Title: No Death Mode
Post by: eyf on January 11, 2010, 07:57:15 pm
Yeah, I'm positively crazy.

I'd like to know if there's anything to gain from collecting all the trinkets in No Death Mode. I'd really hate to put in the effort if it wasn't required.

(And if so, how on earth can Prize for the Reckless work since you have to die in it?)

Also, Gravitron without dying once? Srsly.

The game acknowledges that you've completed no death mode, but it doesn't care if you've got 20 trinkets or just 1. It's up to you if you wanna try and get them :)

You'll find out! Congrats for giving it a shot, by the way, I think most people are a little scared by it.

This is very doable because the Gravitron is more or less a set wave pattern. Try playing it a few times from the menu if you wanna get used to how it works.

Of course, by getting all 20 without dying you get massive street cred (put it on youtube for a million Theoretical Dollars).

Thanks for the info! I'll aim for a trinket-less completion first. Baby steps, you know.

Was curious if anyone was attempting any runs at this.

So far my best run was this, I don't know how I died in that room... :victoria:

At a guess, I'm pretty sure those of us who don't want to cheat are blocked on picking up our first four S Ranks in Time Trials. :)

I'm still working on my fourth in The Warp Zone. Once I get it, I intend to take a shot at No Death mode. ;)

Edit: Yep, that's about as hard as I expected. Good job making it through Space Station 1, The Laboratory, and The Tower without dying, by the way. Those are the ones I was successful at in Time Trials with No Deaths.

I think it's safe to say you're a bit better than most of us are at this game. ;)

I unlocked No Death mode a few nights ago but I only played it twice, once I exited right away (to find my regular save deleted. :'(), second time I slipped on a banana peel ran off a walkway ledge into some spikes trying to get Space Station 2 out of the way first. I felt completely disheartened.

It said "Nice One". Ha ha, because I only rescued one. Ha ha ha.. ha...   :-X

I'll try it again when I'm feeling masochistic.

I think the best way to do it is practice. Just play like normal and pretend that no death mode is on. When you do die, you practice over and over again until you can do it perfectly without dying. Speed should also be the last thing on your mind. I still think it would take hours and hours of practicing and failed attempts before someone gets thins.  But I'm awfully surprised someone hasn't done it yet. I kinda thought that someone would hurry up and secure the bragging rights for this.

You've V ranked the Lab? I can't imagine being able to get the I'm Sorry trinket without a death.

S-Ranked. I suffer a mutual exclusion on that last trinket; I can get through without dying or finish the level within time and trinkets.

Both at the same time? Not really. ;)

Edited to add: I have managed to get that trinket on the first try before. It's all a matter of timing. :)

Yes, that must be it!

I'm currently working on unlocking no death mode.
Just gotta get two more S ranks.  I'll probably do Space Station 1, The Laboratory, Warp Zone, and The Tower.
Got Space Station 1 and Tower done.

Well, it took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, but I finally got the Master of the Universe trophy, which is why I joined the forum. For those wondering what it looks like, I'll drop a somewhat vague spoiler (highlight, copy, and paste to read if interested): it's been right under your nose the entire time!

I also have a screen shot of the trophy for anyone interested, but I wasn't sure if I should post it here.

BTW, if you want to know my secret to make getting the trophy a great deal easier, then read this spoiler: you don't have to beat No Death Mode to earn the trophy, I'm honestly not that amazing at this game

No doubt, I think the normal game should have finite amount of lives - to help with the tension. Only the skilled may survive.

I thought about starting a thread that said "spoiler alert", when spoiling the master of the universe trophy. Then, in the light of *certain threads*, I think people would think that I didn't know what was there once you complete it. Therefore, I will just say, that if you don't mind being spoiled, you can drop me a message and I will divulge you the secret.

I just think It'd be a shame to just blatantly throw it out there on this forum, when people are still trying to get it.

I honestly have unlocked the trophy, but as SoulEye said I don't think it's fair to post the image and spoil it on the board. I will send you my screen shot if you want proof (and don't mind having the surprise spoiled), just ask if you want to see it, and that goes for anyone who can agree to not post the image on the board.

Again, I want to emphasize that I am not the first one to beat No Death Mode, but I did find an alternate way to unlock the trophy, and I have already sent my screen shot to Terry to show him it's possible.

Hmmm, I thought about doing that, but I couldn't make a whole lot of sense of the gibberish in that file when I opened it in a text editor; I don't think I have the right software to decipher it! Admittedly, I am a total cheater when it comes to games, I will use every code possible to get the best ending the fastest!  :vermillion:

You've revealed the big secret, now let's see how many images of the Master of the Universe trophy start popping up ;)

That means what's far more valuable than an image of the trophy is a picture of whatever victory screen comes up after beating No Death Mode.

So since my method has been revealed, I'll post the link to the picture of the Master of the Universe trophy since more people will soon unlock the trophy the easy way. Please only look at it if you don't mind having the mystery spoiled:

That's "I want to be the guy". It's a frustration platformer that's way harder than VVVVVV, and a million times more punishing/evil/dishonest. Try it out only if you are a little completely masochistic and like to have fun waste your life a bit.
Title: Re: No Death Mode
Post by: StephenM3 on June 02, 2010, 09:12:25 pm
Yeah, IWTBTG is famous for the fact that 90% of its difficulty comes from the fact that it misleads the player and that most things are trying to kill you in ways that you can't predict -- so there is nothing you can do to prevent your deaths, unless you're psychic or have already played up to that exact point.  On top of that it's also a very hard platformer.
Title: Re: No Death Mode
Post by: The Brass on June 04, 2010, 01:52:25 pm
IWBTG isn't all that different from VVVVVV. In both games, you are supposed to die before getting through a hard part. The difference is that in VVVVVV you can see the whole room and plan, while in IWBTG you need to scout the obstacles. But in both games you need to learn the part the hard way, in VVVVVV mainly due to the game's speed.
Title: Re: No Death Mode
Post by: Timmaah! on June 04, 2010, 05:27:01 pm
I think the key difference is in that even in the insanely hard parts of VVVVVV, when you die you know it was because you made a mistake, or your timing was off, or your reflexes weren't fast enough.

When you die in IWTBTG, it's usually because a gigantic anvil suddenly appeared out of nowhere and crushed you without any kind of warning. I mean, that's the way the game was designed. It was made so that the only way to get through it is through exhaustive trial and error, and a lot of dying randomly because the rules suddenly changed. I get that is has a following of people who are really into this, but I managed to last about four screens of IWTBTG before I just got bored of acting out the creator's theatre-of-death fantasies.

Would it be cheating to just before entering the gravitron, take a break and play the gravitron on another computer until you feel you have it down... then go!? :)

I've actually tried this, with only slightly better results.  I find that the main problem with the Gravitron is that the part with the blocks coming from both the left and right is random (aargh, Terry, why? :victoria:).  To me, the random left-right pattern is the single hardest Gravitron pattern - I've gone a minute in the Super Gravitron and that pattern still kills me half the time.  On the other hand, the non-random left-right pattern is easy breezy.

Point being, if the randomness goes my way I have no problem.  If it doesn't, then I get nailed almost every time.

Well, I have no intention of making it past the Gravitron anytime soon, but I may as well post my best attempt so far.

That first jump on "...Not As I Do" can be a real pain. Too early and your crewmate smashes into the side of the platform as it's moving down, too late and your crewmate still smashes into the side of the platform, only it's moving back up. Either way, the result is the same.

Title: Re: No Death Mode
Post by: Poochy.EXE on January 05, 2011, 03:59:26 am
I managed to get further... by all of two screens. This time I missed one of the safe alcoves at the top of the screen by about 2 pixels and grazed the spike.

At least I made it past "...Not As I Do" - I had three runs that ended in failure on that screen prior to this. Persistence pays off.

By the way, what sequences do people use for No Death Mode? I usually do the Laboratory first, then The Tower. If I make it past the first intermission, I plan to attempt Space Station 2 after that, and save The Warp Zone for last (which I have no plans to reach).

If I ever become consistent at the first intermission, I plan on trying Space Station 2 first since it's the longest (and hardest) of the levels I can do with any consistency.

Edit: And about a dozen more runs later, I've made it all the way to The Gravitron, and lasted somewhere between 15 and 20 seconds. The route I took was Laboratory -> Tower -> Space Station 2. I also bothered to stop and get the "I Can't Believe You Got This Far" trinket, since it was trivial.
Title: Re: No Death Mode
Post by: Whirligig on January 05, 2011, 05:18:10 pm
I do SS1, Lab, Tower, and if I ever make it past Intermission 1 I'll do the Warp Zone. I've done it before with no deaths, so it should be easier for me than SS2.

As far as the Gravitron, I can typically survive the first 30 seconds or so with no deaths. One time I even made it 50 seconds, I think. It wasn't in No Death Mode, though.

After playing VVVVVV for 55.7 hours (according to STEAM) I finally managed to beat No Death Mode! If you don't believe me I can provide a screenshot of the victory screen, though I realize even that might not be enough to convince all of you. My time for the run was 16:23 and I flipped 787 times (though I didn't screencap the part that says that). Such a feat IS possible! I only got one trinket in the run. Perhaps in the future I'll try a No Death Run getting all the trinkets available.

Mega Kudos to everyone attempting this challenge. Especially that one guy who did it :o

I can complete the game with a small amount of deaths, but there is no way I could do the gravitron without dying. That thing is horrible.

Fun fact:

Driller gave me difficulty when running through the demo.

Now, I think I could clear Space Station 1 without dying.  :verdigris: This doesn't include Trinkets, though. :victoria:

I could definetely clear Space Station 1 without dying and while getting all trinkets (and I have done it before)
Title: Re: No Death Mode
Post by: Sendy on August 31, 2011, 09:43:35 pm
My death record for beating the game (no trinkets) is 84 deaths. I think the <50 death award is within my grasp, but master of the universe? Forget it  :D

EDIT: Isn't it weird how when you're going for a low-death run, you find the most stupid places hard, places you'd breeze over if you were just casually playing through?
Title: Re: No Death Mode
Post by: Whirligig on August 31, 2011, 11:19:40 pm
I've beaten the game in 19 deaths by using this simple trick:

Save often. Whenever you die, load your save. Rinse and repeat until the Final Level is too hard to do this practically.

It obviously doesn't work in No Death Mode.

Another weird thing is when I got to the Gravitron. You'd expect it to be really hard under the stress, but I did pretty much the best I've ever done (I died once on the last five seconds).

My record is 101 deaths on the main game. No, really. And because of my computer lag its impossible to get a V in the time trials, although I'm sure i could do it.

I've learned a bit using Time Trial mode. Got through the levels not with the intent to do it as fast as possible, but to do it as seamlessly as possible (i.e. without deaths).
However, I didn't train for the intermissions, so I had to "improvise", and we all see how that turned out.  :-X

My route through No Death Mode is usually Space Station 1 -> The Lab -> The Tower -> Intermission 1. Sometimes I die at The Tower, but mostly it's stupid deaths at both The Lab and Space Station 1, usually because I go too fast and forget to flip or something.

I've managed to get to The Gravitron, and survive 25 seconds of it.

Not bad IMO, but my definite goal of this game is to complete it, so... :P

By the way, I was thinking of doing it this order:

* Space Station 1 (survival ratio: 90%)
* Space Station 2 (long and annoying (in no death) level, not the hardest, but I want to "get rid" of this as fast as possible) (survival ratio: 60%)
* The Laboratory (the hardest level IMO, especially Kid His Age Bounce) (survival ratio: 50%)
* Intermission 1 (not that hard, the part I usually fail at is Do Try To Keep Up, not Not As I Do, anymore!) (survival ratio: 70%)
* Warp Zone (very easy level, the only annoying part is That's Why I Have To Kill You) (survival ratio: 70%)
* The Gravitron (not THAT hard, I've survived it in level replay sometimes) (survival ratio: 0%)
* The Tower (this one is the easiest for me, because I love the level and has played it a lot more than the others, so I can do it better than even Space Station 1) (survival ratio: 95%)
* Final Level (not impossible, and definitly easier than The Gravitron.. but I've not played this too much..) (survival ratio: 0%)

"survival ratio" is how well I've done it before. I mixed my level order a lot before, that's why The Tower has one.

you can make auto scripts to get past everything
We can?

Anyway, my new record is: Survived 10 seconds in The Gravitron. I really can't do better... Even if I practise on super gravitron for very long time., I still can't survive for even 30 seconds. This is impossible.

??? I don't get your post. No, we can't. The No Death Mode in the computer version is just playing the main game, ending the game when you die. I suppose that's the same in 3DS.

Ooookay.

I felt like speedrunning VVVVVV just because I can. This is how it went:

*space station 1 cleared, 0 deaths*
That's nice, every shortcut done w/o a single death

*the laboratory cleared, 0 deaths*
No death in Kid His Age Bounce :o - nice!

*space station 2 cleared, 0 deaths*
Hey, this is going well on the no-death front as well, even thought I'm not even running it!

*intermission 1 cleared, 0 deaths*
Well, intermission 1 is pretty easy anyway...

*the tower cleared, 0 deaths (no death-shortcut taken, at this part I just wanted to see how long I could survive)*
0 deaths...

*intermission 2 cleared, 0 deaths*
I SURVIVED THE GRAVITRON... OUTSIDE NO DEATH... Done better than I've ever done in no death lol

*warp zone cleared, 3 deaths*
Well, That's Why I have To Kill You always was hard... too bad I died there this time

*final level cleared, 12 deaths*
I could obviously have done better in The Final Challenge, 6 deaths there.

...I did my best no-death run ever... OUTSIDE no death. Brilliant! ...

It would really suck to have tried no death mode countless times, and failed, then play a regular game, and not die a single time, and never again succeed in doing -that- in no death mode... :P

Fiq's post

That's really good! I'd say that beating No Death Mode is definitely reachable for you.

Also, if you have trouble with "That's why I have to kill you" I recommend that you use the same timing that I use (involves waiting a fixed amount of cycles at some spot, hard to explain :viridian:) . I've only died twice in this room in my no death attempts I think, and none of these is recent. You can check the timing in most of my videos. (yeah for shameless plug-in)

We can only create and edit custom levels.
