VVVVVV Levels / Re: Back to VVVVVV
October 13, 2012, 06:09:18 PM
Sorry, I got stuck again. There's a glitch in the DIY VI Repair room. I had 14 trinkets at that point (including THAT one, yes), and all that happened is it said "Hm" when I used the PS terminal, and nothing happened when I used the T7 terminal.

Ah, got it, looking through the script - it seems that the Polar Dimension PS script "trinketcheckbonus" is faulty. It fails to allow for the possibility of getting that bonus trinket before going to the Polar PS for the first time. An extra line in that script is needed: ifflag(39,diyvirepair)

I think, anyway. That looks like it might fix the problem. Otherwise, I think you have to wait until you've activated all power sources before going for the bonus trinket, maybe?

Spoiler: Oh, by the way, I cheated. Sorry! I noticed something in the scripts about 21 and I knew it was nothing to do with the one in the bonus area (that's unobtainable), so I found a bonus text string. I didn't know which area it was for, though, but I tried it in each area until I found it.

Sorry, I've just found another glitch. I loaded my save and it started me in the Gravitron on the ship, with only the lower line there. I'm stuck! I think this is because I saved on the ship after doing the Gravitron.

VVVVVV Tech Support / Re: Beta patch 2.1 Final

It all depends on what was agreed with Nintendo / Nicalis. I'm pretty sure their claim is only over the 3DS version; I can't believe Terry would sign away his rights to the PC versions. Of course, without knowing what's in the contracts, we don't know. I think if Terry's allowed to do it, he should release the source because if he's not going to make another patch, the users should do it.

There are still some bugs - in fact, some of the bugs listed as "fixed", such as quicksaving in a tower and pressing M in the script editor, amongst others - are not fixed at all. It'd be nice to know whether this is a possibility, definitely.

I actually think Pushing Onwards is better than Positive Force, but maybe that's because I've played a lot of Boshy, and so I've heard Positive Force much more. I can't decide which is my favourite, though; it's either Piercing the Sky or Potential for Anything. I also picked Popular Potpourri.

Why am I the only person to notice this is ripped straight from I Wanna Be The Boshy?

VVVVVV Levels / Re: THE NEW LEVVVVVVEL ARCHIVE!
October 12, 2012, 08:02:25 PM
I've got a feeling a couple of the levels might not be the latest versions. The Extra Zone level in this archive pack is slightly larger than the one in its own thread; I don't know if there are any other differences.

Also, there are several broken and empty levels there.

This crashes for me as soon as I use the terminal that would take off the computer boss's last piece of health. I'm using 2.1 final. I looked at the script and couldn't see why it'd crash (although say(46) is quite a high number, but other high valued say commands worked fine up to that point)...

It crashed for me after finding Verdigris, at that same terminal. I've just downloaded it and I'm using 2.1, so what's happening?

Just completed it, and the Super Gravitron doesn't work. No enemies appear. I didn't want to cheat the trophy; I'm assuming it would save my best time, so I'll pass, thanks. I want to earn it fairly. Apart from that, it's great! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The levels I tried all had it happen in 1,1 but not all in 1,2. It's weird; try it yourself - load a few levels in the editor and try to change warp directions with W.

I honestly don't think anyone has ever got that trinket the hard way at full speed without cheating. At the very least, a checkpoint is required at the top to make it even possible as far as I can tell. Otherwise, you wouldn't get anywhere near enough attempts at the downwards trip to get good enough to be able to do it.

I know this is a big bump, but there are a couple of things I'm wondering about this level, and I didn't think it was necessary to create a new topic.

Firstly, what's the purpose of the hidden unnamed room east of the Crazymaker room? You can reach it by going south from Camera Three. I think it'd be a great place for a trinket; I missed that room on my first playthrough and a couple of Youtube players missed the room too (blind playthroughs). Then there's that big empty box. No easter egg? I think it's the only unnamed (used) room in the level.

Secondly, I think a couple of "autopilot" rooms are broken with the 2.1 final patch - due to the vertical inversion planes being moved one pixel left. For example, in Ping Pong Flippety Flap, in version 2.0 if you go through the GQ's Tears room as intended (holding left non-stop as you pass the blockage on the right of the room), you'll eventually autopilot to the exit (whether you hit the spikes on entry to PPFF or not I think), but in 2.1 you die on the spikes by the left gravity line, due to the realignment. Other gravline rooms are affected too - "Rat-tat-tat" works correctly if you just hold left on entry in v2.0, but in v2.1 you have to slow down a little to actually hit the platform.

"Perrin's nightmare" is considerably easier in v2.0 due to the difference in the gravlines, too. Maybe the patch should have graphically realigned the gravlines but not actually change the pixel on which they work, so as not to break existing levels?

And in "Safe within the walls", does it work as intended? If the double-length conveyor with the spike that normally kills you on autopilot goes left instead of right, the autopilot eventually puts you just below the top right checkpoint.

Finally, it's possible to get stuck at the end. If you're on the edge of the screen when you reach the final Outer Space screen, you'll get stuck in a lower right Warp Token infinite loop. And you can't get past the final crewman without rescuing him, so you have to leave the first crewman if you want to make sure you get all the trinkets, but I think that's already known.

EDIT: One last thing. The "Doing things the side way" trinket doesn't require you to do things the side way. You can just go to the bottom and diagonally flip past the spikes in the way. I'm thinking this is intentional, though, because the designer could easily have added more spikes to prevent this?

EDIT again: Even "Velocity determines impact" is affected by the gravity line change. Previously, the leftmost vertical line, when it sends you back downwards while moving right on the lower moving platform, it would put you on the lower conveyor belt, bouncing you back to the top moving platform, then back to the upper conveyor. Now, with it moved a pixel left, it puts you straight on to the upper belt, making the screen quicker on autopilot.

It's not just confined to 333333, either. I'm not sure what levels I played this time, but Quantum Tunnel showed "Music 4" twice in that spot, then "<" again. Hmm... I wonder if it's something to do with room 7,2 in the main game (similar to the way the music starts playing in the editor based on the last room you were in, if it triggers music to play in the main game's room of that position)? Let's see... 7,2 in the main game is "Purest Unobtainium"... This doesn't seem to help. Any ideas? It really baffles me!

Load pretty much any level into the editor and try to change the warp direction of room (1,1) and it won't let you. "ERROR: Cannot have both warp types". Some levels also won't let you change the warp direction of (1,2), but some will. The weird thing is that in the level "Soul Searching" I also tried this, and it said the same thing in (1,2) but the room is already set to warp horizontally. Is this a glitch, and if so, how was the room set to warp horizontally if the editor won't let you do it?

The levels I tried were 333333 (easy mode), Soul Searching, Line Wrap, Quantum Tunnel. I had the glitch in (1,1) in all four of those, and in (1,2) in two or three of them. There were no warp lines in the rooms in question so it doesn't make sense!

It took a while before I isolated the cause of this, but I did it by searching for the text strings that appear - Google pointed to the 333333.zip download link (Google's able to search the zip for text now! Nice!)

Anyway, if you play or edit 333333 (easy mode) - you don't have to do anything, just open the level then quit if you want, then open Quantum Tunnel, some text will appear in the room labelled "Back Again" (7,2) in the bottom right corner, just under the VVVV by the exit. Only the first five characters are visible, but the editor shows the text string to be "This took a lot of fixing and stuff!"

You can press R then left-click the start of the text to read the full string. If you do this, press Enter. Now, right-click it and it's gone. Reload Quantum Tunnel, and a different text string is there - now it's "The Lab was made". Repeat this, and it's replaced with "<", and the < will keep reappearing if you delete it and reload Quantum Tunnel. (Note that all this is done WITHOUT saving the level. It's easiest to check in the editor, but you can play the level instead if you don't mind walking to the spot to see the erroneous text.)

Anyway, I downloaded 333333 (hard mode) and tried it with this. Now you get "Was it really worth it?" followed by "The Lab was made", followed by "<" etc.

Does anyone know why this happens? If you load Quantum Tunnel first, this doesn't happen, but loading either version of 333333 causes some text to appear in this spot. It's very odd.

EDIT: Someone else noticed random text appearing in his level, too, in this topic: http://distractionware.com/forum/index.php?topic=1072.msg8520#msg8520 . Maybe it's a weird glitch with VVVVVV that if you load certain levels after certain other levels, some things get carried over for some reason?
