Why does Vermilion show in on random places on the map at random times?

I'm glad this wasn't muddled with extra mechanics. A large part of what made this fun is the single-mechanic-focused design. That's why Driller feels impossible the first time you encounter it, but is a peice of cake if you return after beating the game: you're actually developing and improving a skill.
What's Driller? I'm interested.

Hello, I just bought VVVVVV about 5-6 hours ago. I've only beat the game in ~2 hours. So I'm guessing this is where the fun begins! I have 12 out of 20 trinkets. I skipped a few because I didn't want to deal with them. So yeah
