Any reason why there isn't a mute option?

I saw this being discussed a little bit in another thread, but I was wondering why there is not a mute music/sound option. Its a bit of a bummer if you want to listen to a podcast or other type of audio with the game's volume playing over.

Has it ever been determined if there was any specific reason why muting the sound isn't an option?

edit: Should have mentioned that this is for the iOS version.
