Yes, use warp lines instead.

Be careful with it, though, because this is basically lying to your players.  Generally, the best way to use warp lines is to place something else, like tiles, at the edges that warp.

Like a custom tileset?  Yeah, that's totally possible and has been done before.

You can change the directional warp backgrounds, but not the 4-way background.

The 4-way bg seems to be generated through code, not tiles.
