VVVVVV / Re: Frame rate challenge

I suppose, but you would have an unfair advantage, so I'd accept you as a "second winner" and give both you and the first other person to figure it out the prize. Plus, it'll be hard to do without communicating with yourself :P, but I can make this an exception to that rule. You can only use in-game evidence.

VVVVVV / Frame rate challenge
December 04, 2010, 02:37:10 AM
Here's a simple challenge. The winner will receive an mp3 of one of the songs from CCCCCCCCCC+. Sure, the full soundtrack of CCCCCCCCCC+ will be available once it comes out, but it'll probably be a while (long story that involves me rewriting a large portion of the engine). So, here's the challenge:

Find out what the frame rate VVVVVV uses is, and PM me with proof/a detailed explanation of how you figured it out. You may not use any other programs or electronic devices, or contact Terry; your only tools are a pencil and paper, VVVVVV, and your mind. :vermillion: Innovention and lateral thinking will be critical.

Good luck!

What's black and white and red all over?

The intermissions!

Here's a crazy idea I had. I obviously don't expect this to be in the next version of VVVVVV (if there is one), but I think this would be pretty cool.

This is a screenshot of the Secret Lab ...

... and this is what I came up with after some crafty image editing. Cross your eyes until the two images appear on top of each other.

What do you think?

It's easily possible in GM. However, right now arcticwolf is waiting for me to program an INI system and I, uh, haven't ... been ... working on it ...  :-[

Why did Captain Viridian cross the Warp Zone?

To get back to where he started.  :vermillion:

What do Pushing Onwards and a cave-in have in common?

They both have A flat minor.

Yeah, I know, it's not too good, especially considering that SoulEye would be more likely to express the key as G# minor (though I don't think that matters with chiptunes). Anyone have any better ones?

VVVVVV / CCCCCCCCCC+ Official Development Topic

CCCCCCCCCC+

By Whirligig

Official Development Topic!

What is CCCCCCCCCC+?

CCCCCCCCCC+ is an expansion of CCCCCCCCCC, which is a demake of and unofficial sequel to Terry Cavanagh's VVVVVV. Its main feature is a new set of levels, but it will also have other useful features, such as additional custom level capabilities and bugfixes.

Current Progress

Completed features:

-TELEPORT keyword for custom level teleports
-A fill pattern for large blocks of wall
-Abnormal topology (wrapping, like The Warp Zone)

Features in progress:

-New levels (2 out of 13)
-New music (2 out of ??)

Planned features (nothing here is promised):

-Have custom cutscenes and people, and probably terminals
-Be able to select the level set to play, or a custom set
-Custom level set saving
-Vertical moving spikes
-Add error checking so that levels with mistakes display a meaningful error instead of crashing the game

Known bugs:

-Flip keys activate repeatedly on hold
-Progress is lost upon using the X to quit
-Graphical glitches occur using certain topologies

How can I help?

You can help in a few ways:

-Level creating
-Testing
-Composing music (especially if you're SoulEye :viridian:)
-Coding, but this would require a substantial knowledge of C++, most likely a copy of MS Visual C++ 2008, and probably a while studying the engine since I'm a cruddy commenter and parts of my code are really bad

PM me if interested. I'll put you in the credits!

VVVVVV / Re: CCCCCCCCCC: possible update

I'm about to post another topic serving as a development topic for the expansion. Anyone will be welcome to see what I'm doing, and even pitch in and help.

You program for a living? I'd love to hear more about that.  :viridian: What is it like? Is it fun? How much do you work?
#206
Listen to SoulEye's chiptune "Chipped Face" on his website. Notice that after a few seconds, the chord progression sounds a lot like Positive Force's, the melody contains at least three of the same notes (consecutively), and the key is only a semitone higher (A minor instead of Ab minor). Could Chipped Face have inspired Positive Force and/or Pushing onwards?

EDIT: Aww, I pushed YYYYYY down to the second page. Sorry Robson. Hey, maybe with the extra custom level functionality I'm adding to CCCCCCCCCC, this means we can compete with each other!  :vermillion: On second thought, maybe not. Hmm.

On second thought, I probably will change the EXE.

In fact, I'm going to go ahead and fix some of the issues CCCCCCCCCC originally had, allowing things like custom stories (complete with a home level and cutscenes!) and such. Watch this space!

Sure. I assume you also want them to be chiptunes, right?

Looping might be a tiny bit of a challenge, but not too hard. It would be nice if I could select the part of the song to loop (some sound engines can do that), but I won't assume that's possible for the moment.

EDIT: Also, if you need any help with the programming aspect, let me know. I've had Game Maker for somewhere around 3 years by now, and I know a lot of GML and that stuff. Right now, I'd suggest this: instead of having random enemies every 5 seconds, have it check every step and based on a random probability make an enemy. The probability should stay low, around .01 at first, but slowly and steadily increase. I used something like this for Pearl's Gravitron in CCCCCCCCCC. Then again, that turned out kind of poorly, so maybe you should do something different, like use patterns (timelines would work best here) and execute random patterns in turn, like the Super Gravitron. That approach would probably work best.

If you want, I'll gladly make the music. It probably won't compare to any of SoulEye's, but it's okay.

VVVVVV / CCCCCCCCCC: possible update
November 12, 2010, 12:47:53 AM
So I'm considering making a new version of CCCCCCCCCC. The update would have harder levels, and possibly different music, but nothing else new really; I would only edit the external resources and not the .exe file. So overall it would be somewhat like TLoZ: Ocarina of Time Master Quest, if you know what I'm talking about. Would you like to see this? Or should I scrap the idea?
