I actually find the room "I'm sorry!" MUCH harder. I did it once in the beta, havent done it since.

Which one is that? I'm not sure I've seen it yet (I wasn't in the beta)

"I'm Sorry" at most requires you to go through 1 room since the last checkpoint. "Doing Things The Hard Way" requires... um... 9 or 10. Sure, there's backtracking, but still.

And it's only gotten harder since the beta!

I know. But I still think the new doing things the hard way is a breeze compared... Didn't take me many tries. I played DTTHW for fun in the beta after completing everything else. "I'm Sorry" isn't even remotely as fun.

Okay I just I'm Sorry and that was very easy to me, only took one retry. DTTHW took me about 700 tries. :(

I totally love DTTHW, though I really wanted to hurt someone with a name starting with letter "T" when I saw the "upgrades" applied to this level since the beta... But got it eventually.

I also got this trinket in the beta, but I had to do this actually TWICE because on the first time, after an hour or so of trying to complete the pass, I landed on the wrong side of that thingie in the middle... I was like "OMG OMG OMG, I'M GOING DOWN WELL, VERY WELL, DOGDING THESE PESKY SPIKES, NOW TRY SO HARD NOT DO DIE IN SOME STUPID WAY IN THE LAST ROOM AND FINALLY LANDING YEEEEES!" and then like "ok, so how do I collect the trinket now? wait... oh." ^^

BTW I'm Sorry is NOTHING compared to That's Why I Have To Kill You in the beta. =)

DTTHW didn't seem all that much harder to me, which is good because it was hard enough building up the muscle memory for that one. I DID get an awful lot closer to landing on the wrong side of the trinket though. I think I would have smashed my keyboard if I screwed that up after making it to the top and back.  :D

50 ultra-points to the first person to post a screencap of Viridian standing on top of that little speed bump.

First time playing the game, I'm stuck here too. I've racked up almost 500 deaths so far in total and maybe a good quarter of those have been on this damn series of rooms... The best part is, you don't even HAVE to get the trinket. I'm just stuck on my own determination. I definitely think cruel and punishing difficulty is gonna become one of Terry's trademarks, like it or not! :P

Great game so far though, very much enjoying it. Real cool atmosphere and on the whole it's really inspiring to play!

I gave up on this today. I really didn't want to, because it's not exactly close to a teleporter. That knowledge makes you want to try and try again, before you slink off with your tail between your legs. That room name about Bitter Tears on the way back up seemed so apt  >:(

The level design has been spot on. Love the game.

You can always come back and try later; sometimes hard challenges like this get more difficult as frustration starts to set in; you can't react as quickly when you've been attempting the same thing for hours.  I bet if you play around with other VVVVVV things for a bit, DTTHW will be significantly easier when you return.

Definitely. My first run through DTTHW took around 200 deaths, but the screenshot I posted a little while ago was done in under 20. Vici-Vidi-Veni on the way down is a piece of cake, after you've done it once.

Now someone should stand on the block with the flip play mode enabled. =D
Woowoo!  Gotta relearn Doing Things the Hard Way backwards.

That was surprisingly hard. Although the keypresses are exactly the same (because left-right isn't flipped), the flip mode totally threw off my timing and I practically had to relearn it.

I did three times. I'm glad I'm not the only one, though.

I had so much fun hating DTTW way. When i first got there i just had to beat it. It took me more than an hour or maybe two. I dont know. We you play this game time just runs by like nothing!

Ps: Which room is "I'm sorry"? o.O

It took me two 30 minutes practice sessions to beat DTTHW my first time.  (I hit the spikes on the right wall at the end once before my first good run).

Now it only takes me a few tries to beat.  I've even done it it twice in a row!

How do you do "getting there is half the fun?"  I come up the left side and return on the left side.

I loop around at the half way, less zig zags that way.

It took me 40min-1hour in two sessions to finally beat that room!
I hit the spikes on the right wall once. The second time I got there I succeeded.

Yeah... good thing I'm on a laptop else I'd have probably snapped my keyboard after hitting those spikes :victoria:

*edit* BAHAHAHAHAH VICTORY IS MINE :vermillion:*/edit*

So I had 1025-ish deaths when i had 19/20 trinkets.  Now on the order of 1700.   :victoria:

That said... vvvvvvictory is mine as well.  I went about 15 minutes over on my lunch break to do it, too...  kinda feel guilty.

Kinda.

It's not so bad once you have the muscle memory down.

My first time, though? 97 deaths. ;)

If your screen supports it, you can flip the graphics, then flip the keyboard, and play normally :P

It's pretty much my own damn fault, but this (series of) room(s) is severely hindering my enjoyment of the game. I know it's optional, I know I could just unlock things in the menu if I wanted to, but I still have the irresistible compulsion to get every "optional" thing on the first playthrough. I started playing the game a day or two after it was released and I still haven't gotten past my second level because of this damn trinket.

It's totally stubborn and absurd but I just can't even let myself continue without getting this, and it still has me totally stumped. I took a break for a couple weeks, just tried again now, died another 300 times, and gave up. I may never finish this game at this rate. :verdigris:

(Well no, I'll probably just cave and unlock invincibility after my 5,000th death in this same spot)

Make sure that you run the game in windowed mode so it is more responsive.

I actually find DTTHW to be one of the easier rooms in the game now, because I don't have to time anything to moving enemies or platforms or walkways.  It took me an hour of practice to beat the first time, and I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to beat it.  I played around in DTTHW a few minutes today, and way able to do it 4 times in a row.

On the other hand, I've attempted the first time trial, and I've given up on getting any time trial trophies. :victoria:

Another thing...  You can skip the trinket and still come back and get it on your first playthrough.

Aha! Good call. I'm having verrrry minor response issues/slipperyness so that may help a lot. Will try it soon!

My captcha for registering was GRRCRY, which is very apt considering the 200+ lives i've just lost trying to do this bit. Still not there yet, but inching closer and closer... Also found Prize for the Reckless joyously frustrating. 'I'm sorry' I found to be really simple in comparison, just a case of nailing the 'racing line'.

One of the things I've found amusing reading some of the reviews are those people who are paid to play and write about games suggesting that it on occasion isn't fair. On the contrary, it's perfectly fair. Frustrating as hell at times...in a good way, but when I screw up, it's my fault, not the game.

I've got one rescue to go. Can anybody let me know whether I can do that rescue then come back to DTTHY, or would I need to do a full playthrough again?

After finishing the game, you can select Continue to go get any trinkets you missed. So yes, it's ok for you to do the last rescue now.
