The enter key does not work
« on: November 07, 2010, 03:38:56 pm »
The enter key does not work. Whenever the prompt comes up to press it, and I do, nothing happens. I can't save, open the map, or teleport. I'm running v1.2 on a Windows 7 system through Steam. Please help.

Yikes, that's kind of a unique one! :vitellary:

Ok, obvious things to check first:
 - Have you tried turning it off and on again?
 - Are you running in fullscreen? Try running in a window and see if it still happens.
 - When the game is running, can you press enter in another application?
 - Can you press enter in another application when it's not running?

-When I turned it off and on again, my progress was erased. I had gotten to a teleporter and it said the game was saved. And the key still didn't work.
-I was running it windowed, and I tried fullscreen, but the key still doesn't work.
-Yes, pressing enter in another application works.
-Yes, that's how I'm typing right now.

Wow. :o

First problem is easy enough: you're probably using some so called privacy programs (CCleaner or BetterPrivacy, most likely) which are deleting your saved game. VVVVVV saves data to your flash cache, and these programs delete it. You can tell them to exclude it though - the cookies are called "dwvvvvvv_unlock.sol", "dwvvvvvv_quick.sol" and "dwvvvvvv_tele.sol".

If the enter key issue is happening in a window as well as fullscreen, it's not a flash security setting issue, which unfortunately rules out my best guess as to what the problem is. :victoria:

Ok! Next thing to try: Here's a flash game that uses the Enter key for input: http://www.e4.com/game/freelance-alchemist/play.e4 - could you give it a try and let me know if that works?

A fix of sorts that you could try is to use Joy2Key (which is included in the install directory) to set another key on your keyboard as enter, but hopefully it won't come to that. I'm sure this is a bit frustrating, but hopefully we'll be able to sort out the problem! You're the first person ever to report a problem like this, so I'm really just trying to diagnose it from scratch.

I was using CCleaner, so thanks for resolving that issue.
The flash game works properly.
I plan on trying the game on another computer, to see if it's my laptop that's the issue.
Thanks for your help so far.

Ok! Please let me know how that goes.

(another thing worth trying is to play the flash demo and see if it happens there?)

I tried it on another computer, and it worked fine.
Then, I decided to try uninstalling flash player on my computer. The game worked fine after that. I have no idea why.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry to resserect a dead thread, but with the humble bundle release today, i'm sure there will be many more people with a similar problem.

I installed the linux version today, and everything works great except for the enter key.

As above, the enter key works fine on the example flash game online, but not in VVVVVV; i have tried both full screen and windowed.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

Please. Does anyone have a solution? I have tried everything that has been posted. And this seems to be the only thread in the world where someone else has had this problem. I want to play so badly!

This will be my only bump, nobody hate me... :S

Could I ask, what keyboard are you using?

Have you ensured that any modifiers such as Caps-lock, Scroll-lock, Fn, Scroll-lock, num-lock are not enabled?

They are not, and it was still not working until somehow after pressing enter like a million times on level 1 I got teleported. Now on level 2 enter is working perfectly. I just hope it keeps working like this.
