I don't think it's completely random - the first run always starts at the beginning of the track, also there are pre-defined start points.

Super Hexagon / Super Hexagon and neurology?
March 22, 2013, 03:09:00 AM
I have a theory, though I don't have anything to actually back it up. I think Super Hexagon helps to develop one's nervous system, since it requires fast reaction and precision. I'm a particularly slow and clumsy guy, and actually it feels great that - with practice - I could pass the levels regardless (though I still haven't passed Hyper Hexagonest yet, but I have all the others). I didn't even believe that I am physically able to complete this game.

Is it possible that Super Hexagon may help those with certain kinds of neurological disorders? I'm not sure, since I'm not a neurologist or anything... Do you have any information on that?

Though I don't have any diagnosed neurological disorder or anything; but I'm really known as slow, clumsy, with bad reaction time - sure I'm worse than average. Not sure if Super Hexagon helped me with that - I don't really know how could I test it. So far it's just a theory.

But anyway, the bottom line is that if it turned out that Super Hexagon has a curative effect, that would be pretty much cool! Maybe it could be used as therapy! Though I'm sure it's not the first game that could be used for that purpose.

Not sure if you're all aware, but VVVVVV also has a TVtropes page! :)
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/VVVVVV

I didn't make it - though I did some minor edits. Though thanks to everyone who created and edited the page - TVtropes is awesome, and VVVVVV indeed deserves a great trope-analysis. ;)

If you're not aware, TVtropes is basically analyzing different kinds of media by recognizing different patterns, devices in actual works. (Though this is only a loose wording by me - it's easier if you check out the site, they describes themselves more much clearly and accurately.) My personal opinion is that the education of literature and media could be reformed if TVtropes (or the trope-based thinking it propagates) were to be used in schools. Though it's not the only way to analyze a work, but it's one of the most awesome methods, if you ask me.

Also not technically a bug, but resetting your scores in Arcade mode will reset your normal scores too.

Which sucks.

Ouch! That's a real pain! I would swear in a really loud and colorful style if it happened to me! :o

Flip Mode is really just the same game with the screen being rotated by 180°.

Then it would not work, it's flipped, not rotated :)

Shit, really! That would require the inverse keystrokes (left and right replaced). So it is proven that I'm stupid; and there is a huge difference between flip and rotation - though what I said is true to Flip Mode regardless.

Hmm... really... Though it's obvious, if you think about it... Flip Mode is really just the same game with the screen being rotated by 180°. Only there are a few tweaks, like the text not being flipped, "floor"/"ceiling" being replaced consistently in Intermission 1, and Positice Force playing backwards in The Tower.

Super Hexagon / Endings
March 14, 2013, 12:09:47 AM
I've managed to beat Hexagonest so I've seen the first ending...

But I wonder, what are the conditions of getting the ending? I've done the levels sequentially: Hexagon, Hexagoner, Hexagonest; no question that I got the ending at the end of Hexagonest... But what if someone does the levels in a different order, say unlock Hexagonest first? :o Will he get the ending without completing the previous levels (Hexagon & Hexagoner), or he needs to pass those levels too? Say, if someone does the levels in this order: Hexagonest, Hexagon, Hexagoner; where will he get the ending? When he passes Hexagonest or when he passes Hexagoner?

Also, now if I pass Hexagonest again, will I get the ending again? To be honest it would be nice to see it multiple times. ;)

If you're having trouble on a level, play an EVEN HARDER level for a bit, which'll make the other level seem easier in comparison.

I don't know the neurological processes behind this, but my theory is that your brain tries to adjust your perception of time to the game. When I see a video of Hexagonest, it seems quicker than it seems when I actually play it. When you play on a harder level, your brain adjusts your perception of time to that level; and then when you switch back to the slower level, you'll do better, because your brain works quicker since it's still being conditioned to the faster level. This is only my layman's theory, so probably it's just bullshit.

There have been studies that prove that the brain "slows down time" during a crisis, to give you more time to react. I suppose some of the waves in this game *would* count as a crisis

On a further note, while playing Hexagonest helped me to get conditioned for Hexagon and Hexagoner; nothing seems to help me against Hexagonest itself. Playing Hyper Hexagon and Hyper Hexagoner is good; and actually I can condition myself to get better scores on them than on Hexagonest, but they don't actually help me to get better scores on Hexagonest. For some reason, on Hexagonest I usually die around ~17 +/- 3 seconds over and over again within an astonishing number of tries. Today I was playing the game for hours, still I don't seem to get better. :( Although I have a 40 seconds record, it was really hard to achieve - sometimes I get a feel for it, and I do 2-3 relatively good runs; but then I revert back to the ~17 seconds average.

Hexagonest might have another secret... Yes, despite my brain tries to adjust to the speed, it just doesn't seem to be enough; still I don't think the core difficulty of the level is dealing with the speed... Hyper Hexagon seems faster, actually, still I'm able to get better scores on that - heck, today I've almost passed Hyper Hexagon (got 54 seconds) well before I would be able to pass Hexagonest. I think the main difficulty of Hexagonest is in the patterns: and not in the individual patterns; rather in the uncanny sequencing of those patterns. You concentrate on a pattern and then no matter how easy one comes after; you're just not prepared for that. You know how many times I died immediately before and after spirals those only require you to mindlessly press the button for a few seconds?...

Actually, one thing is sure, Super Hexagon does good to the nervous system - I'm known to be a slow guy, and I didn't even believe that I'm able to do what this game requires - passing the first 2 levels is already a big achievement for me... Maybe I'm not that bad, after all? :) But still, I WANT to pass all 6 levels, and I MUST see the ending!

One of my Steam friends has 53 seconds record on Hexagon - which would mean that she hasn't passed the stage yet. Regardless, she already has the Point achievement unlocked, which you only get when you pass the stage... How is that possible? :o

Are you ready for a Humble Bundle Super Hexagon Showdown?

^ Anyone participating?

I don't... I really can't beat 184.47 seconds. :(

Though if you do, feel free to post your videos here too! ;)

Super Hexagon / Super Hexagon Update?
March 08, 2013, 02:21:42 AM
Today Steam pulled an update for Super Hexagon - since for a while Steam doesn't show technical update news, I have no information what change has been made... Also, maybe only the Steam for Linux version was affected - I don't remember seeing the Windows Steam to fetch an update...

Any ideas? Maybe it's a bugfix?

At first, I thought that the change is that now I don't see my actual state (Point, Line, Triangle, etc.) at the upper left corner, instead I see my best time... however, I noticed I still see my state on levels I haven't completed yet, so I guess that only seeing the best time on levels I've already passed is normal - I mean, I guess it has always been that way and no change has been made there.
