I tried the Linux version on my desktop. With Vsync disabled there is not much difference betwen the windows and Linux versions.

This must be a problem with my laptop then. The framerate feels quite choppy on a netbook with an Atom n270 and GMA950. I know it's starting to be slightly old but I can't help but think it shouldn't be a problem for this kind of graphics and game. Also I have no problem running the flash version.

I started playing this game on Linux and I thought the controls were way too sensitive, quite often moving to an adjacent side meant moving too far, resulting in me trying to slightly tap the keys with bad results. I can't beat 20s.

I tried the Windows version and I was surprised to see I was able to blast my record to 38s without really trying. The controls really felt different.

The thing is, I'm playing on two different computers and I can't switch OS. So I can't say if it's really the software or if it's the keyboard or the screen resolution that makes it different. One could say I just got better by practicing, but I went back to the Linux version and nope, still quite bad at it.

Linux version: played on a netbook with a resolution of 1024x600
Windows: played with an old classic keyboard with a screen resolution of 1280x1024.

So that means the linux version will never be playable with a joypad. Awesome.

What about providing the linux binaries in the steam folder Terry? Or a secret key/url to download the linux version outside?

I tried the last Linux build by downloading the humble bundle .deb version then deleting /sur/share/VVVVVV/VVVVVV_32 and copying the new VVVVVV_32 in its place. The Humble Bundle version was labeled, 2.0, the one i have now is 2.1 with a new OpenGL in the options.

I shall say most of the bugs I have reported in the old thread are still here http://distractionware.com/forum/index.php?topic=428.msg3424#msg3424 . All the joystick problems are still here and notably the funky one with the inverted directions on the map screen. Independently we need an option to remap.

There is good on the front of the screen anyway. The opengl option I don't know what it is supposed to do but in my case it only makes the screen buggy with funky resolutions. After turning it off it was better. Now the automatic fullscreen is working, although I can't use the functions keys of my laptop anymore. These are keys like Fn+F8 to turn the volume down, I remember they were working with the previous version.

The mouse pointer is forever on screen while playing.

I shall say that my version of Ubuntu is now 11.04

No. Steam patching system is autonomous, you will have to wait for Steam to patch your game.

Just to say that the deb in the Bundle uploaded the 7th of this month is a somewhat messed up version. The deb says 2.1.2, the game says 2.0, and I say it's the 2.1.beta that was in the first post as it has all the bugs I mentioned. I didn't try the tar.gz as it's probably still the old original 2.0 (upload date says 2011/07/28.)

And as a deb it doesn't create an application menu shortcut.

Ooh, does that mean we will have a nice deb installer? Cool.

VVVVVV Tech Support / Re: The enter key does not work

The problem may be between Return and Enter, which I believe are not the same, ASCIIly speaking. And probably some keyboards/drivers are mixing them up as on most software the result of pressing one is the same as the other. Pressing Control+Return (the big key on the alphabetical side) seems to have the same effect as Enter (the numerical key). Or it's the other way around.

found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enter_key#Differences_between_Enter_and_Return

[edit] On my desktop computer with Xp Return (alphabetical key) works but not Enter (numerical key).

Linux link is missing the .gz part ;)

The problem with auto fullscreen is still here tho (don't know if you addressed it in this version.)

Let's give details: I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition on a Eee901. My screen has a default resolution of 1024×600, which incidentally is my desktop resolution. When the resolution is set to
- fullscreen auto: the game switches to windowed with the window having the size of the previous (fullscreen) resolution used.
- fullscreen 1024×768: the game switches to windowed with the window having the size of 1024×768.

In both cases the game itself has a resolution of 320×240 in a corner of the window, the rest being filled with black.

About the pad: I tried with a standard USB four button pad (a NES RetroPad). I like not having up/down mapped to action in game, this was my main gripe with joy2key and the like. I've got a few bugs tho.

Buttons 1 2 and 3 are mapped to action, button 4 is apparently mapped to the Map menu  and action in the same time: pressed once it goes to the menu, pressed more it does nothing. When pressing Enter on the keyboard it goes back to the game with Viridian flipping. No button for M or Esc but it might be because of my own lack of buttons on my pad.

Mind you the pad works perfectly under Xp (didn't try VVVVVV itself) but I have yet to find a reliable way to test it on Ubuntu. Linux is notably unreliable when it comes to pads so maybe its a driver problem.

Ooh and when alt-tabbing from fullscreen, it swiches to windowed mode. Normal behaviour?

I tried with another pad, a USB Saturn-like with 9 buttons. Same as before for the first four buttons. Button 5 opens the Map Menu but again does not close it. Buttons 6, 7 and 9 do nothing, Button 8 gives the Esc Menu (and does not exit its own menu but its a general gameplay behaviour which i shall complain as Esc never exited its own menu. Minor I know but frustrating when you hit it by mistake and just want to hit it again to make it dissappear. Just like how Enter works. But I digress.)

Did you have the 360 pad in mind when elaborating the controls? I can't test one on this computer, support is not good on my distro. But I'm assuming that because it's the most widely used type of pad with Xinput and you used 8/Start for Esc. That would mean you put A,B, X for Action, Y and LT for Map Menu, and Start for Esc.

Silly bug with pads: in the Map Menu, Left and Right are inverted (keyboard is good). And in the Esc Menu you can navigate with left and right but not up and down.

Gamepads are noot supported in the level editor. This is understandable due to the nature of the editor but if you get in by mistake you have to grab the keyboard to get out. Maybe having every button mapped to show the editor menu so you can flee the editor?

Oh and USB hotswap is not supported, like for almost all the games in the world. No big deal but as I'm testing several pads I had to mention it.

May I insist on having the sound muted or significantly lowered when unfocused and/or using the esc Menu? The music is awesome and SoulEye did a great job but I' like not to share it when smeone is calling ;).

I was about to post the cursor thing. It is used in the level editor but nowhere else basically. Is it possible to show it only in the level editor?

The sound doesnt mute when hitting enter and Esc / pausing the game.

A possibility to accept custom resolutions? I had that problem which is now solved-ish but it would have been nice to have been able to input a custom resolution where the game puts black bars as fillers. I wonder how this game looks on some 1080p hdtv widescreen stuff in native resolution.

I had a post about a few improvements (in my opinion)for the controls and the menus, I'll have to find it.

That solved my stretching problems indeed, thank you!

Still when selecting fullscreen auto after being in fullscreen 800x600 the game switches back to windowed. its now just a minor annoyance tho.

One funny thing: when switching between fullscren/windowed with Alt Enter, the text itself does not change and stay as before the switch (the screen still says windowed even if its now fullscreen for example). Again, minor annoyance.

Apparently "Auto" doesn't work on my computer. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook edition. The other fullscreen modes work well.

Hi, is there a possibility to have the game not distored while playing in fullscreen on a wide screen? Something like black bars on the side would be perfectly fine with me.

Also, native controller support?
