Title: What not to put in your VVVVVV Level
Post by: VeeC7 on August 22, 2015, 09:44:18 AM
To avoid a blatant level, I'm showing you what not to put in the level,

1: Areas causing players to go off bounds
2: Copying (which I did)
3: Skippable Rooms
4: Floating Spikes
5: Polar Dimension, but the map does not show "NO SIGNAL"
6: Impossible Rooms
7: Intersection with disappearing platforms
8: Copied scripts
9: Improper design

Can I also post some?

10: Single Tiled Walls (I know that ShinyWolf really hates these)
11: Misaligned Rooms
12: Repeating Scripts
13: Scripts that crash the game
14: Internal Scripting with cutscene bars or terminal squeaks when it's not supposed to have it
15: Scripts that behave strangely

16: Roomnames without Capitalization (spikes everywhere, attack of the enemies, etc.)
17: Mispelling words (spikkes evrywhere, atack of the enmies, etc.)
18: Mispelling names (Vermillion, Verdiegris, Veridian, etc.)

21. Nearly impossible rooms.

Yeah, i know the OP featured Impossible Rooms, but you can't just make a super hard room. Except everyone makes super hard rooms.

22. Extreme backtracking

22a. But backtracking in small amounts is OK.
There are two big ways to do backtracking well.

The first is if backtracking through a level is effectively a totally different challenge due to the layout Super Meat Boy does this a lot.

The other way is Metroidvania-style "Look what I can do NOW" type of thing. This isn't as effective in VVVVVV, however, because the only real method of doing this is with keycards.

24. Filler.
A lot of people feel the need to fill up the entire map basically so they can say they did. This can easily end up bogging the level down. Even the official game is guilty of this to some extent, with those big overworld caves.

Oh well, my later intermissions were quite good..

27. Floating checkpoints.  I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this yet.  However, there is a little-known exploit, involving editing the level with a text editor, which produces a weird box-shaped checkpoint that spawns :viridian: in a direction determined by the previous normal checkpoint the player touched.  Use with caution, as saving and re-loading at such a checkpoint crashes the game.

These originally appeared in Dimension SIMPLE, but I decided to remove them in a patch because of the reload crashing thing.

38. Don't adversite in your level.
39. Don't make empty rooms with Nothing (even warping). Add a place with text like this:
This is actually the end.
Stay tuned for the next

40. Don't spam with commands.
41. Don't make boring levels.

42. Don't put instant spike traps where :viridian: (or any other character that's being controlled via internal scripting) dies as soon as he enters a room (unless it is made clear that there are spikes).

47. The 'custom length' warp lines you can make by editing a text file.
48. Box checkpoints.
49. Weird entity/ies
50. Bad music at wrong time. (Ex: Popular Potpourri in a Polar Dimension)

48. Box checkpoints.
I actually disagree with this one.  I know where you're coming from: starting at one of these in the editor crashes the game, as does loading a saved game at one.  But in practice, the chances of someone actually saving at one of these are quite low, especially if used in an area full of gravity lines and/or crumbling platforms.

Related:
51. Checkpoints on crumbling platforms.  You may have noticed that after respawning at one of these a few times, the platforms look like conveyors.  What's less well known is that if this process continues, it ultimately crashes the game.
52. Checkpoints on the crumbling single blocks available via Direct Mode.  I've never seen this done, and for good reason.  Unlike the regular crumbling platforms, these don't come back when :viridian: respawns.

70. Single-tile walls.
Referring to Bearboy's Zones (yah, I know it's an old level, but...), Viridian is continually walking on single-tile walls, which is pretty disturbing for me.
71. Warp-to-warp steps.
One warp is enough. Please do not set a warp destination to another warp token, that will lead you somewhere. VVVVVV is minimalist. Try to make things simpler.

I used a gamestate because I thought rescuing a crewmate would kill the mood.

If anyone asks me about it again I'll just say that the fact that the level is impossible to complete is actually some sort of deep symbolism.

When people care too much about checkpoints and complain too much about little checkpoints. Even then, there can't be a compromise of just designing the whole level and then adding checkpoints afterwards, because the level design will obstruct places where people want checkpoints.

120 Checkpoint starvation. Imagine The Warning at the top of the screen and a fucking Gravitron at the bottom. (I'm looking at you VVVVVV2.0 - although admittedly that was more for comedic effect)

121 Severe lack of ifflag//iftrinkets usage in script boxes so whenever you go back to that area for whatever reason you have to go through the same eight minute long dialog every. fucking. time.

122 Shittons of delay(twodigitnumber) in their dialog so even if you've been through it so many times you know it off by heart, you still have twenty seconds mandatory waiting time.*

123 Any combination of 119 - 122.

Quote from: Luigi master on February 29, 2016, 12:03:15 PM118 doesnt crash the game.
You're right—it doesn't crash, it freezes. Technical differences aside, I guess I need to give an explanation. Have a script box or a terminal calling script ! because people will complain if you name a script with punctuation in it. ! should have iftrinkets,0,@ with enough blank lines concatenated afterward, such that VVVVVV doesn't erase the iftrinkets line. Two or more should usually be enough. @ should have iftrinkets,0,! with the same requirements as script !. Play the level, then walk into the script box or activate the terminal. The game will then proceed to freeze.

The input of delay is in frames, and in VVVVVV, a frame is 1/30 of a second. Thus, delay,30 is one second. On a side note, originally I thought there were thirty ticks per second, but then I realized that you can still start moving and stop moving in less than 1/30 of a second.

I used to think it was 0.1s, like in Minecraft, since my computer was so crap (yes, even with VVVVVV) that it actually took that long. But it won't be a problem if there's something like
ifflag(10,stop)
iftrinkets(0,dialogscript)

because it'll only happen once.

A tick in Minecraft is not .1 seconds, but rather, .2 seconds, or one-twentieth of a second, leading to twenty ticks per second. You can even put the ifflag and iftrinkets in the same script if you get rid of cutscene bars.

A tick in Minecraft is not .1 seconds, but rather, .2 seconds, or one-twentieth of a second

Firstly, 0.2 = 1/5, not 1/20. 0.05 = 1/20.
Secondly, there are different types of ticks. There's the display update tick (which is literally just the frame rate), the block update tick (which is 1/20s) and the redstone tick (1/10s) which is the only one people usually talk about when referencing ticks since it's the only one that's really visible ingame.
Sorry bout that, probably should have specified.

Also I'm too much of a noob with internal scripting to put everything in one script and it doesn't really matter anyway. It's not like people are going to think "well this is a good level but has he optimized his scripts?"

Don't bump old topics, this is from 2013.

SomeUser's post is actually relevant and OtherUser's post is not. Usually a couple of posts about the bumping will follow after that (which is EXACTLY what we're doing right now) and that is extremely less useful than just continuing the topic of the thread.

However,

This also means that there's no such thing as a 32-day gap being a bump and a 29-day gap being not. A useful and relevant post after months or years is better than keyboard mashing after two hours.

Except most of us didn't just spam aaaaaaa and knowyourmeme links in threads. At worst we'd post memes and uncomfortably cringy content, but 5tr4 is going down the way of "no one other than me can spam or bump"
when someone acts critically out of line you have to call them out on their bullshit. A single ban didn't help 5tr4 much, so we gotta keep a strict eye on him and tell him whats wrong and what's good. It's not picking on 5tr4, we're trying to improve him so he stops spamming and commanding people/complaining. He's already told Dav several times to do what he wants.

The only thing i hate is when Luigi Master or Vultarix tell him to "not tell us what to do" i mean jeez, it's kinda disrespectful when you tell a moderator/admin what to do, but straight up making a suggestion isn't a bad thing, Luigi.

I imagine that you could reuse flags as long as it's impossible to go back to the area where the flag is first used.  Of course, it's still sloppy architecture and you should only really do this if you are literally running out of flags.

What we've done for tOLP1 and tOLP2 is to define flags 90-99 as temporary flags, which can be used for anything as long as you turn them back off again. If you do it even better then this can make flag use very efficient; use flags 90-99 for each cutscene in an area, and when you complete that area, mark all the cutscenes as completed at once with one master flag for that entire area.

But if you don't know which flag you're using (https://tolp2.nl/forum/index.php?topic=19.0) then yes, there is a problem.

The problem is that there's not really much you can do with the Gravitron; it's kind of a dead end, creatively.  Basically, if you've seen one, you've seen them all.  Keep in mind, however, that this list is not and will never be fully concrete.  Basically, if you have a wonderful idea for the Gravitron that no one's done before, just make it; don't hold back because it was on this list.

140. Warp line "mazes". I'm talking about those huge rooms with like 50 exits and only one doesn't have a warp line on it. 148 / Single-tile floor and walls It's often covered with the roomname, and if all the walls of a room are just a single-tile border is pretty disturbing (imo)
149 / Roomtext Well, I'm no more angry with that Space Station thing with Shiny, but I still hate roomtext. (Except for som1sezhi's 100 Challenges and his comments, nicely put on the top of the screen where you don't actually have to see.)
150 / VVV tunnel length Okay, now someone will surely kill me with a nuclear bomb, but I like veni-vidi-vici tunnels. When they're short. I mean, 3 rooms are enough (Notch's VVVV 4K), maybe 4. It's pretty annoying and difficult to pass across 10 damn rooms of spiky tunnels. Actually, I'll put a 150.b point, that's more general: Trinket challenges length. Including my inVerse Reckless Challenge.

* enemy setups that rely on you moving perfectly underneath/similar with light taps on movement buttons

160. Enemies crossing the screen edge, when using warp lines together with a warp background.  This is actually supposed to be impossible, so it shouldn't really come as a surprise that it can trigger some strange glitches.  Specifically, an enemy can appear to disappear off the screen, but if the player crosses (and thus triggers) a warp line while this is happening, the enemy teleports to where it "should" be, potentially causing IWBTG-esque frustration.

I actually disagree with this one.  I know where you're coming from: starting at one of these in the editor crashes the game, as does loading a saved game at one.  But in practice, the chances of someone actually saving at one of these are quite low, especially if used in an area full of gravity lines and/or crumbling platforms.

this depends on if you're using map (make and play) or not. finalmode in map doesn't teleport you to outside dimension vvvvvv because that's been removed in map.

as well, using finalmode in either version doesn't put you into a softlock - custom level saves can't store finalmode, so saveloading will return the level back to normal just fine. (rooms containing platforms or conveyors (which are a type of platform) outside dimension vvvvvv will crash the game, however)

depends on what you mean by "free-fall"

your x and y speed have to be within a certain, small threshold to be able to activate terminals

in the case of my "annoying terminal" level, the 1 frame you can activate the terminal has viridian on the hyperspeed platform as well

Okay, just pulled it off successfully.  Even so, it would indeed be annoying to come across that challenge in a normal level, so:

171 : Using more checkpoints than actually needed.
It's generally subtle, but once in a while you'll notice an over-abundance of these objects in pointless places, it's pretty funny when you notice it (And I'm talking about checkpoints found during linear gameplay, because the overworld ones's function is a bit different). Most of the time after overcoming section n°1, you'll see checkpoint n°1 at the end of it (or in some breaker-type of room), and then checkpoint n°2 shows-up, right before section n°2 in a following room ! Be smart about their placements; The less oversights, the better level.

172 : Making us wait for absolutely, LITERALLY no reason.
Note that I am not complaining about dialogue cutscenes, those have a reason to exist compared to the ones I'll complain about...
I'm really, reeeeeeally sick of having to wait seconds worth of time for moving platforms to backtrack, ennemies to move out of the way... solely so I can proceed forward. I want to play the game, move Viridian around, press buttons on my keyboard, so please build rooms in such a way that I never stop doing that, that the game's fluidity never stops at any point. This is mandatory even to the tiniest gameplay portion you're ever going to build (Although it's more relevant to levels based on gameplay). And this improves future replayability so, so much.
For that, there are tricks such as making us leave and re-enter the incriminated room (Doing a "reset"), by putting a checkpoint in the previous one; using room warping to make moving platforms reach the player sooner, use warp-tokens or gotorooms scripts... whatever you choose, be effective.
Every single custom on the planet has it to some degree (The best ones are not excluded, though the lesser ones tend to have it systematically), so be very wary of this issue. Players will be grateful, me the first, even if they don't realise it.

173 : Bad overworld building.
The overworld does not only consist of fancy-looking areas, or memorable environments, it's also about good mobility. A bad example with this picture :
Viridian comes from the right, and the way to go is on the left, however in order to reach it I need to flip twice. Well, the closest ceiling from me is exactly 3 rooms above. So you tell me that to simply get past that 1-block higher ground, I need to wait around 5 freaking seconds of nothingness ? Putting a ceiling close to the ground (Along with backing to look good) which functions as an extra path you can take would have been so much better, quicker, and less boring...
And you may laugh at that example, but I see stuff like that frequently, sometimes even worse.
To test if your overworld is convenient to wave through, assuming you roughly know its overall layout (Because this becomes a problem only when the player have already explored the zone once, and needs to go through it again. This matters the most in level types such as Dimension Open where you constantly need to go somewhere else through the overworld after clearing a section, but every levels needs it in at some degree): Go through it a bunch of times (Or ask help from playtesters) from point A to B of which you'll decide, and if there's anything you can think of, that would add to make travelling faster, then add it right away (If, of course, it doesn't ruin with any other aspects of the level). Take a few notes from VVVVVV main game's overworld.

Also, when you have a big overworld, especially full of empty rooms (The ones Viridian enters and leaves in less than a second), please fill them with something, at least some random lone backing tile ! It reinforces the fact that you are inbounds in the actual level, and that you have exploration and memorization of the layouts for future reference, waiting to be done. Doing otherwise would make it looks like you've somehow gone out-of-boundaries (or in outer space for that matter) which is way less pleasant and motivating. Who would want to explore an overworld that's completely empty and with unnatural-looking structures (Perfect 90° corners, horizontal/vertical bars) all over the place ?!

why is this a problem? as long it doesn't look like 'the warning' i don't have a problem with it. it's better to use more than needed than to use less than needed.

this is why i always disable screen effects if it's not a level i'm working on or it's a level that i know having screen effects on won't be detrimental (abuse of flash is still bad)

I agree that it really isn't as important as some of the other rules out there, but personally it would be harder to take some random level seriously if it had this issue and if I noticed it.

having tons of checkpoints instills a feeling of safety and that you won't have to redo entire paths again (they dont even have to be challenges, they can just be long)

Ah; so in the end that rule end-up being mostly subjective because I personally don't get scared by a lack of checkpoints very often, enough for it to be something I'm not caring about. Fine, you can disregard it

174. Have a room-like area that you cannot escape (there's no scripting inside that room or something) with a checkpoint inside the roomcage, causing a partial of a partial-softlock* (you can move around but cannot progress the map in any way except for exiting. But if you for some reason decided to save at that cage, then you're doomed and forced to restart the level.).

There's also a lot of such rooms in Pixelator's recent The Cuest.  That level is so barbarically difficult that invincibility is almost required to experience the (actually quite interesting) story.

You said it yourself that it can be used right.
It's not really broken, and it can be used for troll levels and I think even more.

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM183. swearing in a level (seriously, dont you think 3-year olds cant steal their moms phone and look at VVVVVV and dware?)
V6 is a old game enough that I don't think most kids will learn about. If you find out about V6, then you're more likely at least older than a teenager, with knowledge and of these swear words.
I don't think the V6 building scene is also full of swearing levels, so even if a child were to play them, they probably wouldn't be disturbed. Even then, I'm not sure it's our direct concern. Why is the child here to begin with if it's assumed they shouldn't consume that content.
And finally, swear words can be made for plenty of purposes, such as designing characters. For comedic effect or troll levels.
If you really hate swear words, then you should definitely not play Atmosfear.

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM184. 10x10-20x20 levels where only 5 of them are actually levels
I'm not sure what this means. What means "levels" ? Levels that fill every room with something ?
Level that actually play like levels ? But what's your definition of that ?
Anyways, there are billions of fully 10x10 and 20x20 levels out there.
And even then, it's handy to have bigger bounds, in the sense that it's easier to build levels with since you have more space to work with.

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM185. the entire level being an overworld
I'm sure there is some very cool stuff you could make with that. Even if you make a overworld devoid of any challenge.
Now if you mean a completely empty and bland overworld, a point can be made. But it all depends on the maker's design. If it's made intentional, then it's for a reason, so it's definitely justified to add in your level because of that reason. The same logic can be applied to every single points of this thread (that are on-topic).

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM186. the entire level having only a few blocks (can be done right)
So like three blocks in one room and that's it ? Seems like a troll level done right.

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM187. rooms with only spikes (can be done right as well)
Similar thing, it may not look be pretty but it can be used in troll content. Also if you have different textures, maybe it won't even look bad !

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM188. loud music
Mostly for troll content I think.
I've actually never seen a level have loud music.

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM189. invisible graphics
Can be used for troll, but also to design actual gameplay segments (if you do it properly !)

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM190. glitched graphics
Not sure what this means. Like, intentionally corrupted looking graphics ?
Since I used the word intentional, thne it means that there was a reason to have it that way in the level, it's justified.
There are a bunch of levels (mostly made by one dude I think) who uses direct mode and a lot of blocks to create corrupted looking rooms. And it's nice.

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM191. custom minimap with an offset
I have never seen a custom minimap have an offset personally. This would seem like a really hard minimap mistake to make. But even then, one could do so intentionally.

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM192. minimap with text (can be done right)
What are you talking about ? This would be so cool !

Quote from: theamazingwaffle on January 31, 2023, 07:04:32 PM193. trying to make it so viridian doesnt die when she touches enemies
Well, you don't die when you have invincible mode.
I will thoroughly disagree, because there is a way to have enemies switch between harmless and deadly states. And who knows what sort of gameplay you can have with these.
And if it's just inoffensive all of the time (which I've also never seen before), again, it would depend on what you do with them. Troll, story, even gameplay.
I think it would be cool.

I now understand the first one, but I would still say that it can be fine if used intentionally.
Quicksand are not just one texture, but many different ones in a split second. I have never seen a quicksand texture take completely unrelated textures every frame, it sounds cool and I'd argue that is a great thing for making a glitched looking level.

For your second one, I understand as well. When the level is 10x10 and you want to go to level editor, it can be very annoying to have to move room by room before finally reaching the part you want to play or see.
It's possible people forget about resizing the bounds of your level. But by experience, I'd say it's relatively rare that you can do this, as generally 10x10 or 20x20 levels tend to reach the edges of the map, so it wouldn't be possible to resize it without moving entire rooms around or worse.

Reading it seriously again, I realize the name of this very thread has a huge issue.
It says "What not to put in your VVVVVV Level". But it uses the word "put" which is an intentional action the level maker consciously makes.
If it is an intentional action, then there is no justification for telling these people otherwise. They will always be right for doing it because that's just part of the design they envision.
Unless, eventually, if it's about straight illegal content, offensive and taboo words, very controversial people and concepts. And maybe some rampage level stealing.

I believe the name of this thread could have been renamed to something like "common level making mistakes custom makers may unconsciously do", while still adding a disclaimer in the opening post, that any of these supposed mistakes can be fine if you intentionally use them.
Or else that, you may know their existence, but not care too much, because the state of the level is good enough in your eyes. Much like living in a room in disorder, the shape of the level is up to you to decide, even if it may look or play messy for others.
Now, if you still want people to play it, or don't mind dropping your level for others to play, a disclaimer could be handy to add, so players may know if this will be for them or not.

That thread could include stuff like building oversights (especially backing), releasing a unplaytested level, dialogue boxes that annoyingly retrigger, enemy/platform cycles at the start of a room that cause you to have to wait and do nothing for seconds before every attempts. And, your 10x10/20x20 thing.

Some of these things are definitely not important. But other may hinder the experience of the level if not taken into account.
Which, in the end, would be the point of the thread : bringing awareness to certain aspects of custom levels, so that a then-enlightened level maker would be able to make more decisions about the design of their level.

Maybe, a general thread about level making ideas and awareness would be the best. Because the alternative, just making a list of mistakes that are more often guilty of being subjective, is pretty pointless if not actually harmful to creativity.

I guess, in other words, game design.
'cept that everything's free, so there are no expectation of "quality" against anyone.
