X O L D I E R S

Time for something a little more serious!

Xoldiers is a short level based shooter by me and Cactus. The X stands for explosions*! (*no it doesn’t)

[Edit] We’ve updated the game! The new version includes a level editor, and, get this, an online level database accessible inside the game! Our simple approach comes with an upload limit so only small/medium size levels can be uploaded, but still, neat, huh? 🙂 This version also includes in-game highscores, as well as some minor bug fixes.

Check it out here:

Squish

Squish is my entry into TIGSource’s Bootleg Demakes contest, a contest that asked participants to remake a modern game in a retro style. It’s conceptually inspired by the very underrated PSP puzzle game Crush; rather than demake the game for a specific system, I demade the core mechanic in simpler terms. In Crush, the player can compress the 3D view of a level into a 2D view and transverse the level as if it was a 2D platformer. In Squish, the player compresses 2D views into 1D!

Honestly, I started out thinking of it as a joke entry – but the more I thought about it, the more convinced I got that there was potential for some really interesting puzzles here. So I figured I’d give it a shot – I wanted to make *something* for this contest after all, considering I wasted a whole week on a project that was just way too ambitious.

There’s quite a lot I wanted to implement but didn’t have time to – I started it on Friday, finished the engine on Saturday and as a result designed almost all the levels in one day, on Sunday, so it’s pretty rushed and it’s still kinda buggy… All the same, I’m really pleased with how it came out! You can download it here.

Squish features music by the awesome Josiah Tobin! You can check out his other music projects as Swimfail on myspace!

[edit] The game’s since been updated with a level editor and eight new levels, as well as two new gameplay elements!

[edit again] The game’s now at version 1.3 – check out this post to see what’s changed.

Anyway, have fun, hope you enjoy it!

This game will self destruct in 10 minutes

I’ve given Self Destruct a big update, fixing loads of problems that the sleep deprived contest version had. There are loads of fixes and new features (read about them here), but the biggest and coolest is an online highscore table! Hope to see some of you on it 😀

Phew. Time to get back to Ciellus, I think.

[Edit] The above link is for the regular online version of the game. Due to an oversight on my part it can only be played online! However, an offline version is now available here! At a later date a proper update is planned to fix the remaining issues with the game.

[Edit] Here’s a quick video of it in action:

All Hail Mind Control Rocket

It’s out! Download We Love Mind Control Rocket (2.8Mb, Windows) here!

I found an artist eventually – the very talented Derek Yu volunteered to create all of the art for the game, making it look better than it has any right to.

I’m sorry that I didn’t have time to make a tutorial – I’m going to work on a text one to post later on. I’m a little drained after working some crazy hours to get this finished for the deadline, but when I’ve recovered, expect a long post-mortem on the project 🙂 I’m also hoping to release a final version in a few weeks which fixes some of the balance problems in the game and adds some of the features that I didn’t have time for, so I’d really appreciate any constructive feedback that you can offer!

Here’s a link to the game’s thread on TIGSource, which will probably get updated more often than this post. 🙂
