About the Egg game

Hello there! Recently, I’ve been working on a game about being an egg.

You play as a normal egg exploring a big 3D world, looking for nests to hatch in. Over the past few months, I’ve posted the occasional video of it over on bluesky, but it felt like the time had come to say something about it on the blog, all official like.

It’s been a luxurious learning project for me, which has basically been my goal, in general, for a while now. I’ve been enjoying the process, and exploring every little diversion along the way – like learning how to make an egg model crack with cell fracture, or how to make a good egg yolk with raymarching shaders, or how to make cool low poly trees with a skin modifier in blender.

It’s wrapping up now, and it’s ended up being a very small game – but there are a few little moments and cool ideas in there I’m really excited about! Looking forward to sharing it when it’s done – probably won’t be too much longer.

So what are you up to? Like, generally?

This screenshot above is from a throwaway experiment I did a few months ago, learning about how fancy modern lighting works for 3D games. It looks pretty cool, right? For the last little while, I’ve mostly been focused on learning new tricks like this. Basically, I’ve been trying to get better at making games in 3D.

Here’s the thing: when I walked around the exhibition floor at Amaze this year, I was completely blown away. I don’t say this lightly, but I feel like indie games right now are the best they’ve ever been, and I want to live up to that new standard with my own work.

There are big, ambitious things I wanna try my hand at making – but right now, I feel like I barely know where to start! There’s a gap between where I am now, and where I want to be, and I’ve been working on closing that gap. Wish me luck, I guess!

But is one egg… un ouef?

A quick shout out to Stephen, who is also making an egg game, but his is shaping up to be a good bit more hard boiled than mine – check out a recent video here! (Both these games started as jam projects for an impromptu #eggjam that we decided to host for ourselves.)
