Title: Introduce yourself
Post by: Davoo on January 06, 2010, 11:11:45 pm
Introduce yourself here.

Hi, I'm Davoo. I stumbled upon the pixelated masterpiece that was Don't Look Back when it first came out, and have had my eyes fixed on Terry's blog ever since. I'm really looking forward to VVVVVV as much as anybody, (although I might not be able to buy it immediately, because I'm being spending so much money on my DS, my Wii, and now my PS3 as it is) and hope it's successful to let DistractionWare continue and more.

I'm Neil and I like games. Recently wrote my final year dissertation on the viability of video games as a medium for art, which is how I came across Terry's blog. Now I've ordered VVVVVV!

Heh, my name is Chris too :3

Terry's games are amazing, and I want to persue a (maybe not career, but a) hobby in making video games.
I can program, animate, and draw pretty well.  I just need to stop being lazy >_>

Ahoy!  I'm a freshman computer science major.  I've done a little bit of work making games but nothing to major.  Mostly because I have terrible focus and am always flipflopping between projects.  I found Terry's games a few months ago and I must say that they are the worst things I've ever seen.  I'm also a big fan of sarcasm.

Hi folks.  I'm glad to see that other people are as excited for the release of VVVVVV as I am.  Here's hoping it's a huge success for Terry and gives him the opportunity to make many more amazing games like it.

Hi all

I decided to sign up because I am really excited about the upcoming release. I am a gamer, blogger (about games) and am also starting a course of games programming this year. I've lurked around this site for awhile and saw this as a great way to get involve in a way I hope others will when I get into making games sometime in the future

Hello everybody!

I'm a 27 years old English teacher from Spain who loves indie games. I stumbled upon Pathways through the indie games blog and became a fan of Terry instantly! I even used Pathways in my English class once with great success. The students loved it as well!

I was striken by the masterfully created Don't look back, since I love Greek mythology and I found Judith very interesting.

Finally, I think that VVVVVV is a masterpiece and I donated as soon as I found out that there was a beta around. The game farly surpassed my expectations.  I even got the 20 trinkets in the beta!! hahaha

I encourage Terry very much to go on with his passion :)

Hi there! I'm Kilian. 23. From The Netherlands. Art student and gigantic nerd. I love sci-fi, video games and comic books, and I'm aspiring to hopefully get into drawing comics professionally some day.

I came across Self Destruct about a year and a half ago and loved it. I've been following Terry's blog ever since and playing his games.

Don't Look Back was excellent and I must have forced about half my friends to play through it. I've been steadily following his progress on VVVVVV and I'm very excited about it.

Hey! I'm Josiah. I'm either a musician, audio engineer, pixel artist or game designer, depending on what I'm working on when I'm asked what it is that I do. I've done music for Terry on a couple occasions, the most recent one being Squish (http://distractionware.com/blog/?p=254).

I make indie games-- but when no one's looking, I put on spectacles and a fake mustache and work on commercial iPhone games to pay the rent. ;)

I've known of Terry since the QuickBasic days ("Chaotic Harmony" I believe he went by?), but only really started to take notice of his games when he started developing them full time. Big fan of Don't Look Back, Pathways, Judith, etc... VVVVVV is significant blip on my radar. :)

All the links to my stuff are in my signature so I'll avoid dumping them here as well.

Another "boring full-time software developer" here, Erik. I read Terry's interview the other day and the story about quitting to make games his life is very inspiring! I always wanted to be a game developer but I never quite seem to get the time to push something functional out. I'd give that technique a try if I wasn't afraid I STILL wouldn't be able to get anything functional out.  :(

Hello, I'm Jeremy, and I run Glorious Trainwrecks Dot Com (http://www.glorioustrainwrecks.com/), home of the Klik of the Month Klub (http://www.glorioustrainwrecks.com/wiki/Klik_of_the_Month_Klub), a monthly two-hour game jam that Terry has participated in from time to time.  I believe that anyone who feels like it can and should make games, so long as they have the right tools and a sense of humour about the whole thing -- that's what my site is all about.

Still waiting for Maverick Bus 3D (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=5443).

I'm currently a student attending a community college for my fourth year and finally I hope I'm all set to transfer.  I have been studying computer science with a capacity for programming, leaning towards gaming.  I havn't made any real big games but I am hoping to make some soon with a friend who is a graphic artist.
I'm not sure if I'll continue my current studies in computer science because of some difficulties with the math requirements, but we'll see.
I've been following Terry since Xoldiers and since then he's one of my favorite indie developers.  I check back frequently.

Well, better than nothing.

My name is Sara (I go under the name Sakura), and I am a fan of the game VVVVVV.
I first came across it when I watched a video from a podcast highlight clip on YouTube, the 4PlayerPodcast.
Later on, one of my friends had an icon of Viridian on her Skype, where I soon learned of the game's name.

Later I got the game. I played it, played it again in Flip mode, then later again in normal mode acheiving all the trinkets.
And let me tell you: I love the game so much. Terry you are awesome.

Anyways, I am an amateur music maker, and a fanart-making person, along with some originals.

And I hope to make alot of friends.  :viridian:

It gave me the 120 day warning. That mean I shouldn't post?

Oh, screw it.

I'm Arkie, and I'm another person addicted to indie games. So that there's no confusion in the future, I'm 14. People on forums have mistaken me to be much older or much younger than I actually am, so yeah.

Love readin', writin', gamin', and FaceBookin'.

But heck no I don't play those dumb FaceBook games, even though I'm always on FaceBook. I only go on to talk with friends that I hardly ever see in real life and that I don't talk with on forums.

Anyway, I am here! ;D

And I'm waiting and waiting for a sequel to VVVVVV. :'( It's an addiction.

A good start would be to make a level for VVVVVV or Knytt Stories (http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt+Stories). There's several reasons for this, such as:

These editors have a lot of flexibility, so there's a wide range of ideas you can use.
No programming knowledge required.
The audience already exists.
Plenty of other levels available for inspiration and understanding.
You can spend as much or as little time as you like.

It's better to start slowly and have something to show, rather than starting with a massive project that ultimately fails. Trust me, I know!

You can also learn a lot from playing games and giving feedback (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?board=6.0).

When you venture into making your own games, I would recommend releasing versions as soon as possible. This is because feedback and suggestions from people are extremely valuable and encouraging. I only had an overall goal with my current project, so all the feedback I'm getting is dictating the direction. People come up with ideas that are far better than anything I could imagine. Sharing ideas before implementing them is a great way to improve them, because people will say they like/dislike different aspects and give suggestions. So the ideas are improved and no time has been wasted.

Above all though, never neglect the other parts of your life in the pursuit of making games. Especially as some of the best games were created from personal experiences. Friends, family and work/school are more important than making games.

I am 23 and I'm a recent college graduate working as a programmer in Seattle.

I love VVVVVV and I bought it shortly before the Steam release. I was perfectly happy to pay $15 for the game, but I hesitated to recommend it to my friends while it cost that much. When the price dropped, I went ahead and did just that. I wouldn't say it spread like wildfire, but I definitely got a few dozen people into the game.

Hi there, all. My name is Blatch, and I am a pretty big fan of Team Fortress 2, plus indie games. I was pretty active in the Super Meat Boy fandom before here. I've 100%ed that game, and made a few custom levels for it. Basically, I'm from where Insani comes from.  :verdigris:

I never really liked the community, though, and I sort of petered off as they got madder and whinier. I'm glad this community isn't quite like them, because it's nice to have some peace and quiet.

One more thing, though: I'm a procrastinator and elitest at heart. I wouldn't say you can measure the time it takes to make my projects in Valve Time, but it's a good thing to remember. :vermillion:

also, i have a 3DS, and almost all of the 3DSware title besides Mighty Switch Force (pretty much meaning, i have put in over 100$ just in the games alone, from the system iteself).

Hi there everyone,
I'm Toby, aka Crazy Ivan the Space Biker aka cmpgk1024, and I like programming in C++ and video games(especially VVVVVV :viridian:)! I've just finished SSSSSS, a save switching program for VVVVVV(so you can have multiple save profiles) and you can download it at http://distractionware.com/forum/index.php?topic=1066.0.

I noticed that 1/3 of the people that posted their intro here are programmers, program as a hobby or want to program in the future. I consider this as a coincidence. Am I right?

IMO, anyone who makes vvvvvv levels can be called a programmer.

With "programmer" I mean person that makes games or other apps. Some are those people, some do that, but as a hobby, some want to do that in the future. All those people together make about one third of the people that posted here. We're not making games, we're making VVVVVV levels. We can't make games by just learning about VVVVVV scripting, can we? Considering that I'm part of the other 2/3, I don't feel that I can call myself a programmer. So, isn't this fact a coincidence?

No you can't. VVVVVV scripting is first at all a custom made scripting language, only contains bare bones functionality of a scripting language (not even that), and cannot really be fit in something else than VVVVVV. Even simple things like variables (the only variables existing in VVVVVVscript are flags, that can be 0 or 1), conditionals (VVVVVVscript has ifsomething(...,callscript)), isn't implemented "properly".

It *is* a scripting language, but an extremely simple one. Even BASIC is more powerful, and it was *made* to be easy to learn :P

Did you read my post well? That's what I was trying to say. Or, were you just saying that you concord with me and that my post was right?
Isn't it true that the fact below is a coincidence?

Bump! I think that this should be always on the 1st page. Even better, it should be styckied. There aren't any sticky threads in this board.

By the way, I exist. New to the forums, not to VVVVVV. Also, I was a bit late.  ???

At any rate, hello!
