VVVVVV / Re: Redeem VVVVVV purchases on Steam

I also bought VVVVVV the day it came out. I would really like to be able to register it on Steam for convenience.

Is this possible, Terry? I know you can register some brick and mortar store -bought games on Steam so there must be a mechanism for it.

I like optimizing. As pointless as it may be.

Man, the first person to actually do this had better have a camera rolling when it happens.  Most impressive youtube video ever.
Oh, I will. ;-)

Right now I'm able to complete Space Station 1, The Laboratory and The Tower with 0 deaths 100% of the time. Space Station 2, The Warp Zone and Final Challenge maybe 1/3 of the time. The first intermission is pretty easy to complete without deaths, but I'm completely stumped on Gravitron.

However, although I can pretty much nail the Time Trials individually, doing them all in a row requires extraordinary amounts of concentration. Not to mention trying to avoid the giddyness that starts to build up when you reach the latter stages.. That's my main enemy right now :)

It's definitely doable though. I'm sure I could pull off a <10 death run through the game now, although I haven't tried.

Yup.

Thinking inside the box is my specialty. Forced scrolls can work to your advantage as well as disadvantage. ;-)

I don't think it's physically feasible to get faster than 1:32 on the Tower, is it?

Physics? You humans, you think in such small minded ways. ;-)

I think shaving another second or two off is possible, if you really optimize it. But rank V is out of reach, alas. (hint!)

Arrow keys the "normal" way (hit up to jump upwards, down to jump down).

I find that Flash 10.1 beta gives me slippery controls in the demo and the beta. (Also, Hedgehog Launch 2 on Armor Games is totally unplayable on that version - the controls stick for seconds making it impossible to control.)

Downgrading back to Flash 10.0 fixes these problems.

The standalone version of VVVVVV works fine on my computer, though. (I guess because it's built with Flash 10.0 or earlier.)

The game is extremely famous (although cannot claim to be a household name like Mario) and found on many platforms. I played it on Snes the first time though it made its debut in the arcade halls. There was no C64 version to my knowledge. There WAS however a (bad) movie made for it. (That last hint should narrow it down quite a bit)

Google "gamename c64" and you'll see that there, in fact, was a C64 version of it. :-)

In Laboratory, there's a teleporter mid-stage and a narrow passageway at the top left corner of the screen. There's a trinket at the end of a very cramped and irregular maze. The maze reminded me of the Gnomish Mines in Nethack. Am I correct?

Now someone should stand on the block with the flip play mode enabled. =D
Woowoo!  Gotta relearn Doing Things the Hard Way backwards.

That was surprisingly hard. Although the keypresses are exactly the same (because left-right isn't flipped), the flip mode totally threw off my timing and I practically had to relearn it.

Damn those controls are twitchy! And I much prefer up/down for flipping than a singular action button.. (yes I do realize the arrow keys flip the gravity regardless of what way it is currently, it's just much easier in terms of committing sequences of actions to muscle memory)

I see you kind of had the idea for Doing it the Hard Way there with Driller, Nearly There and The Ground Floor, but made the latter three a little easier in the beta (no spikes at the bottom, which is a little more forgiving).

BTW, I managed to perch myself on one of those spiky blocks in The Ground Floor without dying ;-)

P.S. Deliverance and Driller ;-)
