Title: The Quick Question Thread
Post by: Quote on September 15, 2016, 01:00:36 AM
People who have simple solution questions can post theirs here, without having to create an entirely new topic for it.  I'm sorry if this has been done in the past, but I just figured why clutter the forum.

I'll start.  Does anyone know the size of Dimension VVVVVV from the main game, excluding the intermissions?

It's 20x20, hence the maximum map size, though the Tower is kind of weird.

Will anything terrible happen if you open a level in both the VVVVVV editor and Ved at the same time?

Post by: LafondaSaysMeow on September 15, 2016, 01:13:05 AM
I don't know if it is humanly possible to open them both at the exact same second due to loading times and the fact that you only have 1 keyboard, so don't worry.

Why is this thread giving me deja vu vibes?
Why is it that when I change through this thread and another thread my avatar moves up a tiny bit but everything else stays?
Am I allowed to put more than one question here?

1. I know right?  It seems like such an obvious thread to have but apparently not I guess.
2. Hmm, can't answer that
3. Sure, why not.  Though since this is under VVVVVV help I would prefer if most questions are about the game.

(This one's probably really obvious but) Why is Viridian accepted as genderless by the community?

Oh, I think everyone is accepted as genderless in this game, except for Victoria. I mean, Verdigris and Vermillion are not particularly detailed in this instance. As maybe for Vitellary, that has got a low squeak.

Why this forum is slowly degenerating?
And, ingame: Where to find the Tower floor tileset?

I know I'm kind of breaking my own rules by answering this, but this question has been on my mind for a while.  My theory is, aside from the shitposters, that there aren't a lot of new people around.  It seems to me, even though I haven't been around here for long, that it's the same 10 or 15 people on this forum who are active.  Most of the new people here are either shitposters or post one level then leave.  Being within the same exact group of people isn't very healthy for a forum, at least in my opinion.  And I think we can all agree that VVVVVV isn't the most popular game in the world, so we don't necessarily have new people flocking in constantly.
Like Lafonda said, if this forum really does go to the Sacred Grounds, then we do have an alternative.

I mostly just feel like the main posters that go here tend to also go on that other forum that has more content that is mostly crap, so not as many posts come here, creating a chain reaction of not many people replying to the others.

You have no idea how long this degeneration stuff has been going on
it mainly started with the closing of distractionware, kreator did some damage, and then shitposty users began to join and everything went "downhill"

no seriouslywho honestly spells it "vermillion" it' "vermilion"
there's a difference between his name being just a color and his name being a name
I also like to think of verdigris' name being prounounced as "ver-dih-grihs" instead of "ver-dih-grea" becasue it seems more fitting for it to not just be a color, rather a name of a unique and special individual

"Ver-dih-grihs" is actually the correct pronunciation, and I know quite a few people in real life who get it wrong.  The term "verdigris" is an Anglicized spelling of Old French vert de Grice, which literally means "green of Greece".

Thanks for the explaining answers, you all. I'm slightly relieved knowing mine wasn't actually the only, erm, "bad time" on this forum. And, since I'm really addicted to this forum (my registration is pretty recent, since when I first checked out this site Vertiginous Viridian was a brand new level), and I don't want it to "go downhill" or simply die, I'd like to receive from one of you a link of this promised land you talked about.
Obviously if I'm not considered as a s37tposter.
Sorry, but since your level's release I censure every bad word with your number, Crazya. Hope it doesn't bother you.

You know, for a moment my mind considered this thing to that fake SuperHOT forum and its main phrase, #hacking only for the worthy.

Oh my, here starts the explanation stuff. I said I won't ever (ever) mess up Undertale and VVVVVV except for giving the title to that Vultarix (it was his?)'s thing. They are actually two great games (both with pros and cons), but they're just too different to be mixed together.

Why aren't internal scripts written like normal scripts?  I mean why can't they all be one way?  Also, can you put normal and internal scripts in the same script box?  Like if you only have to do one thing internal for a cutscene then do you have to do the whole thing in internal?

Terry made Internal for the main game, and didn't want to bestow game breaking and extremely powerful scripts on everyone, so he made the simplified scripting for custom levels. Internal scripting in custom levels really only exists due to Terry messing up while coding the parser.

I'm not sure, I think if you use the say method you can use simplified after the "internal void" as I call it, but I'm not sure about the iftrinkets method. There's probably a command for it, though.

Because internal scripting was never meant to be used in custom levels.

Technically yes, you can enter/leave internal scripting in the middle of a script but you'll probably have to deal with either using multiple scripts or getting stuff like dialog sounds (if your one internal thing is not at the start of the script) and/or possibly a partially internal textbox (though I think the text(1,0,0,3) method made that unnecessary)

You're not, actually...

If VVVVVV (as a dimension) is a 20x20 map, the polar dimension has to be in another level. Or am I wrong? And if not, how could Terry link two level maps?

How cool, linked maps!
Title: Re: The Quick Question Thread
Post by: LafondaSaysMeow on September 22, 2016, 10:20:33 AM
It's actually all one map. Terry had the source, so he could do this insanity without breaking anything, but now you have to do some crap in a text editor if you want bigger maps to work with. And it still doesn't 100% work. In fact, the polar dimensions actually weren't removed in the level editor. You can see this for yourself by using the internal command finalmode(x,y)
Title: Re: The Quick Question Thread
Post by: QwertymanO07 on September 22, 2016, 08:50:19 PM
Basically, Terry used room coordinates beyond 20 (or 19, I suppose, given how the game is set up).

The game just looks at your room coordinates and whether or not "finalmode" is active to figure out what room to load. Something like this:

if custom_level: loadcustomlevelmap(x,y)
else if final_mode: finalmode(x,y)
else if <coordinates are for the lab>: labmap(x,y)
else if <coordinates are for the station>: spacestationmap(x,y)
(...)

finalmode(x,y):
if x=46, y=54: load a map
else if x=46, y=55: load another map
(...)
else: load an empty map with name Outer Space

Untrue.  While playing intermission 1, the tutorial boxes confirm that Vermilion, Verdigris, and Vitellary are all male.  Example:

I can see why one would make that mistake though, it's a very minor detail.

Hmmm... did not know that... I'm sure you could argue either way, I just found that interesting.  I for one choose to believe Viridian is male, but, to each their own! :viridian:

Instead of bumping the CCCCCCCCCC thread, I'll ask here.  It seems that the link to the mp3 files in the thread CCCCCCCCCC retold is broken.  Does anyone have these files?  Also, I can't get the custom music to work for me in that level either.  I put it in the documents folder, and I'm using 2.2, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.  Thanks!

How do you use test boxes in internal scripting (with both methods and the whole script please)
Title: Re: The Quick Question Thread
Post by: QwertymanO07 on October 11, 2016, 09:11:00 PM
squeak(color)/playef(x)
text(color,x,y,lines)
The box's text
position(color,position)
speak_active

So, to make Viridian say "Apples", you would type:
squeak(cyan)
text(cyan,0,0,1)
Apples
position(player,above)
speak_active

This will just stay on the screen forever, though, so you must place endtext() after the cutscene.

Another thing to note is that position() overrides the x and y values in text(), so you can just put 0.

Thanks. Also, how do you use the createcrewman or createentity command correctly? I am trying to code it so that when you, the player walk into a certain room, a villi that you are not going to rescue is supposed to be standing by a terminal, so how would I use these commands?

I'm using Method 2 and some flags for the scripting, but I'm not sure how to use this command correctly in terms of writing it, like the x, y, and colour values

IS method doesn't matter, it's the same command no matter what.

For createcrewman:
x and y are pixel values, if I recall correctly the screen is 320 by 240.
colour can be cyan, purple, red, green, etc.
mood can be 0 for happy and 1 for sad.
There's also a fifth argument (and where needed a sixth one), which can be faceleft or faceright, but also anything else that you can fill into changeai(colour, X) (faceplayer is a useful one, or facegreen/faceyellow/facered/etc)

I recently downloaded the VVVVVV make and play application from distractionware so I can edit my player levels somewhere other than home.  However, I'm having trouble finding where the player levels created while using the application are stored.  I looked in the levels folder and the one I made wasn't there, so does anyone know where levels made with VVVVVV make and play are saved?

Heya people! I have two simple questions:
First: what's new in the update of the 3ds? (Version 1.1)
Second: is going to be addeda a level editorel for 3ds?

Thx for answering.

1: It probably fixes the secondary homebrew exploit that prompted Nintendo to pull the game from the eShop earlier.
2: Probably not, but it is possible to manually (not to Nintendo's liking either :P) add levels to the 3DS version, two tutorials have been made on how to do that.

I can't find it xdd

I haven't made a level in forever, how do you make a room have a warping background but not actually warp?
Title: Re: The Quick Question Thread

Just place an inaccessible Warp Line somewhere in the screen, then set the room wrap.

Do the same with an accsessible one to make only 1 side warp.
And two if you want two.

by calling createcrewman right before speak (recommended to spawn it offscreen, but you can't spawn it offscreen in (20,9))

the color is basically the quadruple parallel universe equivalent of the color you give in text

they're actually coords <100, main map coords are >=100

no seriouslywho honestly spells it "vermillion" it' "vermilion"
there's a difference between his name being just a color and his name being a name
I also like to think of verdigris' name being prounounced as "ver-dih-grihs" instead of "ver-dih-grea" becasue it seems more fitting for it to not just be a color, rather a name of a unique and special individual
That's how I thought it was always pronounced!

Ugh, the possibilities with towers though...  so many. I wonder how enemies and Warp tokens would work. Oh, and platforms. actually, its easy to find out how it would work. its the same, but scrolling down. also, I've heard that there are 406 rooms on the main map, and people say some rooms are overlapping. I wonder  what they mean by "overlapping"

:'( Towers
:'( The Tower Tileset (with background)
:'( Easily placed over 2x2 enemies (stop sign, yes men...)
:'( (maybe a tile colour for warp zone tileset that changes colours, like the final level)
Complete?

Terry has already said he doesn't want to introduce new features that break levels in older versions of VVVVVV and make people have to update if they still want to play levels. All things you listed would cause that.

However, he hasn't completely abandoned VVVVVV, there have still been updates for stability on newer systems and such, and some features were added.

who said that? that depends on the definition of "room" since the obvious exception to "a 40 tile by 30 tile area" is the tower in the main game. but the main map always has 400 rooms, technically, even if you have a smaller map size than 20x20. i'd say that the tower counts as one room, and since it takes up an entire y-coordinate, taking out 20 rooms (but leaving itself, so adding 1), we would actually get a number that is 381 rooms in dimension vvvvvv. there are no other rooms that take up more than a 40 tile by a 30 tile area though.
