VVVVVV / Re: VVVVVV Patch, V1.2

 :viridian:

Also, bug report for 1.2! (This one's minor)

While showing your terrific game to friends of ours (who we expect will buy a copy), we experienced a teleporter malfunction. It seems that teleporting right after Space Station 1 caused this to happen.

The results: Viridian teleports and then........ nothing. The screen remained focused on the teleporter and play did not continue, much to our amusement. Should we blame subspace interference? :vitellary:

(Edited to add: I have not tested whether this repros, as I'd rather not flatten the game in progress (and lack spare equipment and the will to install the game twice). Perhaps someone else has experienced this? :) )

A touch buggy (my first attempt ended stuck in a wall :o), but otherwise fun. I imagine 4k doesn't allot much for error-checking. ;)

"Thanks Terry," indeed. :viridian:

VVVVVV / [Spoilers] Vitellary and No Death Mode
February 10, 2010, 05:58:28 AM
I'm not good enough to get through Space Station 2 without dying, so I must ask:

In No Death Mode, what is Vitellary's dialog in Intermission 1?

In the room, "Now Stay Close To Me...", Vitellary lampshades the presence of Checkpoint ("C") blocks. Since these aren't present in No Death Mode, is his dialog the same... or different?

Inquiring minds must know! :vitellary:

I continue to wonder why we can't get an SWF copy for cross-platform patches and gameplay.

Perhaps so we don't go and embed it on a web page? ;)

Edit: Partially answered by Terry on page 2. Good luck with the Linux build! :)

I finally got my gold trophy today, after being locked at 26.63 seconds for the past week or two. :viridian:

A full minute though? I think I'll stick to time trials. ;)

Hah! Well, I don't ever plan to make a sequel to VVVVVV, and if I did, I don't think I'd go in that direction.

One of my IGF judges suggested I do the same thing as you, actually - unlock new abilities as you rescue each character so you can reach new areas and blah blah blah and so on. It annoyed me a little, because I felt like he was judging it as the game he felt it should be, rather than what I had made. He basically wanted me to turn it into a regular metroidvania, even though the game is specifically designed not to be one.

That said, something like what you're describing could probably be a lot of fun. It's just not really compatible with what I wanted to do with VVVVVV.

I would recommend, however, that you consider letting us play as every member of the crew with different dialog trees.

It might not be special powers, but it wouldn't be as hard to implement and offer some handy replay value. ;)

Wouldn't that require an infinite loop then? You fall through a single screen in less than a second, and the world map is less than 30 screens high.

It does. There are levels where this is possible. ;)

VVVVVV / Re: Rank system for time trial
January 19, 2010, 10:04:29 PM
The lowest rank is a B.

Meeting each of the following goals improves your score one letter. They must be completed in the same run to be cumulative:

* Beat the par time
* Finish without dying
* Collect every shiny trinket

Thus, in the same run:
* 0 goals met: B
* 1 goal met: A
* 2 goals met: S
* 3 goals met: V

Clear as mud? :)

VVVVVV / [Tips] Share your room strategies
January 19, 2010, 01:11:46 AM
A recurring theme of many rooms in VVVVVV are areas that are much simpler than they actually look. There are many rooms, spread throughout the game, that can be completed with a single button press or well-placed flip.

In this thread, I task you to share them such that others might benefit. I imagine eventually this would help anyone writing a walkthrough, and yes, there will be lots and lots of spoilers.

I will begin by stating: nearly every room in The Laboratory can be solved in a simplified manner. ;)

You've V ranked the Lab? I can't imagine being able to get the I'm Sorry trinket without a death.
S-Ranked. I suffer a mutual exclusion on that last trinket; I can get through without dying or finish the level within time and trinkets.

Both at the same time? Not really. ;)

Edited to add: I have managed to get that trinket on the first try before. It's all a matter of timing. :)

You'll get it. ;)

Well played, sir. Well played. I'm still bound somewhere in the 20s.

It's not so bad once you have the muscle memory down.

My first time, though? 97 deaths. ;)

I went back and looked. Seeing as I missed that thread, and completely didn't pay attention to the spikes, point rescinded. ;)

Thanks for the follow-up. :)

Specifically referencing the last strip in the series. That's a nice catch. :viridian:

Off-Topic, but Watterson is still around and publishing follow-ups to the series. He decided after ten years that he wanted to retire to painting; good for him, says I. ;)
