Radio Silence

Radio Silence is a game I made on day two of Ludum Dare #17, which had the theme Islands. It’s the first game I’ve made in Unity – a big thanks to Dock and Perrin for helping me get somewhere with it! The game’s Ludum Dare page is here.

Audio is important in this game. Best played downloaded, fullscreen, and with headphones.

Downloads:
Windows (9.2MB) | OSX Universal (13.5MB) | Unity Source (18.3MB)

Alternatively, you can play it in a browser if you have the Unity plugin installed:

playthrough for those who can’t or don’t intend to beat the game themselves http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03lU2dxQh9c

I liked this a lot. It’s got one of those great moments of realization when you figure out that the sounds are diagetic.

@Gregory: Thanks :) I’m quite happy with how this came together.

Had this very viscerally terrifying moment on the next-to-last pickup, where I thought that that was it, that there was no more to be done but the game was going to deny me a sense of closure. btw this is pretty much unplayable in-browser because it seemed to lose keyboard focus whenever my mouse cursor went outside the game pane.

    Ah, feck :(

One big problem with Unity is that it seems to run really inconsistently across different machines and versions – someone playing last night had the sound cutout when they made the browser version go fullscreen. Sorry, I don’t think there’s anything I can do about that :(

Whoops, I just now realized you could right-click to go fullscreen in the browser version. Oh well — I just downloaded it and things were fine.

I didn’t find them all but I thought it was a very interesting game with a cool atmosphere.

Hah, when I found the penultimate one (out on its own) I laughed into my beer. :D Nice work.

That was just… That was _neat_! Nice work.

Very cool. I loved realizing that A) I could swim and not die and B) that the sound of the ‘ocean’ actually came from a radio. Great work!

This was disturbing. But I like disturbing games. They usually convey some important ideas. Oh well, this one did not. But still, very interesting concept and great execution. Very good work asl usually :)

Very cool concept, nicely executed! I loved how you kept everything very simple but still made it very engaging. The overall ambiance and style were great.

I guess if I had any critiques is that with every radio that you get nothing else interesting happens, and the ending is kind of a downer. But, hey, for the 48 hour deadline it’s understandable!

Unsettling and a little bit magic.

You, sir, are a master of design.

Just discovered your games, and been playing them most of the week- I’ve been looking for something like this my whole adult life. Does the success of vvvvvv mean more retail games?

  16. Terry on May 13th, 2010

    Thanks :)

VVVVVV has made it possible for me to keep making games for the rest of the year at least. I don’t know when I’ll work on something that big again, though.

As Andy said, very cool, especially the swimming thing. I fucking hate dying.
