So....did we finish it or not?

A very lovely game, but we were unsure if we finished it or not. The first time around, we got all the keys, all the blocks, got to the final room where I linked the spikey yellow block to the orange pyramid and we walked in. They screens went yellow and red and we were put back to the beginning. Convinced we did something wrong, we did it all again and linked 6 blocks to the yellow one in an order that was on a yellow pedestal. This time, when going in the rooms, there were people in it, but when going in the last room we were still put back to the beginning. So did we link it wrong or is that just supposed to be the end of the game? Very confusing! Thanks for the help.
