For the Time Trial - you don't have to avoid the checkpoint in I'm Sorry.  If you accidentally hit that checkpoint, you can still clear the killer spike as long as you also hit the checkpoint in Please Forgive Me.  Not optimal, of course, but you can still nab that V rank.
