columns and has lots of grav. lines and enemies): Move the 1st CP to the left. Right now it makes the 1st garv. line useless as you don't nneed to flip: you can just touch it. A similar thing happens in other CP of the same room, but that's unfixable. In the same room there's another useless grav. line, it's the last one. You can just flip directly to the exit... or is it to prevent wrapping?

Very good, so far...

Toaster, I think you should remove the map in the OP, it's too spoiler-ish...

After beating that deep space zone, you can still use the keycard to kill the warptokens. Go in and look at the teleporter.
Guess what? YOU CAN TOUCH IT!  :victoria:
I've heard it can destroy savefiles, so i had to clear my data to be safe. If it is not an error and you worked around it, that's good. If not, please fix.

We're going to have to make that script say "Game NOT saved" then, because the teleporter is actually activated by a script (then it's safe to touch). If that script wouldn't be there, THEN your saves would be destroyed, so your saves were fine. If they weren't, you would have noticed it. You would end up somewhere weird in Dimension VVVVVV.

I'm in the destabilized Polar Dimension. I forgot the room where I stopped, but I've passed "River V" and "Choose your Poison" (and no, didn't update).
Time: around 2h30min; deaths: 1363; trinkets: 12/17

  • Is there any way to make the "Respect you Elders" trinket harder without changing the speed of the platforms? It seems too easy, the next room itself is harder. Anyway, I liked the change of platform speeds both in those rooms and in "Platform of Doom", later when the dimension is destabilized. :)
  • There's one room in the still stable dimension that's either random or with a pattern that's hard to see. I tried to think of the pattern, but in the end, I passed by luck. I forgot the roomname... "Shattered Cavern" or something...
  • I never saw the gravity-line-disappearing-platform trick anywhere. :)
  • The hint in the roomname in the room "Answer is (...)" is original too, I think. I ended up thinking about the last part myself without the hint, though.

No more comments... still very good...

Platform speeds can be changed with platv in the level file just like tilecol, enemy speeds can only be changed if you create them as entities.

Don't set platv to something higher than 9 though, or it will glitch.

The enemies in Varying Velocity were created with internal commands. Although you can't change their appearance from the crates, you can change their direction and speed.

After ≈3 hours, I'm in the zone where I switch between Viridian and Valso, immediately after Viridian destroying the warp token.

  • In the room "Going Down" (destabilized P.Dim.), there is floor hidden in the roomname. There was another room that had the same, but I forgot which (this one isn't necessarily in the dest. P. Dim.).
  • It seems that if a conveyor is one tile higher than a floor and there's a three tile wide horizontal gap between them, Viridian can go directly from the conveyor to the floor if the conveyor is pointing to the floor. There was a room with lots of conveyors in which this happened... I have to start memorizing roomnames... I've also seen Viridian pass two tile wide gaps with the conveyors and floor at the same height (in other levels).
  • This one is more important: When Valso and Viridian split paths, Viridian's speech is below Valso! It's still cyan, though. It's most likely related to him being the player. Do not that I'm still using 1.0.1,, but according to 1.1's changelog, it seems it wasn't fixed...
  • The first time I went to the room where Valso thought Viridian died, I went back before I activated the script. While that made me get a trinket nearby ( :D), I think the script should be more to the right...

Still very good...

Could you PM me your save (open 1.0[.1].vvvvvv.vvv) so I can correct Viridian's position to be back on track? The glitch was fixed in 1.1, and it's also highly recommended to upgrade to 1.1 because otherwise you may not be able to see the ending...

I have already gotten back to that location, so it's not really an issue, I just have to be careful is all.  I don't save until I finish an episode, so I just backtracked back there.  If it continues to be issues, then I'll worry about it, otherwise I think it's a 1 time fluke.

Time: around 3:30h. Deaths: 1679 (okay, I admit I'm not sure). Trinkets: 14/17
Currently in the (spoiler) test of wrapping.

  • How about making  :viridian: automatically activate the terminal after the cutscene that's after the place where :viridian: and Valso split up? In the current way, you can exit the teleporter room through the emergency exit. When you activate the terminal later, Valso won't be there and he will appear immediately after you close the exit.
  • The first room of the zone that requires the Diamond Keycard has a floor hidden in the roomname! Surely that wasn't made on purpose... right?
  • I have to admit that I reached the test of platforms once before the hidden checkpoints were activated. I didn't expect that to happen, but then again, that was the intention...
  • After beating the test of wrapping and having the invisible CPs activated, I somehow died immediately after I warped to the next room and I spawned... with the music still being "Pushing Onwards"! How did that happen?
  • The repeating sound in the end of the Damond Keycard's zone was obviously original (at least to my knowlegde). And I didn't expect Viridian to have met a Yes Man...

Still great...

Also, I still used v.1.0.1. But I changed my mind about updating or not, remembering that most changes are bug fixes. I'll play the newest version from now on (in the next time I play, 1.1.2, unless another update is released in the meantime).

EDIT: Forgot to mention something.

I've completed the level with 14/17 trinkets and somehow saw the ending with v.1.0.1. However, I needed to update to 1.1.2 to get back to the dimension because TB wasn't working. I visited the Lab, Warp Zone, the prison and the Space Station without finding any trinkets... not to mention finding various glitches! In all areas I visited besides the Lab, I saw the crewamtes again, not to mention a dialog repetition at the end of the Warp Zone, or cutsene bars if you enter from the end. Will this be fixed?
After that, I went to the Emerald zone. Valso was stilll there, and when the terminal was activated, it happened as if it was the first time I activated it. Result: I was teleported to 14,1. I completed that area, going to the Polar Dimension again. Being sick of repeating areas, I gave up.
Final Results: Time: ≈4h30min. Deaths: nearly 2000. Trinkets: 14/17.

Rating:
Originality: 10/10 :vitellary:
Difficulty Balance: 7/10 :verdigris: Note: You get a high rating for having medium difficulty and a low score for being too hard/easy.
Story/Roomnames: 9/10 :viridian:
Visual Design: 8/10 :viridian:
Glitch Amount: 7/10 :verdigris:
Level structure: 8/10 :viridian:
Total rating: 17 :shiny: /20

This got the same result as "Dimension Funland" by Flushex due to being original. I still think "Dimension 333333" by Sendy is better...

I think having warplines does the trick. They should be in a position where you can't reach though, or where warping is intended.

I can't place both types of warps in 2.1.  :victoria:

I'm pretty sure you have to:

  • Make sure the room isn't wrapping
  • Place warp lines
  • Exit VVVVVV
  • External edit your level (open it with a text editor)
  • Find your room
  • Set wrapping to the right kind
  • Done!
That's not necessary.
1. Place warp lines at where you want.
2. Make a checkpoint in the room and press 'enter'
3. Now exit testing.
4. Place warp direction as you like.
5. Done!

Worth noting that this thread only has version 1.1, and the latest version is 1.1.3, so if there's anyone here wanting to download it go to tolp2.nl instead.

Why not upload the newest version here? Anyone browsing casually won't bother going to tolp.

I don't own the OP so I can't do it myself, but I just sent a PM to ToasterApocalypse.

And the forum didn't stop you from doing that? Because he's banned from Distractionware.

I'd PMed his tOLP2 account because his Dware account is banned. And I just now realized there's a massive logical fallacy here. Mornings are hard.

he got banned for making a masterpiece of a level that deserved a 100% from the vultarix rating service
it was only one room long but it was such a masterpiece that i made an entire forum for it and plugged it all over dware

"Vultarix rating service"
you mean the pointless rating service that makes no sense whatsoever and barely even gives information on any glitches, good sides or bad sides, AND gives unfit ratings?
