VVVVVV Levels / The Unexpected Adventure
April 01, 2016, 06:56:52 AM
After not having made a VVVVVV level for years, I wanted to finally make a serious level again. I've done pretty much all of the work in Ved, which also gave me some ideas for Ved features, and made me discover some bugs in Ved.

In this level, Viridian is about to go exploring with Vermilion, but something doesn't go according to plan...

This level also features room animation!

VVVVVV Levels / The intentionally bad levels thread
October 25, 2014, 02:19:22 AM
Originally I had posted this in this thread, but I didn't want to hijack someone else's level thread (even though it's not a regular level), so I guess this is better off as a separate topic where people can post levels intentionally designed to be bad.

Half a month ago I posted my attempt at making a terrific level on spectrum forums:

Features:
- A map designed by someone who knows how to use internal scripting well but who didn't use that at all in the level
- Map with 20 trinkets - that must mean it's a map good for hours of fun!
- I couldn't decide which song to use, so I just made it alternate between two every once in a while.
- For the deaf, there's textual feedback telling you when the music changes.
- Increasing annoyingn-- difficulty
- Incoherent and sometimes incomprehensible dialogue
- Hints in the background where necessary and unnecessary
- Occasional checkpoints so you can retry after you die, at well-chosen locations
- A surprise when you complete the level
- Perhaps some other stuff I forgot to mention here

Have fun :vermillion:

VVVVVV / Invincibility speedruns
May 01, 2013, 02:59:11 PM
Some people may be against using invincibility mode, but have you ever tried speedrunning VVVVVV with invincibility mode on?

Try to beat my record!

Please note that this may get you a few trophies for winning with less than X deaths, and it's recommended to do this only if you've already completed the game!

Also, Intermission 1 may mess up the run a bit, but it doesn't matter if you have to press R a few times because your companion got stuck, only the time matters :viridian:

VVVVVV Tech Support / Invincibility bug
December 31, 2012, 11:30:41 AM
I don't know if this was mentioned before, but don't enable invincibility in the 3DS version of VVVVVV. Unless you want to be invincible forever. Now I have to disable it every time I start VVVVVV. :( Is there any way to permanently disable it without losing data?

Super Hexagon / Game doesn't update?
December 02, 2012, 07:18:23 PM
I read on Terry's Twitter that he updated the game so you can use the up arrow to restart, and so the leaderboards go up to 500 instead of 100, but my game still isn't updated for that. Was the update Windows-only, or am I doing something wrong? I got the first two or three updates, so I think that's not the problem.

Super Hexagon / Bugs
November 28, 2012, 08:24:27 PM
Collect bugs in this topic!

  • If you get a high score in arcade mode, the score is also sent to the leaderboard
  • If you get a high score in arcade mode, and if you press esc before entering your name, you go back to the stage select screen. You can then choose any stage, and instead of starting the game, you can continue entering your name (whether it's another stage or not). You can even disable arcade mode, start a normal game, enable arcade mode again, and you will still go to the screen where you can enter your name. At least your score will always be saved to the right level, and it will not be sent to the wrong leaderboard (otherwise, it would be a serious bug, enabling people to get a very high score in Hexagon and sending it to the global leaderboard of Hyper Hexagonest :vermillion:).
  • In the leaderboards, some names have characters which show up as , because they are not in the font
  • Rarely, the game will think you're holding a key, while you're not (I think that happened? Btw, it also happens in the iOS version)
  • If you press esc upon dying, the voice won't say 'game over', you just go to the menu (maybe it also doesn't save your score then?)
  • You can also press tab to go to the leaderboards in weird places, like the credits (this may be a feature, but I'm not sure)

I made something new: a handy program which reads the script of a .vvvvvv level and outputs the script to a text file, in which commands on different lines aren't separated by '|', but it actually puts each command on a new line. You can now easily read scripts of levels without having to open VVVVVV, or reading it the hard way! :viridian:

Currently, the program is Windows-only, but I'm also working on the Mac version.

To use it, just run the program once (you don't need to install anything). It will give some instructions and it will create a folder to copy levels to (C:\VVVVVV Script Reader). You can copy .vvvvvv levels to that folder, and when you run the program again, it will read all the level files in that folder, and output the scripts to a text file (each level gets a text file to which the script of that level will be written).

The program itself (the .vbs file) doesn't have to be somewhere specific, just in a spot where you can find it...

If you find a bug, please post about it in this topic, and if necessary, upload (or PM the contents of) log.txt.

DISCLAIMER:
ATTENTION: Don't move the level, always leave the original level in your VVVVVV levels folder in My Documents! The conversion shouldn't change anything in the .vvvvvv file, but just in case anything goes wrong, I am NOT responsible for any lost data! Use this program at your own risk. If you have a backup of the level, or if you leave the original level in My Documents\VVVVVV, nothing can go wrong.

CHANGELOG OF WINDOWS VERSION:
VERSION 1.0 [20-11-12]
First version

Download below! :viridian:

NOTE: Please ignore the '__MACOSX' folder in the zip. The program is a .vbs file, but you can run it the same way as a .exe. (just double click it)

That means: the first reply in this thread can't contain the letter A, the second reply can't contain the letter B, the third reply can't contain the letter C, and so on. After the 26th reply, we start with A again, so the 27th reply can't contain the letter A.

Oh, and I didn't mean censoring the letter or the word, but I mean using a synonym for every word that contains it!

For example the fifth reply, which can't contain the letter E:
Shouldn't look like this: This is a r*ply in this thr*ad!
But should look something like this instead: This is a post in this topic!

Of course, you can talk about anything, not just about this topic in particular.

Oh, and this post doesn't count, because it is not a reply.

And if you don't know which reply a post is, it's before the date and time, which looks like this, for example:
« Reply #1 on: Thursday 01 January 1970 - 01:00:00 » (This gets messed up automatically after each edit. You know what it looks like.)

Good luck!

When you test a level in 2.0, and you press ESC, you go to the menu with map settings.

When you test a level in 2.1, and you press ESC, you get the question whether or not you want to quit to the main menu.

Please change this back to how it worked in 2.0. It is a problem for me, because sometimes you get stuck in testing mode. If that happens, the controls don't work for some reason, until you change to windowed mode, after which :viridian: flips. Then you can press ESC, but you can't press enter. In 2.0, pressing ESC would let you go back to the editing mode to save the level and exit VVVVVV to solve the problem. But in 2.1, you can only quit to the main menu, so you lose everything you did after saving the level the last time! :victoria:

VVVVVV Tech Support / Pause screen
October 24, 2012, 03:18:40 PM
Please make it an option whether or not you want the pause screen to appear when you click outside of VVVVVV. Now when you want to make a screenshot using a program, or copy a script, it's a lot harder to do in 2.1 because it goes to a pause screen when you do anything else :victoria:

So, the rules are simple, just use unfitting/wrong smilies in this topic!

I'll start with this:
Have fun! :( I'm sure this will get funny. :-[

VVVVVV Levels / Prototype: PuZZZZZZles!
October 19, 2012, 05:23:46 PM
Today I got an idea for a game of some sort, and it works well as a VVVVVV level! :viridian:

I made a prototype to test it. It only has one level, but it's a prototype, after all.

Each room contains squares with one open side, like this:

The squares can be rotated clockwise, so you can walk to an adjacent square:

Like that, you can find your way to the exit.

I also have some other ideas that might fit within this game:
-Squares with more than one entrance
-Squares with no entrance (they will always block the way)
-Red squares that can't be rotated
-Blue squares that can only be rotated when you're in them (this will be hard to make in VVVVVV, because you will need a lot of rooms, especially when you have more of them in one room)
-Yellow squares that can only be rotated when you're NOT in them (this will also be hard)
-Squares with one-way walls in a certain direction
-Squares which can only be rotated a limited amount of times, after which they will become permanent
-Special squares which can be frozen and unfrozen, so they don't move if you rotate everything (also squares which can only be frozen one time)
-And so on.

I'm not sure if I will do anything with it, but I thought it was a good idea. Maybe I will make it in Game Maker, but then I need to do it on a Windows computer. The Mac version of Game Maker is a trial version with a limited time period (I thought?), that is too short to actually finish the game (and the game would be Mac only, unless I can just copy the .gmk file to a Windows computer and compile it into an .exe from there). The Windows version is also a trial version but at least it never expires. I also tried the Windows version in a Windows emulator, but it always gives an error message when I try to run a game. So, it may take a while before I get it done.

Until then, here's the first prototype as a VVVVVV level! Feel free to criticize! :viridian:

VVVVVV Levels / Level: Dimension Dimension
October 16, 2012, 08:58:26 PM
So, this is my new level! It's called 'Dimension Dimension'. (Yes, choosing a name was that hard :P)

It's a 20x5 map which features:
-Two small puzzles
-Ten trinkets
-A gravitron (I'm sorry :victoria:)
-Internal scripting, of course
-Teleporters
-...and more.

It has an original story:
:victoria: and :vermillion: have gone missing! It's up to you to find them!
I think that is original enough. :D

Everything else / The forums in 2010

Did you know that you can still access part of the forum like it was in 2010? :vitellary: It's not everything, but I notice that a lot has changed since then. The theme was different, there were only three boards, signatures were still allowed, some people had different avatars, and Terry had less than 100 posts!

Check it out here!

Super Hexagon / New game mode ideas
September 27, 2012, 04:57:57 PM
I read somewhere that Terry wasn't planning to make new game modes, but still, it gives us something to discuss about what would be cool to add in.

So, a few ideas to start with:

-Modes where you can only turn in one direction; tapping anywhere on the screen makes you go in the direction you chose before starting. The patterns would be optimized for this, of course.
-An easy mode, for the whiners :D (BAD IDEA!)
-A mode where the screen doesn't turn around all the time (like you see after 60 seconds on hyper hexagonest?)
-A reverse mode, where you have to... wait a minute, never mind. Ignore that.
-A mode where you can rotate the entire screen, instead of the arrow. (The arrow remains in one position)
-A mode where Viridian walks around the hexagon (the arrow becomes Viridian), and the lines you have to avoid have spikes on them. If you die, it acts as if you died in VVVVVV: he becomes red, you hear a cry sound, and he respawns and like in the Gravitron, there are checkpoints every five seconds (the timer counts down, and the number of deaths is counted)

Any more ideas?

Super Hexagon / Music playing in the background
September 14, 2012, 07:20:09 PM
If you start Super Hexagon with music playing in the background, the music doesn't stop playing, but if you start the game, the regular music starts playing on top of your own music! That isn't intended, is it?
