VVVVVV Levels / Re: Detox [2.0]
November 02, 2022, 12:14:54 PM
on 2nd playthrough i got irony poisoning from the overdose chapter ("bad art is good not because art has no inherent value and what you think of as gods are but mortals, but because it's really funny when people put effort into something that i deem bad :D") - not because of changes made in v2.0 but because i just looked at how i felt more - and i guess the overdose dunking was self-reflective but it felt like a message that people are allowed to make "bad art" as long as they "correctly" regard it as hilariously bad, or accept that they belong in a "cringe" niche that the main clique can analyze and ridicule.

my main experience with the vvvvvv community in general (way back when, during tolp) felt like trying to act "in line" so i could break into a clique - don't feel any genuine emotions because only the designated art people were allowed to, make fun of the cringe young newbie users it was acceptable to make fun of, etc, and this feels like a byproduct of trying to produce a small amount of change in that era, dismissing the "stop making make bad art, don't even try" attitude with a marginally better "bad art is good because you can laugh at it or point to it and say 'weird' "

it's a good audiovisual still (this is weird terminology but what i refer to is the experience of the level as an experience rather than as a conventional video game level; the interactive audiovisual carved out of something intended to be a run-and-jump platformer is a continually resurfacing medium that remains underrated), especially the trolley problem dialogue, the surface-level "bad art is ok" thing, and the realization that serious art isn't better than "bad art" - but then the way "bad art" can be "better" seems to be mainly that one can marvel at it, chuckle knowingly, and say "wow, this is bad". (at the end the "serious art" is shown in contrast to be unconsciously authoritarian unlike the "bad art", which i do agree is a problem with art that tries to be dignified, and it's a legitimate reason to support "bad art", but the whole "haha bad art funny" thing almost contradicts it)

the "omg this should be required playing :-*" responses on the thread kind of reflect that this level is by, and for, a clique that the level sort of deconstructed but that it didn't actually dissipate

7/10 but i don't know what "out of ten" actually means because i'm scared of most vvvvvv levels i haven't played yet ;D

good recognition (still) of the scorn and eye-rolling toward "bad art" (as though it is actively misanthropic and witnessing anything that steps out of line is detrimental to people's mental health), and the desire for Politically Neutral fun internet spaces where "we're just here to chillax and play video game" overrides concerns about toxic rightist bullshit. tolp era here is obviously long gone but that kind of thing still exists in other spaces, which is horrid

VVVVVV / Pacing Energy drumloop is sampled from Beat Box
December 21, 2021, 09:54:53 PM
just posting this here because i feel immensely dumb for not figuring it out earlier despite having an enormous beat box fixation 5 months ago (there's like 30 different versions of it by the original artists alone :o) and beat box being sampled basically everywhere

art of noise - beat box

souleye - pacing energy (identical to vvvvvv version; timestamped 13 seconds, right before the drum loop kicks in)

the sample here is the first 2 measures of beat box. the drumloop and most misc percussion uses it (including the cut-off percussion at the beginning)

this also means that the familyjules cover is officially a metal cover of beatbox

well, that's my post. hope you liked it! -bert

thanx 4 playing!!! the music was definitely chosen to go with the general "weirdness" of the level. song info is available if you look at the ogg metadata after extracting it from the vvvvvvmusic.vvv with songflip or ved. there's also alternate versions of the songs if you have mmmmmm enabled

re: checkpoint starvation: there were several things we changed about the level when we were tidying it up and preparing to post it (such as rewriting scripts to refer to viridian as they/them, making the bottom-right portion of (2,2) and (6,2) possible, and (7,2)) but the bizarre placement of checkpoints took some weird, nostalgic place in my heart. it was some sort of very conscious choice, even knowing lack of checkpoints is typically a design flaw, to place the checkpoints so arbitrarily such that rarely you'd have to do a series of detours from a distant checkpoint to get back to where you were before you died. and this could just be the nostalgia speaking, but i feel like it sort of adds to the absurdist feel of the level? with checkpoints seemingly ignoring where they'd actually be most wanted and manifesting anywhere.
(6,2) in particular... making the bottom path possible may actually have been a mistake? originally the spike spam was so dense it was plain impossible, but there's actually a completely different way to get the trinket at (7,3) which i won't spoil. so making (6,2) impossible and not relevant as a challenge such that the closeness of the checkpoint didn't matter may have been some stroke of genius that we ignored during our revision... whoops

glad u enjoyed and thanks for replying

Hi, I'm a creative and original individual and that's why I made a mashup album.

https://ncrecc.bandcamp.com/album/ham-mash-em-up

99% sure people only talk about mashups on the Discord sever but. Hey. It's a music.

I liked grouplock, it is not bad in my opinion. Sometimes when I clean my commercial property in Costa Blanca [link was edited in later, removed] I put it on. Like this the process is much faster, gives me more energy  ;D
omg a spambot likes our music  :o  :'(  :-*  :-[  :vitellary:
in the meantime we also did https://ncrecc.bandcamp.com/album/ham2
and https://ncrecc.bandcamp.com/album/ham-mash-3m-up
plus a sampler and two shitposty non-albums
vitellary said "after thinking about it a bit i'm going to drop a very weird take and say ham2 is one of my favorite mashup albums in the community"/"i could listen to a million good sounding mashups and go "that's pretty alright" but if they sound good because they just do something that works then it feels like it hasn't made an impact; whereas, like in ham2 for example, a mashup doesn't necessarily sound the greatest, but it does something that other mashups haven't quite done the same way, i love it anyways" which i'm pretty sure means ham2 sucks eggs but in a good way

this is an 8x8 open-world level we made when we were 13, slightly touched up and coupled with music we listened to when we were 18 (which is right now lol :viridian:). every room is filled, there are six crewmates, and there are 18 trinkets.
like 6x7 planet this should evoke some nostalgia for vvvvvv in ye olden days none of us were present for when internal scripting sounded like the name of a sci-fi novella at your local book swap that shut down due to covid.
unlike 6x7 planet it's rather absurdist and you're best off comparing it to something pilotredsun would cobble together at 2 am if he had school in the morning and was 13 years old.

VVVVVV Levels / 6x7 Planet

This level is almost EXACTLY a month old but whatever 8)

First level I've ever actually finished and made public aside from a shitty joke level from half a decade ago that parodied racist joke levels (and was probably seen as a racist joke level, oops)

No int scripting, some direct mode but nothing super fancy. Some rooms were cribbed from an unfinished prototype I made also probably half a decade ago, and the level in general was inspired by Souleye's lax, open approach to level design. Plot isn't much aside from dialogue making fun of some old attempts of mine to make hard sci-fi canon out of V6. Moth called it "super old school", I guess it is but my intention was just to make a level in a week with zero fluff.

Oh and it's 6x7
