not really, all you need is use R and then quit without saving. it remembers the deaths of every room but only counts for total deaths the ones you have saved

if you suicide yourself on the outer space and quit immediately, you can do it.
it happened to me that i was save scumming to get the "less than X deaths" trophies, that i got: total deaths 6, hardest room (with 16 deaths) the gravitron (i got an instant ROFL moment). if you suicide and quit multiple times, you might get the same results in any other room including outer space, tough you must be fast to do it on the first room before the cutscene disables the controls.
_{it also gave me a "i win, yeah" moment as it was the moment i finally found a glitch on the main game (yes, i love doing this), until now that i found one which allows you to play every music on nearly every part of the main map, minus the levels themselves due to the unavoidable checkpoints}
