I thought it was better to create a new topic here, instead of talking about this in the VVVVVV Records (http://distractionware.com/forum/index.php?topic=848.50) thread, where this discussion started. I also believe that Terry checks this board more often than the VVVVVV board, but I could be wrong.
This forum, apparently, doesn't have active moderators anymore.

I think that most users who are currently a mod have a more personal relationship with Terry.
There are 3 mods, only 2 of them have a personal relation with Terry. I believe that StephenM3 is just someone who likes Terry's games, or at least VVVVVV... could be wrong, though.

And the forum is inactive enough to make some people think it is dying!
Why is that related to the fact that this forum needs mods? The mods are inactive, but some members are active.
And all the people who think that this forum is dying are probably used to more active forums. I personally think that 20 posts/day, the current "posting rate" in this forum, is active, and I'm not comparing this forum to other forums, so this my fair opinion. I have, so far registered in this forum, anyway...
Slightly more related, why do spambots, apparently like inactive forums!? Check the forum stats and compare the # of posts in each month with the number of registrations in the same month to see what I mean.

Well, this forum doesn't get
that much spam, it's one spam post a week! Sometimes Terry isn't on the forum for a day or two and if there happens to be a spam post at that moment, it will stay there for at least a day. That's why it's better to have a mod who is online every day (like everyone who has volunteered said, including me) to make the spam go away at the moment someone notices it. Also, the mods should not just edit or delete posts of other people just because they feel like it. Maybe it's possible to only allow certain people to delete posts by new users, but I don't know every single possibility of SMF.
And, if there are going to be mods, I volunteer again, also because I'm online every day and because I have a lot of posts.
Likewise.
I volunteer.
But Dav would be a good mod cause he can sort out people's pictures that show up as [X]

I think I know the answer. If you post something on an inactive forum, there are fewer messages posted after that. If it isn't one of the newer posts, it makes the message very hard to find.
A lot of people volunteer for being a mod, but one should be enough :D
How about a poll where you can select up to three options? (http://www.derekyu.com/images/art/pixel/fu-idea.gif)
More mods aren't really needed, Terry does that job just fine.
Terry might not want to do that, though.

He had, after 4 days, 12.75 posts/day average! :o I wonder fi anyone else had an average like that several days after that person registered...
Also, if I remember right, Piplup1122 made 17 posts on the day he/she registered, but the average decreased fast.

I totally disagree with Bearboy and agree almost completely with Terry. Almost completely, because I wouldn't let someone with 11 posts, for example, be a mod, if I were the admin. In my opinion, you have to know the person's behavior. I believe that 30 posts is enough for that. However, consider person A, that is online 6 hours per day and has 43 posts and another person, B, that is online 5 hours per day and has 847 posts. In opinion, A is a better mod.
Bearboy: Do you know the # (number) of members that have 1000 posts or more in this forum?

Around May 2012, there was one member that was online every time I checked the forum. That person didn't post anything. I, by curiosity, checked that person's profile. I noticed it only had 34 minutes online! Well, at lest, that's what its profile said... I also noticed it had a site's address in its personal text. I didn't want to check that site, but I only realized that it could be a spambot some days later!
Also, why did you say they were online 24 hours/day? Nobody knows. They could have stopped at 2 a.m. and log in again at 6 a.m., both times at your time zone.
I have checked their profiles and didn't see any address. Jocuri's personal text, as well as the fact that he was online almost every time I went here made me think that it was a spambot, though. cartonito had an avatar! I think that this is one of the things spambots do to make others believe they're normal members...

The more people do it, the better! (Unless the mods don't like to get spammed by twenty messages if there happens to be a spam bot somewhere)
This reminds me of something. It has actually happened before that there was a fire in a city, many people were watching it, but nobody actually called the emergency services until 20 minutes later. Everyone assumed that it was done by someone else already.
Too bad you can't report users to the moderator... If I view the memberlist there are some users which were made to link to certain sites... Isn't there an option to delete all users with 0 posts who haven't been active after the day they signed up? That would clean up a lot of those spam accounts, and there is a low possibility that real users will be deleted, because real users don't create an account to abandon it right after they signed up. And if they do, well, that indicates they don't use it at all.

There is an option to delete all of the users with 0 posts, that's all. Terry, thinking that lurkers' accounts would be erased, posted a note (http://distractionware.com/forum/index.php?topic=261.0) saying why their account were erased, when he first did that.
He already did it at least four times (http://distractionware.com/forum/index.php?topic=932.msg7852#msg7852).
EDIT: For those wondering, making signatures not allowed here was something Terry did to avoid spambots (its mentioned in the thread on the 1st link).

I'm almost sure that everyone that has a username starting with "sania" is a spambot because one of them posted a spam post and after it was erased, I saw lots of those users in the "last member" area, only changing the number (and apparently some letters).

I think that a user with a username starting with a word, then one or two numbers, then another word, is likely to be spam. Look who registered last: 'Toma55lika'! The description matches the sania-bots' too: Female, united states!

As long as they don't post, there is not much of a problem, I think. You can't see them except if they signed up last and deliberately click on them, or if you click on them in the memberlist. But they should be cleaned up at some point.
Another way to prevent bots without posts but with spam links is to not allow users with 0 posts to edit their profile! I'm not saying that they should get posts, but at least it would be easier to avoid having bots on the forum! If they don't post anything, they can't add a spam link to their profile, and if they do post something, it's most likely to be spam so they can be detected easily and deleted right away! :)

I seem to be able to recognize spambots BY NAME! I mean, sometimes I look at the latest member and I think: Wait a minute, this is likely to be spam. And yes: last active 10 minutes after registering, and a spam link. Also, spambots tend to specify their gender as 'Female', and a lot of them say they are from African countries.

We should remove him for just having a name like that :D
Apparently Terry cleaned up all members with 0 posts again, and changed something about the ranks. When do you get 'Old Crewmate'? I also saw some members with 'New Member', or something like that.
I went to the member list and sorted by posts, and there are ≈30 members (≈1 page) with 0 posts, most are "New Members", some are "Old Crewmates". Everyone that I saw with 1 post (≈20 of them) are crewmates.
I think that Terry changed the ranks so that members with 0 posts are "New Members". I don't know about "Old Crewmates" though.

I think that they do the same on the SMF Community Forum, so it's possible. Another thing they do is mark links posted by members with <25 posts as "nofollow" and as other thing by members with >10 posts. Maybe the links don't work if they're with that mark. Is there anyway to do this, Terry?
EDIT: I think that making double posts with les than an hour between isn't a good idea, so I edited this.
This one (http://distractionware.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=21600), as well as the one Dav999 mentioned are spam. They were last online 5-10 minutes after they registered and they have a link. They're 2 of the 3 Old crewmates (last time I checked there were 4?! ???). The other one was/is online today.
I noticed that all 3 registered after or on 4 October and all the "new members" registered before that day.
I think I know why they are easy to spot other than links:
They say they are 28 and Female.
They probably say they're 28 because Terry's also 28.

Kill it with bans!
If it's a spambot.
Um, banning spambots? I wouldn't just ban a spambot, I would delete them from the site altogether! Banning them means they're only blocked from accessing their account, which is useless if you want to get rid of them.

I wonder why every some spambots provide their full, real, location...
And you think it is their real location? :viridian: I think it's just a random location to make them sound like they're not a spambot.
