Title: This is Portal - A PJBottomz Level
Post by: PJBottomz on September 10, 2011, 08:32:47 pm
Yes, it is.

Basic Info
- It's a 5x5 map.
- It uses every screen, but two are inacessible and two have inacessible parts
- It has lots of scripting. Lots. Of. Scripting.
- It seems to be my funniest yet.
- There are two endings, and one of them traps you.

For those who play Portal, have seen the ending, or were told about the ending, you'll definetely love this! Enjoy.

(Please notify me of bugs.)

IMPORTANT:

Okay, so everyone was complaining about the amount of scripts and the amount of delay. And checking back, I realized I did use an unessesary amount of delay, and some scripts were not needed. So, I removed some scripts and tightened the delay (or removed it).

I ALSO edited, "Flash", so that you can just drop down into the warp token. Walking into it caused a death. :'( Unfortunately, I can't place the problem with the scripts in Flash, so I don't know what to do about the repeating. Sorry.

Also, I removed the scriptless version, because that's just so stupid...

It looked like the colors blended....

An excellent level, though. Can't wait to play it to see how masochistic it is.  :vitellary:

UPDATE: Very good level! This level gets a V Rank.

That's just how the mapping program colors it. I can't fix that.

Oh, it is masochistic. I'm just about done with the last of the scripts.

-- Typin' while Plain'

Well, here I found an enemy that got Stuck, I'm sure that wasn't intentional wasn't? =P
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i88/badcoin/screen1-4.png)

Also, I got to the room where GLADoS speaks spanish and I can tell that was totally GoogleTranslate XD
*spanish speaker* I found some typos, I can PM you them if you really don't want the players to google translate the hint X3
Although the room itself is not that hard, got it on the first attempt XP

Hahaha, nice founder! XD
wow, you mentioned me O////o

--
Well that was one enjoyable game, I died a few times on the first screens, not too hard, not too easy it was medium difficulty for what this game is itself.
I like the scripting , it was very entertaining. I also got to the point where a script repeats every time you enter a certain part of the room
*goes to Editor*
It was Flash, then again there isn't much space to script so it's understandable

Other than that, the level was great!  :viridian:
I so did not fell on that Talking of her~ X3

Thanks for the feedback.

That enemy shouldn't be stuck unless you play with invincibility.

The typos were unavoidable - there are certain characters that the editor doesn't have.

SCRIPT REPEATS?! THAT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN!!!!!!!!! WHERE DID IT HAPPEN?!

Fell on talking her what?

It was Flash
Right before I hit the WarpToken, the script repeats every time I die.  XD

Are you talking about "Tilled"?

I'm sure it was Flash.
When you were walking towards the WarpToken, GLADoS kept repeating herself everytime I go into that room.
or was it called Tilled? owo
Gah, my memory is terrible XD

...how did you find out I make cakes? Did you dig right to the bottom of my post histories on other forums (where I don't even use this name)? Creepy...

You make cakes? :o

... GLaDOS knows all.
Title: Re: This is Portal - A PJBottomz Level
Post by: The Brass on September 11, 2011, 01:40:17 pm
A coincidence, huh.

Seeing myself credited for a level I had never touched was weird enough, but being listed as the sole "cake creator" really creeped me out. The uneasy feeling from the "hardcore guro manga room" didn't help either.
Title: Re: This is Portal - A PJBottomz Level
Post by: PJBottomz on September 11, 2011, 01:42:42 pm
Seriously.

I had no idea you actually made cakes - I just thought of a random name. Anyway, lots of people never actually touched the game but were mentioned - Sendy never designed a chamber, and none of the testers actually tested (except for TwoTails). I just put names to make people feel appreciated.

But the fact that you make cakes in real life and end as the Cake Creator in my level... That's a scary coincidence. :o

Manga room what?

"Story levels" aren't really my thing, but the dialog in this was well done. I also enjoyed the feeling of disorientation you managed to create with the branching paths and strange room wrapping behavior. Just a few typos I noticed:

ApeRture Science
impair (not impare)
"wouldN'T shut up"

On another note, I wasn't sure how I was supposed to get through the part with the shock squares. Are you supposed to be able to die by hitting the spikes through the gravity lines? They get me about one in four times when they're on the adjacent tile.
Title: Re: This is Portal - A PJBottomz Level
Post by: PJBottomz on September 11, 2011, 01:57:56 pm
The shocks were purposely supposed to kill you to make the script at the end (when all shocks have been hit). If you dodge them all, well, good job.

Hmm, I think I encountered a bug, not sure why it's only happening to me. The "top path" warp zone just warps me directly into a spike (I take it it's supposed to warp you on top of the disappearing platform)? I tried a few times and got the same result over and over, so eventually I just went back and got the cake ending instead.

I like a lot of things about this level - it's pretty, the difficulty is about right, and the scripting is funny and effective, when it works. My main criticism is that it just feels far too scripting heavy, especially with regards to "delay" commands, which really bring the pace of the level to a halt for me. There's too much scripting, and more than that I think a lot of what's there would be improved if it was shorter - Remember, unlike portal, story interrupts gameplay in VVVVVV. If the script was tightened up, I feel like this level would be improved a lot.

In any case, your levels are definitely improving, PJ :)

I saw the screenshots nd I'm playing it now

WHOA! That level was incredible! (I took the bottom path first :victoria:) I could totally feel it! The difficulty was not to low, not too high, but just right, the room names were excellent, you did this very similarly to portal (I'm not complaining, I like this version better) Good job, it was better than the screenshots had shown! 11/10 :viridian: is the final score, I like the room where GlaDos
said all the things it did to Viridian's crew, a very tense story! Best one yet!

I had the same issue. It happens because you're holding left to go into the warp token. Hopefully it can be easily fixed by adding a few platform tiles to block the player from running into the spikes.

This was happening to me, too. I ended up avoiding it by moving right as soon as I touched the warp. It took many tries and was one of the most frustrating things in the level, to be sure. I thought it was intentional, but in retrospect, if it was, I'm not sure why one of the dialogues along the way kept repeating. And it didn't really seem like a fun, fair challenge.

That's not a bug - just gently walk into it. Maybe I'll lower the warp exit lower onto the platform.

Anyway Terry, thanks! I didn't think it was too much scripting, but of course, I worry more about what OTHERS think. There were a few, though, that I thought were pretty neat - in "React", if you die, when you respawn at the checkpoint in, "Leave Now" it triggers a script. I took me a while to program that. And the top path has two different scripts, depending on which you take first. Of course, that's MY opinion.

UPDATE: The download is now TWO different versions - the regular one. and the scriptless version. I recommend playing the regular first, or it won't make any sense when you play the scriptless one. For those who have already played the regular one, the scriptless one is for less delay and more action.

Enjoy! (And like I said, please submit feedback so I can make this good.)

Er, just removing the scripts completely seems like an overkill response to my criticism of the level...

Well...  :'(

Jesus, I screwed my level up in both ways. I am a moron sometimes...

There are still some, like the terminal that hints how to beat the loop room, and the credits, and the one that removes the gravity lines in the last room.

I wasn't really suggesting that you go back and rework this entire level anyway; it's already pretty good! I just thought it might be useful for you to have some things to keep in mind in the future if you make any more VVVVVV levels!

(Sorry if it came across harsh; I'm probably a little too used to giving feedback to thick skinned developers who are looking for people to poke holes in what they've made)

Actually, it wasn't that harsh in my opinion.   :vitellary:
What I would suggest is Revise the scripts, make the delay between dialog less than what it is now.
Sometimes I would see the screen with no text for two seconds in most of the scripts, I think that's what he meant on his feedback.

Oh, it wasn't harsh - trust me, that wasn't anywhere near it. In 6th grade, I spent two weeks putting my heart into a social studies project and my teacher flat out said, "Well, that was a waste of time."

Even if it was, it wouldn't bother me - anger from others has no affect on me anyway.

Anyway, yes, in the future, I will use a LIMITED amount of scripts - in fact, there were a few I was considering remove. I'll say that from now own, I can only use under 30 flags.

Fantastic level, you've got the Portal humour just right, although it seems that GLaDOS dislikes Viridian a lot more than she does Chell. There is a single script that keeps repeating itself on the top path if you die after going through the warp though, but that can be fixed easily enough.

The level is definitely good though, it looks aesthetically pleasing, the difficulty is just right and the flashes in Tilled were an interesting idea. Must agree with some people though, the delays between certain scripts were a little too long for my liking. The amount of script itself wasn't too much of a problem, just waiting between lines seemed a little exaggerated in a few places.

Pretty nice level, enjoyed most of it, although the constant misspellings of "Aperture Science" made me shiver.
Oh, and the constant shocks in Tilled were really annoying, you might wanna cut down on that a little bit since I didn't find that particularly funny.
Also, GLaDOS felt pretty out of character, she wouldn't just let Viridian go, she'd try anything to kill him; but I guess that can be forgiven, as the level is not quite long enough to make something too substantial out of it.

Otherwise, good work.

I thought I fixed most of it? Oh well. Sorry. :'(

Those were purposeful, otherwise, the script at the end wouldn't make sense.

I guess, just a little. But, since he can talk, it was worse than Chell. XD

It was an OK level, my main complaint would be that all of the challenges seemed to either be either cheap shots when you walk into a room or ones where you could just hold down left/right to win :/

It was more of a story-telling level than a challenging level. Sorry 'bout that!
